I think I should not stay behind in appreciating the help I received from the Royal Nepalese Embassy at Washington D.C. in renewing my daughter's passport. I wrote a covering letter explaining her problem (why she needed to renew her passport immediately) although her passport was valid for another one month. I sent Overnight express mail from Alabama and included express mail envelop for passport return. They took my problem seriously and sent the passport within two days. I don't want to look back how their service was in the past, but I really appreciate the help I received now.

Application mailed - Nov. 15 (11:00 a.m.)
Application received - Nov. 16
Passport made - Nov. 17
Passport mailed - Nov. 18
Passport received - Nov. 19 (10:30 a.m.).

Just 95 hrs. including in the mail. It's really an efficient service. Thank you very much.

I had a similar experience - my new passport got here less than week after I mailed the original one. I think the credit goes to the staff of the embassy - keep up the good work! Very impressive.

And I didn't even have to call or anything. This even beats the US government - recently it took an America collegue of mine about 2 weeks to add pages to his passport.

Getting US passport also takes 2-3 weeks. If need urgently you have to pay extra $$.

The regular processing time for Nepali passport in Washington, D.C. is 2 weeks. It's clearly written in the instruction. Unless we have very urgent situation, 2 weeks is very reasonable time.

I had to wait 2 months and had to call 5 times when I renewed by wife's passort two years ago. When I renewed my passport last year, I made one call and the passport was ready in 4 weeks. This time, I didn't even call, I wrote a covering letter explainging the problem and sent the application with all required documents. They do care if you are really in problems.

In the past, there were comments about passport renewal service in DC in every Nepali forums, internet or social gathering. The staff have certainly taken the comments and feedback positively. Their action speaks for themselves. We must appreciate their work. I am very much impressed.

I better mailed my old passport off to DC and get new one !!! I heard that new passport is valid for ten years. IS it true ???????????

Jyapoo - I thought so too till this collegue of mine told me that because he had a couple of years left on his passport, the concerned authorities told him that what he needed was more pages and not a new passport! I found that rather amusing but I guess that's the way it works.

Yes, New passports are valid for 10 years.

If you have more than 6 months left in your passport expiration, you can't normally renew your passport. However, there could be circumstances when you must renew it. For example, your passport is damaged. Or, if you are getting a 3-year multiple entry visa (suppose you have a I-20 to come to US) and your passport is valid for 2 years then you can request with evidence for early renewal.

I wonder if folks from nepalese embassies around the world read this site. I think they shoud if not. It is good that Nepali Govt introduced 10-year passport. Besides the length of validity, what other diffirences (benefits) are there between 5-year and 10 year passport, gunaraj?

Jyapooji, the only difference between a 5-year and 10-year passport is the validity period (who cares about the design, anyway?). A dozen pages are added to give more space for frequent travelers. If you are talking about indirect benefits, it saves both the applicant and the government.

In monetary term, I had paid $60 for a 5-year passport and $80 for a 10-year passport, thus it saved me $40. Saving on additioal photos, postage, application etc. would be another $30. Isn't it a buy one save another? No need to look back at the passport validity date for full 10 years is awesome.

So is HMG losing some revenue? Not in fact, the demand for passport is very high and still growing. Sometimes, they run out of passport books. By reducing the work burden by half, they eliminate long lines for passports, their work is efficient and they are generating extra $20 per passport with virtually no additional cost. I

thanks gunraj for describing the diffirences. our govt also recently introduced 10 year visa to those folks of nepai origin, but naturalized into diffirent countries citizenships. has anyone applied for it and gotten approved? how has the experiences been? wondering....
