Dear All,
My wife is in a H-4 Status (dependent of H1) and is going to finish her bachelors degree in a few months. As a dependent she does not have a Social Security Number yet. Our plan is to change her status to F1 or OPT for that matter and try to look for a job. My question is are the employers be willing to offer her a Job even though she doesn't have a SSN? I am kinda confused. Suggestions appreciated...thanks a lot...

I dont think you can apply for OPT based on your current status H4 and finding a job with this status is very very hard. The employer will mostly not be willing to file H1-B directly for an entry level position with Bachelor's unless your spouse is extremely skilled in her area and from a top school mostly on engineering, IT, science or medical areas. I am not saying is it impossible but will be extremely difficult. In my view you have 2 options.
1st is to change her status immidetely to F1. I believe USCIS accepts change of status premium processing (not 100% sure). Do that immediatley as her graduation is comming pretty soon which I guess is in may. you can apply for OPT after that.
2nd choice is not bother to change of status and remain on H4 after which you can join IT consultancy who train you and place and eventually file H1-b. you will not have social security until H1-B is approved.
I will suggest you go to the 1st route. there might be other options too which i cant think of. probably some other people might be able to help you.
good luck

Just like mrbored suggested is to contact the international office of the college and talk to the dso. I would suggest to talk asap. On monday if you can. You dont have lot of time specially if there is no premium processing for allowed for change of status. Be prepared with documents. In the mean time check uscis.com for change of status process and be ready. If the university has large no of international students they might open on saturdays so talk to somebody at least you will get some idea.
