Nepal's prince unleashes fists of fury
RAJEEV DESHPANDE & INDRANI BAGCHI

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, OCTOBER 07, 2004 04:21:17 AM ]

NEW DELHI: Nepal's crown prince Paras just can't seem to keep out of trouble. While his father, King Gyanendra, engages in delicate peace manoeuvres with Maoists and political parties, Paras sent Kathmandu into a tizzy by beating the son of a leading Nepalese businessman Prabhakar Rana, who also happens to be a personal friend of the King.

The shocking incident happened at Hotel Everest's Galaxy discotheque where the prince was hanging out with some friends over the weekend. Paras, infamous for using his fists at the least provocation, first got into a fight with Mahendra Lahoti, son of a Rashtriya Prajatantra Party politician.

This in itself was not surprising Paras and Lahoti have brawled earlier at the same venue in July. But when young Sidharth Rana, who is chairman of the Soaltee Group owned by his father Prabhakar, sought to cool things down, it had the opposite effect. An enraged Paras turned on Sidharth.

Quite unmindful of the close ties the Ranas have with the palace, Paras set upon Sidharth and was soon "assisted" by his friends who could be fairly described as "aides-de-combat". As a result of the fracas, Rana junior has been hospitalised with a broken kneecap and other injuries to his legs.

Kathmandu is stunned and though a sense of resentment is evident, only hushed whispers are to be heard. This is not the first time that the crown prince has been quick on the draw.

What sort of conversation do you think took place between Prabhakar Shumshere and King G after this incident? Prabhakar Rana being King's relative, confidante and business partner as well as father of Siddaratha Rana.

Prabhakar's daughter, Maya, is incidentally married to a lawyer and wall-street investment banker Peter Tufo, the ubiquitous recent U.S. ambassador to Hungary.

Thanks for PETER TUFO's info. So Pravakar Shum's wife is British?

The Marrying Man

Peter Tufo, Bill Clinton's ambassador to Hungary, has been trekking in Nepal for 25 years, and now he's brought home quite a souvenir his fourth wife.

And though the sixtysomething Tufo didn't exactly pluck his thirty-something fiance out of her cradle, he obviously peeked: She was a child when they first met.

Maya Rana is the daughter of Tufo pal Prabhakar Shumsher J.B. Rana, a Nepalese industrialist and an economic adviser to (and business partner of) King Gyanendra. The king took over in Katmandu after his brother, the former monarch, and eight members of the royal family were massacred last June by the crown prince, who then killed himself. A friend of Tufo's says that his fiance had to identify the bodies.

The very rich Ranas are one of the two most powerful clans in Nepal, where there is a rigid class-and-caste system. After his years as a man-about-New York-and-Southampton, Tufo, a lawyer and investment banker, should know his way around pecking orders.

Tufo also knows from powerful clans. Wife No. 1, now Alexandra Gardiner Creel Goelet, is the co-owner of Gardiner's Island between Long Island's two forks, which Charles I gave to her family in 1639. Wife No. 2, Francesca Stanfill, is a daughter of a former chairman of 20th Century Fox. And wife No. 3, Kimberly Paige, who left Tufo last November, is the step-daughter of real estate operator David M. Baldwin, a former partner of Harry Helmsley.

I think Prabhakar Rana's wife was Anglo-Indian. She died a few years ago. There was a rumour that she commited suicide, however, was given a proper funeral at Dhobighat Church. ( Suicide is one of the cardinal sins in Catholicism)

Chip_of-the_oldblock,
Do you have any idea who these cousin's of Arjoo are? If they are her cousins from her mom's side, then they might be those twins of Kathmandu hotel (now defunct) Pramod and Pradeep Rana, or Rabin and Sabin Rana (Jaya Pratap Rana's children). If I am correct Pramod and Pradeep are married to Samyuka (KC ) and Simrita (Rana). Coming to Samyukta I remembered one thing - Samyuka is having a roaring affair with Shashank Koirala (B. P.'s) son, that's what the grapevine says. She is still married to the Rana guy I suppose, but is two- timing him with the Koirala guy who is in turn married to a beautiful Thai doctor, Supatra, who is the SALSA queen of Kathmandu.

P-Queen,

I,too, am not in KTM to get the real scoop.

The twins have their own slew of problems to bother hanging out with P Shah. Rabin is happy playing banker and Sabin, hopefully, is just happy being home with his wife and 2 kids after serving as a Peace-Keeper in Sierra Leone. Pragun Rana is the son of another of Gen. Shanta K Malla's sisters from Kiran Bhawan in Sanepa. He's a very close associate of the CP.

The torrid fling that Samyukta is having with the Doc is frankly news to me. More power to her if it's true. She's one hot tamale, for sure! What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Her sister, Honey ( SHailendri), too, dropped for Rana hubby for some Pakistani guy who was really loaded in Toronto. I hear that she dropped him too and has found yet another man.

I hear Bijaya Lama's wife, Rakshya runs Latin Quarter, a happening place at Baber Mahal Revisited where they have sultry Salsa nights.

