I am buying it for the the first time, and I am considering Glock 19.
Any other suggestions?

I already had one just last week. I purchased from local NRA lincensed gun/range store. It is an Austrian made 9 mm pistol.

Where are you located at? It is the best gun for home defense. Are you single or family person?

 I am a family person, I am from TX. I believe this 9mm, 15 rounds + one in chamber makes it 16 rounds should be good for either self defence or the family.
I read that Glock is easy to use, and very accurate. 9mm is cheap.

Yes it is cheaper than 1911. It comes with 3 magazines if you buy the Glock 19 - 4 gen which is the latest one. It is an extremly simple one.
One thing I did not like is that the trigger lock is in the trigger itself. Unlike in 1911 the trigger lock is on the top of handle.

Have you touched it? Do you have any gun experience? If not, you better take basic gun class in the local NRA authorized range store. They provide basic class and some range practice with various callibers.

I paid $603 that includes background check. Let me know your experience while purchasing and practicing at range. 

 I have not felt this gun, on the side I am also considering springfield XD 45.

 can't find Glock 19 at most of the onilne gon stores. if you find one, get it.

Did you buy XD 45? Which one did you buy? I have been using Glock 19 almost every weekend in the range. It is easy to operate. XD 45 gives more recoil I guess. Tell me your experience.

 Well I have been using AK-47 and haven't had any problem yet.
