The Chinese have the tax treaty and so do the Indians. But the Nepalese lag behind on this important matter as well. Each year thousands of Nepalese are coming to USA on student visa and pay thousands of dollars. Even the richest in Nepal cannot dare to afford the whole expense throughout the study. Many work parttime and at least dare to raise the cost for the living expense.

The saddest misery behind this hard labor is that even on this small income, there is income tax...state, then federal, and so on...

How much does a student pay total income tax in average each year? Why we cannot have a tax treaty with USA like our neighbours do ? How can we reduce the amount of income tax? What things can we claim as deductibles?

With those students with family and kids, how much can they claim on dependents and how can they claim?

to answer your question about how much tax one pays.. it is based on the amount of check and how often check is issued (i.e. weekly, biweekly, semi monthly, monthly etc). it is not fixed as SS=6.4% and MED=1.25%
now if you are in CA you need to add more 1.21% for emp insurance sth.. similar.

by the way 7.65% is the combined rate of Social Security and Medicare.. contributed each by employee and employer...

another thing is you have to pay property tax too .. remember . that whether you are resident or non-resident... [ property tax for your vehicles ] (O:

Hey all the folks, who've been feeling sad about getting less benefits because of not having tax treaty between USA and Nepal, what do you think about writing an email or snail mail to minister for finance, or even sending an article to KPost or other newspapers? We can discuss for the draft of letter and article here. We already know that this can be solved if Nepal takes some initiative; so we've to let them know so that atleast future students here don't have to suffer like us.

Well tax treaty would be good. But there ain't any significance of such treaty to US with Nepal. If u look an India and China, they trade a lot. So why do u think US will bother considering Nepalese plea??

Well, the treaty doesn't have to be only between big countries. I know that the similar treaty exists between US and other small countries; so why not Nepal? Afterall, it's the nepali in US who're going to get benefits from it.

P.S. I worry more about Nepal not listening to our plea than US side.

Treaties are done to benefit both sides. Just think whether US will go into any treaties without any benefits for them.

But I agree its good to have a treaty that will benefit Nepalis.

I would also like to echo highfly's comment about the US will not want to have a treaty with Nepal, and its mainly because Nepal has nothing to contribute to this treaty. You can write letters and emails, there are plenty of trashcans (both in the real and the virtual world) to "file" those bickering.

when I wrote "you" I was not attacking you personally. I am also a part of that you and it also signifies my ineptness when I say we have been able to achieve nothing in last century and more. What I mean by humility is that we need to come in terms with our reality. If WE dont work for our better lifestyle, no one will. We don't want to live like a bum do we? Theres another way to this problem apart from the tax treaty. Why don't we make a conscious effort to make more money than the fellow friends from India or China?
What I mean by being humble, i.e is responding to that reality of ours in positive ways. It almost feels like we need someone else to do something for us. Thats a pretty sad way to live. Why can't we be the one doing things to others so that we are in control and not others? Why is it that we are so small in mentality and creativity that it often seems like we cant even fend for ourselves.

VB- you're right- self empowerment will solve many problems we're facing today. Not all. While we're at the process of gaining stability financially, government also has some roles to play to facilitate that process. Otherwise there's no need of government- government is to mobilize forces where those forces dont act out themselves- in a capitalist society, free trade determines the market. in a communist society, government regulates the market. we elect a group of people to represent our needs- that IS the government. even in the most capitalistic society, government does a lot of things to boost the welfare of the people. so we're not EXPECTING Nepal government to do certain things- it HAS to if majority of the people decide it is or it contributes directly to teh welfare of the people. THAT is what the government is for.

but only main thing i got concerned was last year when i was claiming for tax..even though i have a "good job" in a company and earn as much money as fellow indian who have the same job as mine...the things i came to know was they got good benifit from the tax......and i was the one who got like worst benifit instead paying for state....
.i felt like even though we are not the citizen why are we paying a hell lots of money??? i know that we need to pay tax i agree with it...,..but the concern for me was why those people from the tax treaty could get good benifit and we are the one to pay more for the same job........actually before this i used to give damn about it..and jsut careless about it...

I am disappointed to hear that Nepal does not have tax treaty with the US. One of my friend asked Prakash Chandra Lohani couple of months ago when he was in the US regarding this treaty and he replied him that this treaty has been signed. Did any of you check with Royal Nepalese Embassy at DC?

What if the MAJORITY determines that government HAS to give each one of us a house? Does your free trade hoopla cover that?

Maybe government is not a puppet that fufills what the public desires. May be government is an entity that works with the public for the public, with an eye that keeps a check on the fact that IT doesn't get screwed in the process.

So let me tell you that I am sure the government will even get each one of its pupil a house, as long as it can benefit from that business. Now my question to you, since we are bickering about tax, whats the benefit that Nepal or the US is going to get from you or your tax break?

Thats what I mean by humility. We, as citizens of Nepal, have nothing to offer.
India and China, however, exports the brightest technicians to the US as students and MAY BE to continue that, the US saw it as a beneficial thing to make their lives easier with tax breaks and benefits. There was a reason for the Indian as well as Chinese government to push for these changes; there was a give and a take. Indian and chinese government also benefitted as they got able technicians in their countries with knowledge of western technologies and trade.

Do we even come close to that? I dont think so. We still represent that class of people who are assumed to be waiters and waitresses if we say we work for Starbucks; the possibility of us being in one of the corporate position of that company is still yet to dawn upon majority of the people.

And don't get me wrong, may be theres a tax treaty thats been signed between Nepal and the US. I just dont think the means to that is a nobel one. I would rather pay a little more in taxes and take it upon our inability to raise our stature than pay a little less with another stamp on our back that says "you are poor so don't have to pay that much." The choice is a personal one. We are all fighting against this, in one form or the other. I just chose mine to be a little different.

Regarding corrupted political leaders, I didn't think that they will turn out to be like this. I do hate the corrupted leaders like khume, wagle n' all their company. But they can always be punished and brought to justice.

Regarding your comment on conscious efforts to make more money, what do you say about getting less amount of money for same 'position' compared to your colleagues? All the answer that I can get from the concerned authority is about not having treaty. We're not talking about escaping tax or any other thing. I'm amazed that we can't even come to agree even for our own benefits.

We definitely need our government to do it for us. Bodega, how am I gonna fix this problem by myself? Give me some advice bodega, how can I get the same amount of money as my colleague for the same hour of work for the same position?

You are dead wrong and I assume that you're arguing just for the sake of arguing. Where on the earth that you learn that having tax treaty will make you poor, and you've to get the stamp saying poor. My colleague's country's per capita income is tens of times more than us, and much higher standard of living, and quality of life than in our country. They don't need to get any stamp. The accountant knows which countries have got the treaty, and they're automatically exempted from some amount of tax cut.

Government is for the sake of people. Regarding Nepal's gains with this treaty, it's their duty to act for the welfare of their citizens no matter whether they get benefit or not. Why did government pay for 12 nepalese killed in Iraq? Why did some nepalese were recenty rescued from ARAB after media highlights? How did government get benefit by these acts? Why did government pay 12 lacs to victims killed in Iraq, and why only 1.5 lacs to those killed in Nagarkot? So my point is that they ought to act though they don't get any benefit. By the way, they'll definitely get benefit from it as #1 source for Nepal is remuneration, and those waived amount's some portion will go back to Nepal too. Similarly, we can always find the points to convince US gov. too though it might be tough.

Really sad, we can't have a mature- healthy discussing without personally attacking each other. This is why Nepal is so behind. Nepalies are not coming to a creative conclusion.
