Nine Nepali women nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

The names of Nepali women candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005 have been made public.

According to a press release issued by the Sancharika Samuha, a Kathmandu based women communicators? forum, the names of the Nepali women for the prestigious award were made public amid a programme in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

The candidates are Sahana Pradhan, Rita Thapa, Indira Shrestha, Binda Pandey, Ghamak Ghimire, Anju Chetry, Stela Tamang, Jagan Sub Gurung and Ching Lahmu Sherpa.

Of them, most of them are from rural and grassroots levels and work on the promotion of non-violent responses to conflict situations and structural injustices. Pradhan, Thapa, Shrestha and Gurung are women rights activists while Pandey is a workers? rights activist.

Similarly, Ghimire is a physically disabled person and a regular columnist in vernacular Kantipur daily and Sherpa is a social worker. Chetry is a journalist and Tamang, a child rights advocate, according to the statement.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the first woman winning the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, 1,000 women worldwide, including 9 Nepalis, have been nominated for the prominent award.

The names of all candidates, globally, were made public amid press conferences in their respective countries Wednesday, reports said. The declaration has been made demanding recognition for their contribution to peace building.

During 2004, nominees were sought from across the globe with the help of 20 coordinators. Reports said that international project team, on October, had selected the 1000 women from over 2,000 from 153 countries.

A total of 147 women from the SAARC region have been nominated for the award, which includes 91 Indian, 19 Pakistani, 16 Bangladeshi, 12 Sri-Lankans and 9 Nepalis. nepalnews.com pd June 29 05

All the Nepalese women (nominated) must have contributed in Nepal, I wish there was a name added to that list. She is Anuradha Koirala founder of Maiti Nepal. For her I have respect, respect and more respect.

I really felt funny when they nominated so many people. why are they mocking such a prize.

looking back at past winners and the current nominated ones (i don't deny their contributions), can there be a comparision ? "What so great they have contributed to be able to be nominated for NOBLE PEACE PRIZE. I am sorry but this is totally a ridiculous procedure.

I am intrigued by the process even though it will be streamlined pretty quickly.

And yeah, Stela Tamang (who ever she is) will be boasting, "I am a nobel peace prize nominee".

I simply don't understand this...damn my IQ.

Congratulations to the nominees, but I do find this news a bit odd.

1) The deadline for filing nominations for this year (for announcement in Oct and the award ceremony in Dec) has long passed. It was Feb 1. Why make these announcements (collected in 2004) now when the process of nomination for NEXT year has not even started?

2) The Prize Committee itself says that: "The nominators are strongly requested not to publish their proposals."

3) It's NOT clear exactly who made these nominations. According to the Nobel Web site,

i didnt exactly understand whats your problem with this. also whats wrong with Stela tamang boasting that she is a nominee. She deserves it well in my opinion. also, sorry to question someone older than me, but i didnt get why Ashu dai found it so odd....it is well known fact that nepali women are getting the well deserved international limelight and are getting accolades from international community, if not national, for the work they have been doing..
stella tamang is just one little example.

i truly think there should be no objections in celebrating their success, even if they are just nominated. its a far cry from winning and people are already finding faults with them. god bless our skeptical nation and citizens.

What significant work have they (nepalese women) done to receive the Nobel Peace Prize? I dont think NPP is not that cheap.

When I think of Nobel Peace Prize, people like Mother Terasa comes to my mind, not Indira Shrestha !

If you knew Stella Tamang personally you know what kind of person she is and what she's done for Nepali community. She is a Mother Teresa personified for Nepal. Think of her like a modern MOther Teresa, I have that much respect for her. I think she thought it real through when she named her school. Ask anyone who attended her school, especially before she handed it over to her sister to run. It is one of the best in the whole country of Nepal, although little known, once again because she did not seek any publicity. Right now, she is running a mobile school for street kids it's called Ghumti school and thats just one of her littlepet projects, mind you. If you are that interested in knowing what she has done, I am sure you could contact her school directly and you would get all the information. By the way Bikalpa Gyan kendra, an alternative skills school for poor village girls is also located inside Bhrikuti.I suggest go take a tour.

Sounds like at least you know who she is. She has already represented Nepal and downtrodden Nepali community in United Nations and number of other bodies working for non-violence and women's development. You dont get to be in UN assembly so frequently without any credentials. I know at least dozen people who know her in every other country in the world. At least few of (them) I have personally been to and met. I could go on and on about her, but before accusing anyone of being non-deserving of anything, please do your research. Just opinions aren't enough. Make them facts.

So my hope for you, my dear, is that you can recoincile with the fact that yes Nepali women deserve this for whatever they have done.........it might not be as much as M. Teresa yet, but still it's a step ahead of others. Besides what's wrong in 9 nepali women getting nominated when every other south asian country has even larger number nominated? I wish them all the best and it will be a giant leap forward for Nepali women if one of them actually win. I have no personal favorites, even though one of them is my mentor because I don't have enough information to compare them side by side. Is that enough info for you? I am afraid that's all I can give you at this point. Thanks for your respect for me, Stella and women in general. We need them from Nepali men the most.
