Though its too tumultous a time due to the political turmoil in our country, to divert our thoughts to changing this and that, I would like to sneak my idea of changing the capital city of Nepal. Kathmandu is definitely a fertile and wide enough valley to accomodate bulk of the population, government buildings and foreign diplomatic missions. But the problem is that Kathmandu is a highly unplanned city and is perched among the rugged hills, which makes transportation a nuisance. Also, there is an immense influx of people inside the capital, which deteriorates the condition further. So, do you have any ideas where to relocate our capital in a strategic place so that the above mentioned problems are overcome? We need to build a planned new capital like Islamabad in Pakistan and Abuja in Nigeria and so on. I think some place in Terai would be ideal for the capital because of the plain topography and ease of transportation. What specific place do you suggest for making Nepali capital and why?

My suggestion would be to keep Kathmandu as capital of Nepal; but move/relocate all the factories and industries to the south of Nepal. Thus, teria could be the industrial zone of Nepal. In a similar way, only eco-friendly industries should be run inside the valley. The main industry inside kathmandu should be tourism. We should built more safer highways, or may be more airports.

intresting topic.. i would think that organising ourselves like indians do wouldnt be a bad idea..say , ktm would be the administrative capital...ilam, the intellectual capital ( like calcutta is in india)..pokhara or namchhe bazaar would be the touristic caplital etc..this would decentralise the country and would not allow the elites to remain in the same place..it would also allow us to profit out of climatic and cultural diversity of nepal or otherwise, outsource things from the valley to its entourage..Say all the bureacratic organisation would be placed in panauti, all instituitions regarding history, heritage and patrimony (if mobile) would go to bhaktapur, patan would be the 'only business' area in the valley etc ..hmm

If we were to move the capital out of Kathmandu, my preferences would be either Bharatpur/Narayangadh or Surkhet. I haven't been to the latter but have heard good things about it (like city planning etc).
