I am in the same boat, I have invested a significant portion of my life here thinking it would be a smooth sail sadly it is not the case. Nowadays Im struggling to find answers, constantly fighting between whether to go back or to stay in US in hopes for a better life. Kati F1 kati H1 kati asylum kati marriage ko chakkar ma lagne afai lai thaha chaina. Barsau agadi F1 ma aayera ahile samma dui jhola saman bahek kei chaina, what is it that's keeping me from going back to Nepal? question to myself everyday, is it the fact that i will not be able to let go of my lifestyle here? my independence? money? job? it's a mystery. hopefully someone will be able to convince me.

I have not tried for the Canadian Permanent Residency but i dont think i qualify as per their point eligibility requirement. I have heard that recently Canadian Govt has put a stricter guideline on PR application requirement, i am not sure what those are, would anyone be able to shed some light on that?

Bhai bahini haru (forgive my presumption, but from the conversation thread I could surmise that most, if not all, of you are of younger age that me), if I may, let me share my thoughts with you. If you find it helpful, great. If not, don't think twice of it. The best way I see for any foreign student to achieve Green Card and start the supposed "good life" (note the quotes) in America in relatively short time is through academics. Sure there are other ways. You can get married to an American. You can work at an Indian restaurant. You can go through often unpredictable and lengthy H1B then EB3/2 process. You can try your luck with DV lottery. But if you are new to this country and just starting out as a freshman or sophomore, studying hard is the most straight forward way to move up. Let me explain. It does not matter where you go for undergraduate, (obviously more selective your school is, the better - but even then, it's not the place, it's what you do at that place that matters). However, choosing your major is important. If you major in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) subjects - humanities, liberal arts subjects, while admirable, are not that helpful for our purpose. Your GPA in junior and senior year should be above 3.5. You should do well in GRE. You should also take and do well in Subject GRE. And you should get accepted in top tier research university for PhD. Once you attain Doctoral degree (normally takes 5 years, and most schools will allow you to go directly from Bachelors to PhD), you should have very little problem finding suitable, high paying job. But more than that, you will be able to apply for Green Card at EB1 category. No need to do labor certification. You will get your permanent residency within a year or so. This way, you have no worries over maintaining status or getting a good job or fulfilling your so called American Dream.

Riten bro is right.but one thing from my personal experence. yes, you need to take stem major but youneed to brown nose your professor or dept head too. i've seen lots of dhotis and Nepalis do that, just go to their office show your face or try to express your need. i couldn't do that cuz of my stupid ego, but everyone who did always got scholorships , TA ship, RA ship easily and moved up. it's all about brownnosing and crying to them , feed their ego sometimes, they love helping poor like us sometimes. but you need to study hard too, but again, if you're not getting good gpa, don't linger around school , too much competition , look for other things to suceed. i've seen people from dhoti restaurants making gcs and opening their own restaurants in few years while students graduated with great gpa working for them. this is America, it values exceptional talents , be it in studies , business or hard work. just don't focus on studies if you're not good at it, look other options too. cuz there is only so much effort you can put , other factors are luck and talents which are equally important if not more than your effort. i had to study like 4 times more than other talented people and still it took me no where :( i'm stupid in studies, but if i had started business long time ago, i would have definately suceeded cuz of my hard work and business background. lastly don't forget about brownnosing, just cuz you're in America don't think it don't exist, it exists more than anywhere else, they call it "networking" in better terms but guess what, same freaking thing.

Riten, how can you be so confident that its a piece of cake to find a job after finishing PhD. Remember most of the Chinese come to US for their doctoral program, so you have to complete with them

It;s not easy whichever path u take in life. There is something called "Effort" you need to put and something called "Luck". If you are lucky you get what you deserve with adequate amount of effort.

I'm not trying to disrespect anybody. I'm just emphasizing that the problem doesn't end with getting GC or Citizenship. Getting high paying job is the main thing to keep up with your family needs here and back home. Of course, you have to study and work hard for that. If you think, you are not that good academically, try to work hard and open your own business after saving some money and loans from the banks (no doubt lots of banks in US including giants like Bank of America has stopped approving loans for small businesses)..Its easy to write, but hard to accomplish..just my thought.. Even Citizens have problems, please check the following link if you don't believe me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY6NhzvgzAg&feature=related

when you accept the problem , then you start looking for alternatives , when you have alternatives you pick the best one and then your suffering will be over. but if you try to push yourself to get good gpa and you're not made for academic then you're in a wrong field. we all have our own fields where we are crocodile. find yuour ground and prosper

I am not a PHD material by any standard, i did try my best during my undergrad degree and got satisfying results but by no means am i close enough to apply for a PHD program. What are my options at this point? none of the legit companies i applied to wants to sponsor H1b, dont have enough resource to go back to F1, haven't found an American girl to get married to and don't have much idea about filing for Asylum, Indian restaurants won't take care of it.
