I finally watched it!


A highly romanticized, melodrama bordering on obssesive love, compulsive obsession and sadomasochistic tendencies [ the scene of the thorn on Aiswarya's foot, which was NOT allowed to be removed just for the sheer sadomasochistic pleasure of pain and passion!!]. Male machismo and female arrogance artfully wrapped with servitude of a prostitude whose trade has been romaticized into an art form! "I love you therefore, I can hit you!!!!!!!!" YA Right! or is it "I love you but you make me hurt you!!!!!!!!"

How about the play of EGO...the ultimate downfall of mankind..."seikhi" And a self fulfilling prophecy of a man compelled to be doomed because he lost the one he loves! what happened to "I will survive"????? Yep definitely a mental conditioning of the Non Western population...bordering on love prevails all! A pathetic codependency that feeds off the past memories and a parasitic tendency of the lovers toward each other!

The vices of human nature at it's worst protrayed in the clamour of pomp and ceremony of Jamindar logs and dressed into a Romantic Tragedy of Laila Majnu where the modern time hero drinks and smokes his life into oblivion!! IN THE NAME OF LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OH! woe to the love that brings a man to his own destruction or is it woe to the man who brings destruction to love (out of his EGO!!!!!!)!!!

I had a suspicion that hindi movies, on average, were bad for one's health. Now, we have defnite proof. Watching Hindi movies cause a chemical imbalance in one's body.

First, one is barraged with the cacophony of endlesss songs, which surely must damage the ears. Its been 60 years and counting since an original tune was last heard. Then there is the incessant insult to your intelligence by the myriad plots and twists, which numb the mind.

The final nail in that coffin is the assault of riotous colours of an endless parade of garish costumes the characters seem to be constantly going through. They change clothes faster than a nymphomaniac changes lovers.

All of this results in the visual and audible senses in acute pain due sensory overload. This results in changes in blood chemistry, most notably, salt imbalance. Just ask Sitara devi... Dare call her a liar ? Hajooooooor.

To tell you the truth: I sat with glasses of water to moisturize my parched throat that constricted everytime Devdas rasped "Paru, paru, paaaaaru, p-a-a-a-a-a-r-r-r-ru...........p.....a....a.....r.....ooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Not to mention the nth number of times he ooperganthey chadaooed alcohol, straight from the bottle!!!!!!!!!!

I liked Paru who said....."Fine!!! you want to drown your sorrows in the name of family izzat, go ahead! You snooze you lose!!!....me , I ta go and get married to the highest bidder!!!" :P

So having drunk x number of glasses of water, I did feel a little diluted as the trace mineral of NaCl in my body seemed a tad bit low! I did start off like a noon khayeko kukhura....zzzzzzzzing until my better sense of annoyance at the romanticization of self-imposed doom took over!!!!

Hey don't get me wrong about the clothes...beautiful, elaborate and also nothing wrong about a nyphomaniac's need for change in partners! The mania, a disease and the diseased should not be blamed hoina? "love the sinner, not the sin"......hoina? Ye Montou ji where art thou???? :P

Devdas, Monsoon Wedding in Time top list

NEW YORK: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's blockbuster Devdas and Meera Nair's much-hailed comedy Monsoon Wedding are among the movies which won the top honours in the ranking for the current year by the Time magazine.

Devdas, described as the "all-singing, all-dancing, all-fired spectacle," ranks fourth in the grading done for international films and is ahead of Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, Laurent Cantet's Time Out (French), Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine (US), Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, (Japan), Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings (New Zealand) and Pillip Noyce's The Quiet American (Australia-Vietnam).

Monsoon Wedding is placed fifth among the movies produced in the West and is ahead of About a Boy, Italian for Beginners, The Pianist, 8 Mile and Safe Conduct.

It is only in the recent years that Indian movies have started attracting attention of mainstream media in the United States and several theatres now have sold out regular shows.

With high quality subtitles, they have started attracting international audiences.

Kaante, which ran to packed houses in the United States has won rave reviews in several newspapers and specialised journals including Variety. NRI filmmakers have been producing movies to which the audiences in Western countries can relate and the subtitles use language which is understood by them.

Time describes Monsoon Wedding as "smart, funny and ultimately poignant" comedy in which "a vast and fractious Indian family succeeds - after many hilarious difficulties - in marrying off a reluctant daughter." The film is still running on pay per view cable channels in the US.

Time noted that the plot of Devdas is based on 1917 novel and is good-old family-values propaganda - rich boy, ("all-world charmer" Shahrukh Khan), leaves home, abandons girl friend (former Miss World Aishwarya Rai), dallies with prostitute ("worldly-wise" Madhuri Dixit), suffers nobly.

"It is played with such commitment that the tritest plot twists seem worth believing - and singing about, in nine production numbers.

"Beyond that, Devdas is visual ravishment, with huge sets, fabulous frocks and beautiful people to fill them: It is a grandeur the old Hollywood moguls would have loved," it added.

Topping both the lists is Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her. It is a movie about two young women, each in a coma, and two men who love them.

In the international ranking, it is followed by Martin Scoresese's Gangs of New York, and Alexander Sorkurov's Russian Age.

For the movies produced in the West, Talk to Her is followed by About Schmidt, Far From Heaven, Road to Perdition and Monsoon Wedding.

For me cinema is the fantasyland where people do things one can seldom do in real life. I watch cinema for fun not to learn or to cry. I like to feel good after I watch a movie not to cry, so except for the songs, sets and costumes I didn't like much in Devadas. That's why I love watching movies like *Born in East L.A.*, *Hera Pheri*, and *Gool Maal* than * Pianist, *Schlinders List* and *Devadas*.

Haven't I seen real misery and sorrow in my real life that I would spend my time and money to see in the movies! I am not being mean to the great Sarat Chandra Chattopadhye (be peace with him) but I would rather buy 3 hours of laughter & fun than 3 hours of tears and misery.
