currently working on OPT which is about to expire in a couple of months. I just applied for an EAD through TPS, but it sounds like it might take 4-6 months to get the EAD card. I have always had TPS but I had not applied for a card during the previous extension as I was using my OPT EAD. My most recent EAD through TPS is not listed as eligible for auto-renewal. Does this mean once my OPT expires, I cannot work until I get the EAD in hand, which is 4-6 months from now? Is there an alternative? What should I do? thank you.

That is correct in technicality, not sure which period is not eligible for auto renewal. Its better to not let go for your f1 status though. TPS comes with a few baggage.