Whoa! P-Queen and Chip_of_the_oldblock, you guys seem to know a lot about the Rana family! Are you somehow tied to this clan, may be a Khandani Thapa or a Thakuri or something? :) It's scary, the entire system of hierarchy in Nepal; these people holding Nepal's corporate world. Any business tycoon you look at will either be a Rana/Shaha/Thapa/Thakuri or affiliated to them, like Dixits, Nepal etc... for a 'aam' Nepali tilling land or selling 'saag' by Bagmati River, they arent even aware that these tycoons who also indirectly manupulate Nepali politics dont give a shit about them or their lives. Would Paras? Or would Jaya Pratap? Or would Sashank Koirala? For that matter, GP Koirala...these ppl are so engraved with aristrocacy, so away from the everyday life of Us, why would they care what is good for us?? We achieved Democracy, but our leaders are still very much attached to feudal system, where caste, class is deeply rooted and they would want to stick to it because it is a privelege...

Sorry guys, this isnt the right thread to discuss this, but I cant even stand the Ranas still writing SJB with their names- and guess what? They should have long realized that their titles have lost the strong, bureaucratic tone to it almost 12 yrs ago!! Their holding on to it tells they arent up for change yet (change in attitude for a feudal-less societ).

This is for Ashu,

Can you provide any update on the condition of Sid and his girl? I heard that he was going to press charges, is it so?

I would be suspicious of Indian press (negative rumour mill for Nepal and her establishment). Not so long ago they printed news of similar nature and was found to be totally false.

Deepak Bista,

This is true and as your name suggest because of your feudalistic background you are trying to live in a state of self denial by blaming Indian Media.

Shame on you.

No idea what's going on, nor do I particularly care about the gossip.

I know Sid only professionally, and not personally.
I wish him and his frends a speedy recovery.

I might add -- and with justified anger -- that as a tax-paying Nepali, I am sick and tired and nauseated to constantly read/hear about Paras's acts of violence against his wife and his friends, and the way with which he goes around terrorising people as though he has absolutely no respect for other Nepalis.

It's a shame, if not a downright scandal that he and his entourage -- with all their documented violent history -- reportedly still get into these utterly stupid bar-room brawls at discos, and then expect palace security to bail them out and the Nepali press to muffle the story -- again and again.

What's the Palace going to do now? Send Paras to clean up the Bagmati and have his photo published in Kantipur as some sort of a cheap PR exercise . . . just as he was sent to clean up Few Taal last time soon after he fired guns at Everest Hotel at 3 am?

I mean, what are we, the janata .... stupid?

Why can't Paras simply grow up, and be serious about solving the problems facing the 24 million Nepalis who -- without much of a choice -- contiue to subsidise his lifetsyle?

For God knows, Nepal has tons of problems. Why are we -- in this age and time -- still terrorised (and not at all amused) by the violent antics of Paras?

We demand better from Paras because we deserve better from him . . . so long as
he's on the janata's payroll (a subject which is being openly debated in Nepal these days).

Somebody should stop Paras before, with all his violent acts accumulating to a shocking degree, he mutates into some sort of a Nepali Uday Hussain, if he hasn't already.

oohi
"in disgust and anger"

From nepalitimes.com--

There was a reception at the royal palace at 6:30 PM to celebrate Princess Himanis birthday. Later that night, another party was organised at Hotel Annapurna by the son and daughter-in-law of Ketaki Chester, daughter of Princess Helen. Prince Paras and Princess Himani attended, but the prince left before the cake was cut. He headed off to Latin Quarter at Baber Mahal, where special guests like US Ambassador James Moriarty, Indian Embassy Press Secretary Sanjay Verma, Prabhakar Shamsher Rana, Pradip Bikram Rana, Sipradi Trading chief executive officer Saurya Rana, the ex-chief priests son Sidanth Pandey and about 30 others had gathered.
A dinner was hosted at Baber Mahal Revisited around 8:30 PM and among the special guests were RPP leader Pashupati SJB Rana and his daughter, Devyani. Around 12:30 AM, a member of royal family arrived with 15-16 friends on motorcycles, and Devyani and her father ran into the group. Soldiers in the nearby barracks heard sounds of weeping. Someone was crying out, calling Devyani Bhauju.

Soon afterwards, the prince went with his friends to Galaxy Disco at Hotel Everest, where Mahek Chahal, Indian star of Naya Padosin was performing a dance. In the audience were Prabhakar Shumshere Ranas son Siddhartha and his fiance Nilima Gurung. Also present were Kumar Gorakh Shumshere and Pradip Bikram Rana with his wife Chhaya.

As Pramod Bikram Rana went to the toilet he saw journalist Sagun Lawoti, son of RPP leader Padma S Lawoti, soaked in blood after he was dragged into the bathroom and beaten brutally. The two towels in the bathroom had been soaked with blood.

When Siddhartha saw Lawotis state, he was shocked and started shouting, Whats going on here? But even before he could climb up the stairs back to the lobby with his fiance, they were both attacked. Siddhartha was beaten until his leg was broken. Nilima was also badly beaten. Pradip Bikram came to their rescue and saved them from being beaten further. Siddhartha is now in intensive care at his Himalayan Heights home near Soaltee Hotel. He will not be able to walk normally for a month. Nilimas face has been badly bruised and swollen. Lawotis nose has been fractured. Siddhartha has filed a case against his attackers.
