bb rani, there is a huge world outside america but then what? americans don't give a darn shiiit about that. my office colleague was in a rough mood today coz her country lost the match against czech republic today. she was like "we had at least 3-4 close shots which we could have converted to goals, but the ball rebounded off the darn bars couple of times." I told her," but czech is a very good team, they will at least make it to the quarters" she then goes, 'sorry, whom did u play against today?" I was like,"whattttttttttttt, you followed the match and don't know who we played against??" c'mon give me a break...czech are a very good team" She then said" whatever, it was a bad day for us." nevermind, we still have more money " this is america, and americans. hari saranam loote

Predominantly American accent. This Pakistani gal's jaw dropped when I told her I came here when I was 18. My brother's accent is even more American than mine, as he came here earlier. However, Americans tend to figure out I'm foreign born pretty quickly. Let's all remember that even Indians born and raised in the United States have an accent. Hispanics have a distinct accent as well, even those born and raised here. I don't know how much you guys have interacted with minorities born and raised here. I have quite a lot. Many minorities --not all-- born and raised in the United States tend to have a foreign accent. New Englanders, New Yorkers, Southerners, all have accents. Everybody has an accent. My coworker in the very beginning thought I must have come to the United States when I was young, at about 5 or 6. She could not believe it when I told her I came here when I just turned 18. Having said that, I still have trouble explaining some stuff. My coworker who came here when she was 9 tells me she has the same problem sometimes as well. However, with the type of job I do, I have to communicate a lot, as a result of which my spoken English has become really good. She sounded totally American at the very beginning I met her. Now I notice that she has an accent when she pronounces some words weirdly. Still predominantly American. All of my coworkers are Americans, so that helps a lot. One advice: avoid foreigners like the plague if you want to do something about your angreji. I have no Nepali friends anymore. I have lost contact with all of em. Not that I'm proud of it. It just happened that way. It just irks me to see Nepalis hanging out with other Nepalis. How about trying to fit in for a change?

When i got fired from my dishwashing job 10 years ago, my boss told me " u are fired". And i asked my boss where the fire was. I was ready to put the fire out with my dishwashing hose. But kids these days. they get here at 18 with a 10 years watching experience of" friends, simpson, hollywood blockbusters, MTV, vh1, espn, and in some cases CNN too. So these kids tend to have less or no accent at all. When i was a kid i watched amrish puri, kader khan, Mithun, amitav and all them folks...i still dont have any accent in hindi. I can speak kader khan without an accent. lol I dont really care about the accent on how its said but when a fellow gorkhey says " porlum" for problem. albarkarki for albuqerque, reeletip for relatives, and devlop for develop. It just drives me nuts. It is strange that we did have all the sounds available in our language but we were never taught to say words right. Like raswa and dirgas were there but we were never taught to say them right. That is why a gorkhay cannot diffrentiate betn "sid" and "seed". Most gorkheys dont know how to differentiate just the letter "s" and "sh". Some pronounce "see" and "she" the same way. If u notice even ppl with different accent will at least make the correct sound for the letters even if the rythm of saying the word is different.

It's funny to hear some Desi folks speaking English in a Hindi tongue. Mai I Hyaalp the nyaaxt parsoon in laiine? Nepalese are much better though. Some of us are quite close to 'em, just some. Must be too much of Hindi movies. Also, BB u can treasure your accent as long as u don't say tomyatto. When you don't pronounce the word correctly, u can't be clear. So, it's quite natural for a person to ask u to repeat over n over again. Poor communication. I'd rather suggest folks to imitate the native speakers. Listen closely: the stress on words, rising n falling tones. Faking might help as well n ur tongue will slowly adapt to it.

Just talk wot is appropriate for you, if you try and sound like them or who ever you are just fooling yourself. You weren't born in this country or where ever you are right now so be yourself. Some of us try hard to sound like them it really don't work, they can figure you out very easily....

sanjayas bra, it's not being urself or not being urself. It's more of learning to speak a language like a native, the correct n clear way. I didn't ask to hide ur identity. Let them figure out what they want. They will definitely appreciate your endeavor to learn their language. There'z nothing wrong with imitating a native speaker to the degree your capacity lets you.

brazzy - well said - if you can imitate more power to you, but while imitating some people sound - indianis` then some tend to make fun like the yanks always do. Nepalese are well imitators and do adjust to any language of the world very well.

Its not important to have a rhythm like a native speaker but its important to say the letters correctly.
