KATHMANDU: One of the most gripping tales to have captured public imagination is the legend of Tutankhamen's curse, the superstition that the mummy of Egypt's boy-king took its revenge on the violators of its tomb, causing the death of the British excavators who discovered the grave in 1923.

A similar myth has now sprung up in Nepal. According to Nepal's tabloid press, a secret room in a temple in western Nepal wields similar power, and could be responsible for the massacre of Nepal's royal family in 2001 as well as the sudden death of a parliamentarian recently.

More than two centuries ago, the forefather of the present monarch Gyanendra, swooped down on Kathmandu valley from the tiny kingdom of Gorkha in western Nepal and began annexing the neighbouring principalities. The old palace still stands in Gorkha, protected by the temple of Gorkhakali, the goddess of war and power.

The Gorkhakali shrine has a "vayu kotha" — a secret room said to contain dangerous powers and kept locked. The late queen Aishwarya ordered the lock to be forced open and entered it in May 2001, the Jana Aastha tabloid reported.

A week later, Aishwarya, while attending a dinner party with family members, was gunned down along with Birendra, three of their children, and other relatives, reportedly by her eldest son crown prince Dipendra, who also perished in the infamous midnight massacre. The scared temple authorities boarded up the room once again.

Last month, a team of parliamentarians went to Gorkhakali as part of its mandate to visit Nepalese prisons and advise the government how to improve them. Team head Dilli Raj Sharma went to the temple, where the priest told him about the queen's visit.

An intrigued Sharma then reportedly asked him to have the door of the secret room forced open. By evening, Sharma, who had reportedly told his peers that he was in the best of health, died due to heart attack. "A coincidence connects the queen and the legislator," the Nepalese tabloid said.

I personally feel there is a lesson to be learned from this episode. It is okay to be curious but if you want to be daring at the cost of your life you pay for it. Even though we consider ourselves modern and not at all superstitious we have to be credulous and cautious and heed to the dangers and warnings of others regardless....

it's sad that you believe in all this crap, it's more sad that you're still mistified by Royals and their story wasting your precious time. The saddest, you get the news from India Times.

I heard this story some years back, not exactly the same but a lil different version. The priest of that secret room is a Pandey, who was mistreated by Birendra when he reminded the then King about a special puja and a request of Chhema puja. Only the pandey khalak priests were allowed to worship in that room, where a very powerful BAYUU has been locked up by TANTRA. The secret room required special puja at every 12 years. The priest reminded the King Birendra about it requesting needed arrangements for the puja, but the King just ordered an ordinary puja. He tried to explain about the importance of that puja, but the King just smiled upon him. He felt the King did not believe what he was explaining.

In a visit to their ancestor place the same year, the palace was on minor renovation, and the secret room was covered by curtains. The priest was not sure what dragged birendra into that spot, but he arrived near the room without any pre-plan. It was like a sudden arrival. Because the room is believed to be so dangerous for the Shah people, none of them were allowed to come that closer, to avoid any accidental entry into the room.

When people found suddenly Birendra coming into that place, everybody tried to stop him, but he did not listen to anyone, and entered straight into the room, did namaste to a covered god, and came back. None of his ancestors ever dared to enter in that room. The priest was sure, it will bring disaster. He thought a Chhema puja would probably compensate for this grand mistake. He even thought to have a special 12-year puja with Chhema puja but the king burst against him with mild anger. The priest felt humiliated and resigned from the job after that. Another young pandey was appointed in the job, who was not so familiar with all procedure, past mistakes and tantric rituals. The young one is still there as the priest.

The senior priest was predicting some sort of unrecoverable disaster or "Kulnash" since that incident with his inner friends and relatives. But most people thought the priest was simply mad because he lost his job. Nobody even believed he left the job himself. After 4 years of the incident, the royal massacre took place. The senior priest is still alive (soon approaching to his 90s). A grandson of the priest told me the entire story.

Its up to you to believe on such story or not. But there are people who are involved in these stories, and have witnessed all the happenings. So, I can't say the story is nonsense.
