Hello Sajhafriends,
I am losing my job from the end of this month. I think, joining IT consultancy is the only one option remained for me to keep my H1B status. I have no idea about this field. I hope, sajha has lots of people who has knowledge on IT fields and Consultancy.

Which field will be a good chose in IT who has civil engineering background. And if you have knowledge about the consultancy who has good reputation on that field, please share the information too. I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Whaaaaaatttt? I thought civil engg. has better options than IT. I've seen civil engg. getting better jobs quicker than IT people. Anyway, I guess you can go with SQL(oracle/Sql server), these are easier  to learn and good money too. I'm at houston so I know one consulting company here, Objectwin, google it, you'll find it.

I have seen a civil engineer whose salary is in 100k + range after 5 years. If they have to move the company pays every part of their move with respect. They get generous bous and benefits and vacations.

In IT consultancy, now a days there is no respect. You have to be willing to lie and then be fired from your first job ( because you lied, and don't have that much knowledge as you claimed to get past the interview). By the next job after 5 months of seaching you may have become more knowledgeable in your field of choice in IT and may be able to stick around in that job for the contract period.

There is no vacation, nil beneits and bonus HAHA (good luck bro!). In case you have to move they give you 2 days notice to appeat at the clients office and will give you meagre moving money that does't cover anything. If you still want to leave civil and join IT - welcome to Hell!

lyrices civil engineer has deserving  future here in usa. it is uncomparable to the it field in terms of opportunity, respect and many other things. There is and will always be shortage of experienced  civil engineer. At the beginning we might be frustated with  this field. But stick on it for five years we will have bright future. Believe me. Don't leave this field at any cost otherwise you have to regret a lot later on.

Thanks for ur effort Anil and Biruwa,

As i mentioned earlier, i love civil engineering field. Here, the problem is to kep my status alive. I am having hard time to get a job in this period in civil engineering field. Thats why i am thinking to join IT consultancy to keep my status alive.

I am not interested to quit civil and join IT but the situation is pushing me in that direction.

So, please suggest if you have knowledege in IT field which one is easier to learn and get a job. I will definetely do not want to continue IT field for a long time. As soon as i get a job in Civil, i will move in my field.

Thanks in advance.

Lyrices,

Right now because of this economy, the engineering market is in a bit plateau stage, although positions of grad studies is increasing. Being ideal for a while or doing other jobs might not be a good impression for employers in future. There is a good way, grad studies positions are increasing atleast for Water Resources, and Environment wich i am related to; so if you are really concerned about your ststus....join grad studies, change of track for sometime and by the time you are done-----> knowledge upgraded, more salary, more options.

Good Luck
