This is height of ridiculousness. How could a Phd student and a medical doctor ( aren't educated people supposed to be more enlightened than the general mass and differentiate between culture and uncouthness) agree to have their elders wash their feet and drink that water??
Such a misogynist attitude coming from a man raised in partiarchal social structure.I am including only a man because of the presumption that the bride's party had no choice in this matter.
EEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHEEEEEUUUUUUUUU.

I am really disgusted with Sandesh Adhikari "Bhaute". He is the star of Civil Engineering 2054 batch but he could not really discard this tradition of humiliating the elders. If somebody as educated as him still participates in such a disgusting tradition with smiling face, what do you expect from regular people? I am disappointed in you Sandesh Adhikari "Bhaute".

To, all of you guys
first of all,,,his name is Sandesh raj Acharya,,,not adhikari. I assume that you already know him since you talked about him being the star of civil engineering in pulchowk campus, and then he went to IIT with scholarship for his masters and finally he is given another scholarship for his phd degree in canada. all i am saying here is, he has some brain and he clearly knows what is good for him and his society.
now here comes the point.....you guys must be living in USA or some other developed countries...you guys must be well informed that how people from these countries stick to their religion...how do they celebrate all their holidays....they do not hasitate to do what their culture says. They do all those rituals with pride. now look at you guys, not ready, even opposing our own rituals..damn you holy shits. "ardha buddi, dhedaa ko kaal" or "nahune muji ko ganaune mukh" this is all i can say about you people. if you dont like to follow our rituals, then dont...but you dont have rights to oppose a nepali culture if you say you are a nepali.
I am proud of Sandesh that being a hightly educated person and even after being known to international cultures,,,he is still sticking to his own cultures....kudos to you Sandesh....you did the great job, only people like you can preserve our culture and our country nepal itself.
finally one more thing, if you guys think he is a "bhaute" then please suggest us a suitable name to call you all....

I think there is a saying that Wisdom and knowledge are two different things. Just because you are knowledgable does not make you wise and vice versa. Look at the couple, so knowledgable but what is the use of people like them in our society.
I rather go with the couple who recently forgo the traditional wedding and all the expenses to donate their money to social cause. I heard it was a big news in Kathamandu.
there is another moron giving excuses for his practices.

I think Sandesh himself does not like someones drinking water flowing from his feet in such a ceremony, and it's obviously one of the bad practices we have been following for the sake of culture. What you see people following in the western culture are mostly good practices; they are far ahead of us in correcting bad practices (eg, we still have feudal structure and one or other form of slavery in our country, but they corrected themselves long ago). So, they follow their cultures that treat people better than we do in our cultures; but we also should strictly follow all the cultures whether good or bad just because westerners also follow all their cultures is lame excuse or justification.
Just based on what you observed, criticizing Sandesh for not skiping such bad tradition is also not fair i guess. Sandesh might have opposed the idea of going through this practice as a marriage ritual to so-called purohit about and purohit might have rejected it. or he might have talked to his family to skip this practice; and his family might have asked him to shut up saying like, "goda ko pani nakhai pani biha hunchha? bidhi puraunu pardaina?" or he might have talk to bride's side to skip this; but brides mom, grand mo, dad, etc might have reasoned somthing like, "natini ko or chhori ko goda ko paani pani khana naupaune hamile? teso garda ta agati ma parchhau hai hami?" who knows?
It's difficult to revolt in our soceity especially against some bad tradition. So, Sandesh might have reluctantly accepted the tradition even when he might not like it, who knows? Goda ko pani matrai hoina, goda ma dhogne chalan pani naramro ho ni, tara ke garnu? bhanera matra nuhune.

I know Sandesh is an exceptionally talented guy but educated people like him should now have the guts to challenge the hygienically risky, medically unhealthy, contemporarily disgusting, useless, dominating, sexist and primitive practises like letting the bride's relative drink water washed on their feet. If these so called highly educated individual continue to do what their uneducated forefathers did out of ignorance, what is the point of being educated? Useless practises like this cannot be deemed as part of a culture. Western people left behind all those shitty practises and therefore they have gone a lot farther. Compare your daily life in the US to what average rural Nepali people do in their villages, than you will realize we Nepalis are still living almost like the cavemen. Why? Because of these shitty practises that we cling on to in the name of culture.
One whole generation should be prepared to relinquish such primitive practises and I think its about time our generation does it straightway.

Thank you Krish for correcting my mistake that he is an "Acharya" not an "Adhikari". Moreover you mentioned not to call him "Bhaute". But as far as I know that is his pen name in Sajha and he has written very nice poem(if I may) called "Pheri Pulchowk ko Yaad Aayo" with that pen name. So, it is not us who gave that name to him but he chose it himself. Also, he has really made us proud by going to IIT for his masters and Canada for his Phd. But please be brave enough to say what is wrong is wrong. All that education has come to a naught. By following our culture and tradition if we humiliate other human beings, we would be better off shedding them. Time should define the culture. There used to be a practice called "Sati" whereby a widow has to immolate herself on the pyre of a "beloved" husband. If Chandra Samsher had listened to people like you in terms of maintaining the culture then we would still be seeing widows burning themselves in Pashupatinath today. Also, the untouchability used to be so severe few generations back, it is getting better due to reforms by educated people. Although there is still a lot of room for improvements, if people have stuck with the practice as it was just to maintain "culture", 20% of the population will still be slaves to the landlords and people of higher castes.
Also, the two nepali sentences in quotes you had are really disgusting. Please try to clean your language.
Ctal, I think your assumption that Sandesh does not like it himself seems to be wrong. Please look at the picture LondonBridge has posted, don't you notice a smirk on Sandesh's face when that elderly frail looking woman is drinking water from his feet?
In any case, educated and intelligent people like Sandesh should show us the way in reforming the society so that the lesser humans like us can also follow their footsteps.
