Hey Guys, I wanted to apply for a credit card keeping in mind the importance of the credit history. I haven't had any credit cards so far and so want to build my credit history. I was wondering if you guys could suggest some of the banks and ways to obtain credit cards for Nepalese. I want to obtain the card for the sole purpose of building my credit score and not the money behind it. So, cards with no annual fees would be preferable.. Thanks a lot in advance for your time to write your responses..

If it is your first time then, its best to apply a credit card from the bank you have your checking account... eg bank of america,suntrust,wellsfargo...

Apply secure card with bank of american. All u have to do is deposit the money for line of credit. The deposited money would be ur line of credit. You will get ur money back after one year.

oh thank you all for yr suggestions.. piranha...i have a debit account with wachovia for last 2 years but they dont offer credit cards to internationals..so have to look for some other banks As per the secured card suggestion, I looked the Bank of America website..but still I wasn't clear..,do you have to decide the credit limit in these secured cards? and does that mean i have to make sure after every month, my account has that much of money?( as it talked abt paying the monthly expenses) any more suggestions? esp for unsecured ones as well?

Regarding bank of america secured credit card, the credit limit is the amount you put as deposit. If you put 2000 for your secured card, you credit limit will be 2000. So you can decide your own credit limit and use your secure credit card within that limit. However, its better not to use more than 50% of your credit limit if you want to build your credit score.

go online......see offer like APR, annual fee etc..........and apply (do not apply more than 3-4 credit cards)..........for almost certain .........your application will be denied (it depends on how long you have been here in US)............at the same time...........always use your debit card for any transaction.........like buying grocery etc............and make history........after certain period they will send you credit card....................

I dont think u have to all the money u spent in that moth. I think u can pay minimum payment, However u would be subjected to interest on remaining balance of the money that u spend.

Looking at your situation .i think it would be best to go ahead and open a checking account in Bank of America and apply for the credit card at the same time..(its easy to get approved that way ,than apply credit cards online randomly)..if you are student much better..good luck with that...
PS: also when you open a checking account in BOA ..put a your frend with boa account as referal and you both will get Referal Fee...
Please visit BOA and talk to banker for more info...its easy..
GOOD LUCK

You don't have to do anything. Just go to a Bank of America branch and tell them that you would want to apply for a Credit Card. Actually I didn't even have to do anything when I first opened my bank account in Bank of America. They sent me a credit card with a credit limit of 1000 dollars.

bank of america would be the better option for the starter.. Student Credit Card will be the good one but the APR will be high as 19.99-23.99 something like that.. i started up with that.. but be careful on your credit cards and know how to use it for thousands of dollars credit limit in the future...

Credit Card 101.
never tell u r a student otherwise u'll get stuck with less credit limit for a long long time. u don't have to tell all the truth while u fill up the application. u have to show your rent minimium and income maxium , like monthly rent expence $250.00 and monthly income around $5000.00. they do not verify it.. Put certian bills like telephone or electric or gas bill under your name. They would like to verify your address though. Try chase card , they r very generous. Always apply one at a time. if somebody denied u, wait for 3 more months to apply again. Do not apply for same card with in 12 months. remember everytime they check your credit history, u'll be losing some points. Try to use credit cards as much as u can and always pay on time. Never apply one if u have too much credit loan , wait till u paid off. request credit limit increase in every 6 month but make sure u don't owe to them anything at that time, also never call in , fill up online application. other wise they will be asking u bunch of crap. Remember thet don't verify about your income or rental history for up to $20,000.00. Once u have $5000.00 or more limit card then only u can start apply for more and more cards.
Good Luck,

Good point about not revealing one being a student All the way. dd_sh - I had SSN when I opened my bank of America account but I don't really think it truly matters. I might be wrong. Also, whoever tried to make that brilliant suggestion of giving 2000 bucks as a collateral to get a Credit Card with a limit of 2000 dollars is talking utter rubbish. Can't believe someone would actually think about depositing that big of an amount for a year!! What world are you living in? By the way. There is only one thing you need to be careful about. Just make sure that there is no annual fees whatsoever. Don't worry about the APR. What you've gotta do is use the card on a regular basis for petty expenses for 3-4 months and after that not only your Credit Score will soar up, you can actually put in a request to increase your credit limit and lower the APR. Having said that spend wisely. I currently have a debt of around 7000 dollars myself. Again, spend wisely.
