Daylong curfew in Kathmandu, Lalitpur on Friday

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, Jan 19 - In a clear bid to foil the seven-party alliance's Friday's protest demonstration, the government authorities have imposed a day-long curfew in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts.
Issuing separate statements, the Chief District Officers of Kathmandu and Lalitpur said a curfew will be in place within the Ring Road areas of the two districts with effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.

All government employees have been asked to reach their offices before 8 a.m., according g to state-owned Nepal Television.

On Monday the authorities imposed curfew from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. then the curfew was extended by one hour on Tuesday (10 p.m. to 4 a.m.) and again by one hour on Wednesday (9 p.m. to 4 a.m.).

Curfew will remain effective from 9:00 p.m. till 4:00 a.m. today in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and some parts of Bhaktapur.

'Leaders arrested to prevent violence'

Home Minister Kamal Thapa Thursday claimed that the leaders of the political parties were arrested to prevent violence that could erupt while defying ban orders in the prohibited area.

Talking to journalists at a press meet at the Home Ministry, Thapa said The government was forced to take the recent steps to avoid the possible danger about the Maoist infiltration in the seven-party alliance's Friday's demonstration.

The minister, however, said that the present situation wouldn't last for a longtime.

Minister Thapa also said that the municipal polls scheduled to be held on Feb.8 would not be called off even if the government has to keep on increasing the restrictions and curfews.

He, however, said that the government was ready to show its flexibility on imposed restrictions if the political parties expressed their commitment not to enter restricted areas.

"How can the government watch mutely when the parties have publicly announced that they will defy the ban orders?," the minister questioned.

He did not make clear when the leaders would be released. "They will be released when the situation improves," he said.

In an attempt to thwart the Friday's protest demonstration by the seven-party alliance, security forces today arrested over 100 of opposition leaders and rights activists.
