Dear Friends,

Please give your insight on following:

How is it working with an IT consultancy run by Indians? I would want to know how is the nature of work after the training period. The one that I am encountering says they will place me with their client after completion of training. If someone has experience of working with similar type of IT company, I would be glad to know from them.

I completed my master's in non-technical field and it seems that I will be working as business analyst. However, I wonder what kind of placement do these type of IT consultancy can have for business analyst type of position. They are rushing me because of H-1B limit, but I want to be sure of knowing more on this before coming to any decision.

I will humbly welcome any comments/opinion in this regard.

Best,

What training are you talking about ? I have worked for two Indian companies but never had training. Just worked directly. It was in IT.

Consider Indian companies as only junction. Once you get H1 and few months of work, just look for other American companies.

Thank you.

They call it internship which will basically train individual with the background needed in IT.

One thing that is gathering my attention is their contract term which says I will have to work for 12 months and can not work for their client for two years after termination. I also wonder about working after the internship which, as per them, they will market me and find the client willing to hire me. If any one has similar kind of experience, I would request to please post the information.

Best,

One of my friend went to NJ in hope for a job AND H1B but after 5 months of unemployment, he gave up. The first month, he thought it was a sweet deal as he had to pay nothing for Room & Board and was getting trained at the same time. Yes, everything was FREE (ofcourse alcohol excluded)!!! His roommates were all Indians, some shipped to the U.S. with H1B and with 5-10 yrs of expererience. They talked, ate and slept in Java, so I heard.

Anyways, just be careful coz' you don't want to be hanging there for a while before they (you) find a job. They do train you and market you but at the end, it's you who goes to the interview and gets the job. He gave up because it was taking too long and they gave more preference to the H1B FOB's with 5-10 yrs.experience.

As DD said, this should be your last option. Since you've got your Master's, I think you should look around yourself first(which I'm sure you're). B.A's make good money and I'm sure you can find a great job/employer.

Goodluck with your pursuit.

Bela Bakhat,

Since you are a Master's graduate, it shouldn't be a problem of H1 if you join any companies. The question is what kind of companies will you be joining. I have been in this area for almost 8 months now and to say frankly, in training you will learn nothing. And moreover, if you are leaning towards Business Analyst, they will give you minimal training as there is minimal courses to be taught and the responsibilities for BAs depend upon the nature of the company. Consulting company is just the starting point to be on H1. After completing training, getting job is totally depends on your personal confidence and skills. If you sound confidence enough that you really know what you have written in the resume ( which you should do by yourself), then you should be fine. For me, it took me almost 5 and half months to get my first job including training (10 weeks for training). But, some people got job within 4 months or right after the training. So, it totally depends upon you and there should be a lil' bit of luck too.

What I recommend is try researching on some American companies first. But, at the same time, keep the wide option towards indian consulting company. Yes, these consulting companies have their own stupid policies. In my consulting company, I have to be with them for 15 months, but I have seen people leaving within 4, 5 months. Technically, you can leave whenever you want to. In US, there is a law that no employee can be bound with them. And if they threaten to refuse to give your H1, f##k them off, and get the other company. Legally, they can't do anything. But you have to be careful.

Hope this helps! IF you have questions, let me know!!

Lot of people talk about indian consultants. They modify your resume to make it look appealing so that you get interview easily. What's the trick here? Could you guys share those tricks with some specific examples so that people like me who is looking for jobs or will be looking for it in future will be benifitted ? They give training for few weeks. What kind of training do they give? Is this training same for everybody or specific to your field? I want to make my resume better myself by learnig the tricks from the experienced one. Please help !

Delicate Jee,

Thank you very much for your opinion. Your experience seems to match with the kind of experience that I may get into. As I read their contract terms, I feel like why the hell do they need so much of explaining to protect their butt. Main concern for me is the placement after the training. I have heard from some that they will manage to get H-1B but then for job it is another hard work. So, is it that the job searching again continues on our part? But, as per the HR manager, the company will market me and arrange the clients(project work). Everything looks so flashy that I m being conscious. Any comment/opinion!!!

One another intricating aspect is to look out the reason for these companies to do all that for its so called "trainee/employee". As per the contract term, one would be penalized for breaching the terms, but does not specifically mention any fee/charge except the contract period binding of working for them for certain months.

Best,

Bela Bakhat,

Yes, it's all depend upon you and by the way, little bit of luck too. Ofcourse, your HR manager is behind you unless you get your job. They don't care whether you like it or not. Their main goal is to place no matter what kind of company it is, whereever it is and how long it is unless they get good amount of money in their pockets. But hey, here is the reason why they they are so taking so much of advantage from freshers like us. They clearly know that we are desperate in getting job after our graduation, they know our financial condition. So, if they say that they can give us $50k per annum, we think it's a really good deal and plus free training and accomodation and even free fooding (in some consuting). We don't know actual payrate from the working companies. I heard that they almost get more than half of the actual billing rate. This is because we're showing our experience to be as 5 years. This is the main secret right here. Because of this 5 years, this people are printing money like a paper in their accounts.

As per your contract paper, if it doesn't mention any kiind of fee/charge, then they are clearly bluffing. Why don't you look from your point of view, if they want to charge, then how much they charge on you if you leave them. They haven't mentioned anything. Even in my company, they have mentioned that at least $20k would be charged in case we leave before 15 months, still people are leaving. They can't do anything. Instead they try to keep back on your feet. As "explorer" mentioned several big companies, why don't you try some of those? I have heard that they are much more better than these small consulting companies. You can also go to www.sulekha.com for more info on consulting companies. Some of them have good bililng rate. But, be careful, there is always some hidden fees. Try to clarify all those fees in advance before you join.

Qubit,

The trick here is simple. Modifying your resume according to the requirements they are looking for. Highlight those words that they mentioned in the requirements. I have even heard that the hiring committee even search those resumes according to the keywords they put in and filter out. As per training, they train on some of the testing tools that we might use if we get job. Some of them are WinRunner, LoadRunner, QuickTestPro, SilkTest and Rational Suite Enterprise. It's like learning MS Office at the beginning of your basic computer course. If you learn it seriously, it's not a big deal. And they also give some ideas on how the testing process is done. For more info, you can check following websites:

Hope this helps!

Dear Delicate Jee,

Thank you very much for your expert comment.

The more you explain, the more it matches with my case. The breach of contract would in my case penalize me to the extent of $25K, very close to yours. I had this sense of some hidden agendas for these companies to make it look like good deal for us but in reality making even better deal for them. Well, you had a good hold on the issue and you got the point real right.

One thing that is pushing me inside to go for it is because of the situation with H-1B right now. The regular quota has already exhausted and I will be placed under the advanced quota category of 20000. This category, as per information of some sajha friends, is already down to 11000. If I fail to capitalize this year's H-1B and given my OPT period, I will be out of status for 4 months next year before I can apply for H-1B given that I am hired by then.

How would you consider this chance of getting things going for now and looking for any other better alternative whenever and wherever it might come? I am going to check all the websites and other sites that friends have recommended.

Would you mind telling me how things went with you regarding job after training? This is a request if only u r comfortable to share with.

Once again, humble appreciation for sharing your ideas and experience.

Best,
