The issue of red sandlewood (?) रक्तचन्दन is a matter of talk in every corner in Nepal. But, I don't know why this issue is getting so much attention these days.
If 5 trucks of sandlewood is caught in the course of smuggling, then there must be other 100s of trucks of sandlewood passing through, because those smugglers are nothing than profit seeking businessman, who dare to preach the legal boundaries for a little extra money. Hmm, 100s of trucks of sandlewood ? wow, that's too much, and certainly that much of sandlewood doesn't exist in Nepalese forest. So, they must have been brought from South west India where Virappan used to rule until few years back. The so called smuggled sandlewood travel swiftly through inter-state borders, checkpoints and custom offices, but are caught in between KTM and Barhabise. Hey, don't tell me this is because of YCL of the region. This is certainly a bottleneck that has some relation with the groups envolved in power struggle in Nepal. I fail to understand why YCL can't stop these bad woods before or immediately after crossing border line.
It seems YCL want to stop this business in the name of SMUGGLE. They were criticized for misusing their power. They (YCL) handed over the captured sandlewood to district forest office. But the staffs over the forest office helped to rob it back. The YCL submitted the captured sandlewood to police, but they were stolen from the premises of police office. The YCL attempted to burn them in Tundikhel, but the state sponsored fire-brigedd came to snatch half burnt sandlewood. Wow, what a great war between YCL and Sandlewood smugglers ?
I fail to understand why exporting the sandlewood is SMUGGLING at first? Why is it different from exporting carpet or Yarshagumba? If this business is not in our legal system, why not bring them into legal system and apply proper taxation polity and promote swift and profitable import/export of sandlewood? Doing this will certainly benefit country and businessmen, isn't it?
Also, I don't understand why chinese people are paying so high for this wood, where they actually are using them? If they are making huge profit out of these woods, say by extracting precious chemicals out of it, then why not we try to extract those precious chemicals in Nepal, and export finished product rather than smuggle raw material?
Ultimately, my deep surprise is that why politics is attached behind this? what is there so great that this matter is shaking political ground?
Please enlighten me.

someone somewhere is benefitting out of this, and by the way is yarsagumba is not in the legal system as well, i have heard in several instances, yarsagumba goes out to japan, but not in a legal way, and so does "kasturi ko bas,' a scent that celebrities here in the US will pay thousands of dollars for, just to even use it raw.
I remember as a kid some folks in my house discussing about the bones of a some animal and that would make 1 crore rupee, its not a rhino, but their horns make a whole lotta money, those people never got rich and the stories just fade away, no wonder what happens to these things from nepal.
and yeah making things legal is a good way, whoz gonna do all the paperwork though?

Wow Chana Bro Good Issue...
After going through it I also tried to see your point " How could it be smuggled through a long way through different states of India". I still remember that several time when I was travelling to Delhi to attend my school in my teenage, my small rucksack used to be checked in more than 4 places, and same used to happen with other travellers.
CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) I dont understand why YCL is so much interested in this matter though there are other stuffs that immediately concern the interest of Nepal and Nepalese.
So I think Raktachandan smuggling does not directly affect our country but the word smuggling is itself bad. Nepal has to seize the sandlewood and return to its source, as even government can not resale it in auction or any mean as per the treaty. We can not use it for any purpose neither chemical extraction nor any industrial or social purpose. So "THE ONLY LEGAL WAY OF SANDLEWOOD BUSINESS IS ITS SMUGGLING". Now you can guess the role of India in its smuggling. Otherwise Indian police can come to Nepal and beat Nepali citizens and also Nepal police can handle Indian wanted people illegally accross the border why it can not stop sandle wood business if it wants (but does India want??!!).
