I am never up for Nepali movie. The reason, it is annoying to watch very unprofessional acting nevertheless I do appreciate  Kollywood’s effort to keep moving on regardless of what critique like me say. My conclusion above is drawn from few movies that I have seen those which are enough to represent sample size.  But, Kagbeni , thrashed my conclusion into trash! Of course there were few loose ends such as, in the beginning of the movie, the transition of various scenes would have been smoothening out, but you know what, at the end,  movies was awesome and let me talk about the message of the movie.  Is it an outlier or is the changing trend of Nepali movie.. I am wishing it for latter.

This movie brings about our very culture and explains it all so perfect that people who have lived outside Kathmandu or at least travel across the cultures would easily reminiscence it. It also sheds light on our hopes and portrays a nice picture of current turmoil in Nepal.

 
One that struck me:

 When Baba (Sadhu) speaks in Hindi (a word) and converses in a very  different Nepali accentà It represent how diverse we are in culture but yet we are so willing to help each other regardless from what our identity is, our soul and heart is filled with kindness and love.

Ask any Foreigners why they like Nepal so much, one common message goes like this, “I like Nepal so much because the people are so nice and very helpful”. It does not matter how many times they get harassed or deceived by street vendors, outsiders, who has been to rural area or at lease out side of Kathmandu valley always have a common conclusion, as quoted above.

 

My point here is:

We are so good in our own unique ways for which we will always be appreciated upon. But the current uprising to break apart our very nation into mayhem that is leaning for a civil war among ethnic groups is scary since it is changing our values and norms. It is only making us worse off at the time when demand is to be the best. Those who are involved are nuisance. Our system, Yes! The government has never taken the responsibility of being incapable to handle the problem and of being shameless. No matter who comes next it will be all the same as they all look alike-hungry for power, money and shameless fame!

In sum, slowly but surely we are experiencing a change in our own culture of love peace and happiness into fear, insecure, war, distrust, disharmony. The net result- millions of Nepali are out abroad, is it better off that way though? Ask Nepali living abroad if they are happy, regardless of whatever the answer is one of the few answers would be Nepal gayera ke Garrne or Will I be able to live safe? Or even worst is will I be able to feed me and my family where there are so many public holidays, short government office hours and on top of that Bandh and even worse now is part of Nepal does not even function because we don’t have infrastructure tofunction( Durgam Chettra), the other which should function is crippled by bands from Madeshis, Limbu  and the like, the other part functions but can't function because some other parts does not function (Kathmandu). So it is not even the question of whether  one is happy or is  it better off its our necessity or forced per se to be abroad  hoping for the best.

 
In my school history text book I studied Prithivi Narayan Saha fought so hard to unite our country some hundred years ago,Wow! , leaders are fighting now so hard to break it apart . This is great we are so damn good in moving back in time something we can see only in movie in the west (Austin powers) while the demand is to leap forward. Had someone wished for this to happen for Nepal? And are we all suffering the very wish! Or Should we or can we wish for something else now?

jokes apart, i think it's good to be conscious of what's going in your country and feel sorry or compassionate about it, but what we, as responsible citizens, are clearly lacking, is 'action'. i was there in this nepali gathering the other day and all we were doing was talking, talking and more talking. of course i had my share of thoughts as well and i didn't hesitate a bit in chiming in but at the end of it all, it all sounds so shallow to me these days you know. i mean, what the heck is gonna happen by keeping the damn place in our thoughts and prayers. we've been doing it ever since we came out of it.

i know i myself am sounding like a hypocrite venting my frustration out here after which i will get back to my work, but someone has to start taking thoughtful actions. we have done enough of brainstorming now let's translate our thoughts into actions, shall we?

here you go riten, my own recipe :P

1) first marinate tilapias with oil, salt, pepper, turmeric, tamarind, spice (cumin and coriander, you can also use garam masala or tandoori masala from indian store) ginger-garlic paste --all according to your taste and leave it for about an hour.
2) make a paste of gram flour (besan), salt, pepper, turmeric, sesame seeds, yoghurt, ginger-garlic paste. Dip the marinated tilapias in the paste and oil fry them until they are brown.

 I guess my question is, what ‘action’ means? Is it what you are referring , that we all should go to Nepal and start protesting it on the street? Or are you indicating we can still be here, abroad, and be willing to help.

 

I am sure there are good fellow citizens who have initiated the process through organization like Help Nepal, NCEF, Sebis, and the list goes on…. Yes I have heard/seen and taken part in transformation of the brainstormed ideas turned into actions.  

To answer your question, “ who wants to volunteer first?” I guess the first place has already been taken, even if I did start I will be the second or later. I was just wondering rather than pointing out or questioning, which is by far the easiest thing to do, one could have just said… I will do this.. or I have done this and are you willing to contribute. I guess that is the fair question instead.

Anyhow...

Coming to the topic, I appreciate your serious concerns on the ongoing turmoil in the country. Being a fellow Nepali, I can understand the feeling that you and numerous other Nepalis living in Nepal and elsewhere share. My heart bleeds for Nepal. It's been bleeding for long and now I don't even feel much pain so to speak--not coz it's being assuaged but we're getting habituated with the pain I guess. Good thing is, I still see the silver ring around the dark cloud and I think we are moving forward, albeit at snail's pace, and I am just hoping we face towards the right direction first coz all we have to do after facing towards the right direction is keep on moving and we'll get there. I honestly think we will get there one day. The biggest question is "When?" but that's another story our grandkids may share with their grandkids. hahaha..

I understand our plight and the reasons that ensued one after the other for most of us Nepalese, which made our stay in Nepal close to impossible or impractical to say the least--not that they were impregnable by any means. I am not against brainstorming as long as the ideas which sprout and blossom from it are translated to actions but I am just a kind of ticked off by the blaming game we love to play. It's not just one individual, almost everyone of us, as per my experience, in one way or the other, likes to pinpoint failures in the part of others (be it leaders or other authoritative figures) while when it comes to giving a second thought on whether we, as responsible citizens, lived by the expectation the country has for us, we fail at it miserably. That to me is a subtle hypocrisy we are ourselves oblivious of.

I firmly believe that in democracy--governing and keeping eye on governance so that it does not derail or mislead people are both equally important/integral  chain of events. And we, as people, have direct/indirect effect on both form of events. We elect leaders of our choice so we make our own governance, first effect. Secondly, we also have to make sure that the governance does perform according to its objectives and any discrepancies on their part are not tolerated. This is where parties in opposition and the civil society which comprise people like us have their hands in. Unfortunately, we shy away from it and fly some distance for our own motives. We tend to forget that it's 'US' and not YOU or I that develops a country. That's that.

Anyways, I think we have, among us, many wiling ones who have contributed or are still contributing and some who want to contribute to Nepal in the future. 'How' and "where from" are important but they are of secondary or tertiary priorities-- long as you have the will, you have the way. Actions speak louder than words no wonder and I hope we act rather than making Nepal an issue of some "somras" talk for mere entertainment.
