Designate Nepal for Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
A devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake rocked the entire country of Nepal in April 2015, and has now claimed more than 9,000 people, injured more than 17,000 and displaced hundreds of thousands. We commend the Obama Administration for contributing to urgent relief efforts in Nepal, however, another significant way the U.S. can help limit the strain on that country’s resources is by designating Nepal for TPS.
Join us in requesting Secretary Johnson, to designate TPS for Nepal and help aid the country towards the road to recovery.
A grant of TPS would allow Nepalis here in the U.S. to work and support their families in Nepal who were impacted by the earthquake. Remittances account for almost 30 percent of Nepal’s Gross Domestic Product. Now, more than ever, those funds are needed to help support the recovery process.
The Nepali community and its allies have come together, and have received Congressional support in both the House (led by Congressman Crowley and Congresswoman Meng) and in the Senate (led by Senators Schumer and Hirono). On May 12, the Government of Nepal officially requested for TPS status, and Secretary of State John Kerry has recommended the Department of Homeland Security to grant TPS to Nepal.
But our work is not over. Send a letter to Secretary Johnson, asking him to designate TPS for Nepal, and help empower those Nepali nationals here in the U.S. to stay and work, and help strengthen the relief and recovery work being done in their homeland.
