Kathmandu valley lies in a high risk earthquake zone. Instead of Haiti, it could have  been happening in kathmandu right now. If you are in USA text "Haiti" to 90999, a $10 charge will be added to your phone bill and the money will be donated to the Red Cross. $10 less is not gonna make us any poorer. When we spend $10 on beer or cigarette we don't really care then why should we think twice when it's time to donate same amount of money for when it could save someone's life. If this would have happened to us in Nepal then just think how much desperate would we be in need of help from outside. Now is the time, don't think twice....
If you are in any other parts of world plz find out how you can contribute. A little from us could mean a world for people in need in Haiti. Ignoring it right now is very very easy, but put yourself in their shoes. What happen in Haiti can happen in Nepal.

It will be disaster if quick of that magnitude ever hit kasthamandap. I think haiti got better infrastructure and access than kathmandu.

To civil/struct enggs and infrastructure planners in sajha,

Are the concrete structures that much vulnerable for the quake of magniture 7.0? Is kathmandu living with similar or worse risk?

How long will it take for supply routes to kathmandu to be restored in a disaster?

Are other major cities as vulnerable?

I am a Nepali student here in the US, and I don't earn a lot. But I felt that my heart would be the one made of rock if I didn't lend out a helping hand at the time of crisis in Haiti. So, regardless of how much debt I have in my credit cards, and how much I have to pay to school, I donated a small amount via the Red Cross. Tomorrow, I am planning to donate some warm clothes and shoes by googling some carrier who can take the merchandise to Haiti without charges.

Friends, brothers, and sisters, please... like the way Truthspeaker mentioned... making a small or whatever donation as per our capability is not going to make us poorer... it's not going to make us or break us. As an ordinary human, I urge anyone/everyone out there reading this note to join hands in this humanitarian effort, and let Haiti know that they are in our prayers and that we are with them during this time of crisis.

You can donate via the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/) , and through several other channels.

don't  give to redcross it will never reach there not even 90% of your contribution. If you don't believe google it. Give it to org like direct relief international to make it worth.

earthquake in Ktm it'l be even worst then haiti there will be chaos..more casualty.... since we are in hotspot for high magnitude earthquake zone. look at the geographical layout of kathmandu. + roads..  airport..so small if 4-5 large airplane land it'l b chocked..y this people in Nepal dont' think about it ..I have been following haiti disaster tv reports.. it is scary to see all that happenings.. imagine if it happens in kathmandu it'l b even worst.. .. its not easy for aerial aid or by sea.. we have one n only road to ktm.. if it get damaged n blocked we dont' have any alternative routes.. we dont' have heavy equipment ..nor we have UN  base with heavy armour in ktm ..it 'll b disaster.. i would imagine the total population of ktm (perm  temp ) would be 7-8 milions..what you guys think about this..??

someone have to do something about it.. we never think until it happens to ownself..n we always belive that it will happens to others but not us.. so.....

It is true... Kathmandu is ranked 1 in the most earthquake vulnerable cities of the world... it is estimated that if an earthquake of 6.0 hits kathmandu, 60,000 people are expected to die.. sad but true

Below is link on what to do during an earthquake.  ( This is from FEMA so not sure if it is for concrete homes, but if anyone else has anything more informative to add please do so)

This sight has some information about how to make your home more resistant. See link below.  Please take time to get knowledgeable engineers to look at your homes and suggest solutions for making your home earthquake resistant.

There is a prediction for M 6.5 earthquake in western Nepal and India by 2011. But I don't think it will be shaking only western part, huge seismic gap has already accumulated in central part also.

Everyone in Nepal knows..about disaster readiness.. do on your own..yi bhate neta lai ta afno seats ko  lagi jhgda gardai thikai chaa. I think the casualty will b lot higher then 60,000 look @ our infrastructure..we have only 3 fire brigade.. only one road to ktm. aprox 6,7 million ppl live in tiny ktm. no open space..no public awareness..no machinery to rescue..k chaa..M really worried about the whole situation.. hope it doesnt' happens.
