Sounds crazy, does it not??? I got the same feeling when I was stopped and even more surprised when I was told the reason that I was cited for: "Driving on left lane" (of the frwy for passing slow vehicles on the right lane). For those who know DFW and perhaps Texas A&M Commerce I was driving on WB I30 (this hwy has two lanes on each side with a grass median and concrete separator that separate east and west bound traffic. I was stopped when I was traveling between 70 to 75 mph ( posted limit 75). I think the "for sale" sign on the back window of my car on the back passenger seat on an A4 paper might have caught his attention. I was pulled over and then the "white cop" informed me that I was stopped for driving on left lane. And come on let's face it everybody does to pass the slow cars on the right lane and there were numerous cars driving on right lane. Then I gave him my DL and insurance and he told me to "hang tight". About after 20 grueling minutes of wait I am called by his patrol car ( please be mindful I am on the right shoulder of the fwy now and I am called to walk behind my car and in front of his patrol car which is stopped in front of my car). He told me that I was cited for apparently slowing down and crossing the middle lane in order to pull my car to the shoulder safely. He said my slowing down of the car upon his patrol car's lights going off could have caused some accident and that's what I was cited for (obviously now he has changed his story and the reason which he furnished to pull over the first time is changed now and he ticket me for a different reason). Duh, Am i not supposed to slow down and safely pull over to the right shoulders when a car's lights go off.
Second, he cited me for not changing my DL to Texas. Be mindful here I am a IT contractor and it's not logical for me change the registration of my car and DL like 3-4 times a year when I have to travel from states to states all the time.
Final thoughts (when I talked to my friends): I am not white and that's why I got cited and second of all it's a small city (Cumby is the name of the city) and they want my money.
I did some research and found out I couldn't sue cop. Could I somehow sue the PD and city for discrimination or any other charges. This is so ridiculous.
Thanks in advance.

you can go to the court and try to fight the ticket. but dont approach the ticket with 'white' issue. What are the laws in texas for travelling in the left lane? Although you can argue iwth the judge that moving your car to stop was the most logical thing to do in your situation. Explain that you are a contracter to the judge, This should take the points off your record.

I think Most of the states require you to register your car and get the sate ID within 30 days of moving. They can tow your car and write you tickets for that. On the driving on the left issue, you are supposed to drive on right and pass on left. Though not inforced often, it's illegal to drive on left side for a while. I got warning in Maryland on a similar situation when I was driving on left and when the cop pulled me over, I slowed down amd changed lanes to get to the right lane. He gave me warning for suddenly slowing down in the left lane.

Thank you for sharing. Every time I got the citation or tickets, I always doubted their intention. This is useful information. If I get cited for a situation like this, now I know that one of my Nepali brethren has been through this. I will share a story from few years back. I was driving @60 inside a Tunnel in Boston towards Logan Intl Airport where the posted speed limit was 45. So a Cop with blaring lights and sirens followed me. I saw him and then continued driving because I thought (in my mind) that I'd stop after I passed the tunnel because somehow I thought the shoulder was to slim to stop. But the cop followed me for a while, came right in front of me because I hadn't stopped. He stopped abruptly like 5 yards in front of me diagonally, pulled his gun and came outside of his police car, pounding, and with gun pointing at me. He shouted at me like hell and asked me why hadn't I stopped even when I saw him. I nervously answered that since it was a tunnel and the shoulder was narrow, I was thinking of stopping after the tunnel. He later gave me speeding ticket. So after I reached home, I wrote a complain letter to BPD complaining about racial discrimination I had faced. I also sent them an email. I never received a response. I also went to court to defend my citation ticket. I got a reduced fee at the court. Nothing happened on my complaint letter, neither did I follow up. But today, when I reflect back; I don't know what to make of it. The police had indiscriminately screamed and cursed at me. But then I didn't stop. Maybe I am a sensitive person. Maybe I was lucky that day. I don't know.

You were wrongly targetted, but you are making your argument very weak by immediately pulling the Race card. Even if that happened, make a stronger case in front of the traffic court and fight it.

Apparently u didn't follow the rule and that's why you gotta face the consequences. Ever wonder why there are so many traffic signs throughout the highway? You will or are a pussy if you play that race card.. I got pullover this morning in Farmers Branch and cop told me that one of my brake light was out. I walked without a ticket or a warning. He just said " please get it fixed" I guess it depends on how you react to the situation. They are risking their lives to save ours..

Well you actually broke the rule. Left lane is always a passing lane. Unless you are passing another vehicle you are not supposed to be in left lane. That's not onIy illegal but dangerous too. I get mad at those people who are in left most lane and driving less than speed limit and all the other vehicle have to pass through right lane. By doing that you are actually putting other vehicles in dangerous spot. So please don't that. It doesn't matter whether you are IT contractor or FTE, you have to follow state law. Many state requires that you have to change DL within certain period. From your thread I couldn't see any white/brown race involved here. It's your fault.

Laalmon, I got two tickets right infront of my apartment, first for not complete stop at stop sign and second right turn without signal light. It was twelve AM dead midnight with no other cars running around. Police was hiding at dark corner to find drunk drivers, sadly I got caught on wrong time. I paid traffic lawyer to transfer my tickets from moving violation to non-moving. Here is link of case like yours that happened to fellow american. http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/Laurel-Maryland-Ticket-Driving-Too-Slow-197285901.html Either you go to court or just pay ticket and move on, not worth the time. Let's be cautious in future.

I have been driving in passing lane my whole life and never been cited for anything even one time when I was going at 72 on max 55 limit . I saw a cop was driving right behind me from nowhere , I swiftly changed to middle lane and slowed down to around 55. I thought I was going to get citation that day and started cursing myself when he changed the lane as well with flashing light on but luckily it was for a truck which was behind him and got passed him from exit lane. Generally what I have observed in MA its ok to drive upto 10mph higher than limit like if its 55 then you can drive upto 65-70 . that's for highway though. I drive in left lane most of the time within that range and if some guy comes close from back I let him pass and come back to passing lane again. So it depends upon ur timing and ur luck too. if I were you I would file a hearing against the ticket and explain whole thing in court but like others said wont use that racial word directly.

If its your first time, if u goto court and explain to judge or prosecutor they will sometimes dismiss it. You have to say sorry and blah blah.. I am speaking from personal experience... Next time you see cop on road, make sure you follow all traffic rules otherwise they will look for any excuse to pull you over. I dont think it matters that much if you are white, black, asian, latino... Cops have to give certain number of tickets every month to fill their quota. Just like any job...sales, marketting, IT.... cops job is measured by how many tickets they give.

And as Robwin says above, dont say racial discrimination.. Because u cannot even prove it. It will only piss the courts, judge off more.. Trust me...

An update: went to their office yesterday and the clerk told me that the ticket is $402 total. If I wish to "deferred disposition" (I think that's what she said) I will have to pay $552 an I will put in 90 days probation (meaning I shouldn't get any other moving violation in that 90 days). It's just ridiculous. She said I wouldn't be eligible for Defensive driving (since I have out of state DL). So I think I will have to get TX DL just to eligible for Defensive Driving. Anyhow I am given the court date of Nov 17 and it sounds like the case might be discussed because the clerk was also hinting at it ( I could see that she was not also too happy about the circumstances under which I was cited). Until then I have contacted a few of the traffic ticket lawyers. Let's see.
