There is USPS service that posts it to Nepal. My friend has done it many times and each time it has reached the person in nepal. If custom rules have changed recently, then i am not sure.

usps takes longer time, ups about 4 days. i have used ups before they will take it to your home.

Did you send cellphones that time?

Fedex usually would call receiver and give options as to go custom and get your items released from there by paying custom or they can get it released and you pay them custom fee. I have found DHL better in term of speed and service. They release it from custom and provide you with the receipt to receiver which the receiver has to pay. The fee usually would be around 5-10k Nrs. depending on device. Watches not sure if they would even imply custom on it unless its Rolex, Omega ...
Another tip: Try finding some third party companies that does shipping to Nepal rather than using Fedex or DHL directly. They will charge way less as they ship in bulk and costs less to them. When i was back in texas, I used ShipForless and their cost was around $40-50 to ship a cell phone in compare to fedex or DHL charging over $100. I am sure there are such companies in New york as well.
Cost wise if you shipping directly, use USPS but not sure how good of service they provide. USPS priority mail would cost you less than $40 for small items.
