First make sure you really like programming. Are you good in logics? Can you spend time on one boring subroutine trying to fix it? Do you easily get bored (can't be, u have to write documentations).

If your answer to first 2 questions are YES and last one is NO (last one is not a must) then you can be a programmer.

JAVA is OOP and is considered easier than C or C++ (Java is a non native C++), but JAVA has so many derivatives and additives (libs) that the scope gets bigger and more complex at times.

Having said that, first practice some general programming. Then get some good Java books. It will be few years before you make big bucks.

  You better go at Youtube.com, and you will get bunch of basic classes on Java Programming. Or you can also get more than 60 hours Java Programming from Stanford University. This class will help you a lot to understand basic concept of OOP.

Hkrishna is absolutely right..don't look anywhere but start reading head first java..u will love the way every single chapter comes.. It is easy to memorize what u read coz the book makes reading fun...

@sna: lemme give u piece of advice. You should learn Java in an organized fashion, given that you're new to programming. There may be thousands of "tutorials" or videos or what not out there, and they give good info too but it'll make you more confused and you'll wind up hating programming and thinking that "its not your thing".

Take a book, read it. I highly recommend Head First Java - so much that I would parcel it free to you - if only I had the money or the enthusiasm right now :) . But you can take any book of your choice. Don't get tangled on tutorials and videos. Programming needs patience, you can start practicing it by holding a book in your hand.

And a confession, I haven't written any program in my life apart from simple QBASIC "whatever" few years back in school, does that matters????
