When i was a kid (or when i was in Nepal), i used to believe in God. I did however have reservations on religion but i still believed in God. Its been a year in US now and having met people from other cultures, the existence of a supreme being doesnt make sense anymore.
I think that believeing in GOd instills in a person faith, confidence and positivity to get through good times and be appreciative of the bad ones. I want my children to have these qualities so i dont want to tell them that GOd doesnt exist. Moreover, i cant imagine what my parents/relatives will make of me when i talk to them about this. It isnt going to be pretty.
It does give me great discomfort to think about all this. I must admit i feel less confident and more pessimistic these days. I want to believe in God but my logic doesnt give in anymore. In fact, i get irritated when i hear things like "God COMMANDED you to.." "GOd will PUNISH you if..", "We are SERVANTS in from of Him" "(on Christianity): "Jesus died on the cross for you"(THere are many who have made a similar magnitude of sacrifice).
I think that God and religion are ancient theories that havent been discarded yet. And it hasnt due to the fear in people of what might happen if they didnt. One of my teachers once said "if there is no god and you believe in god, there is no harm but if there is god and you dont believe in god, there is harm". i feel this and cultural and social stigmas lead people to be religious and not question their beliefs.
I wanna know what you guys make of this.

Chaurey,
You don't feel talking about Nepal is relevant to the existential discussion we are having in this thread?

Chaurey,
I am not just any kind of Hindu. I am a Nepali Hindu. There is a specific flavor to my religion.
How can I be a Hindu when Pashupatinath no longer exists? How can I be a Hindu when Budhanilkantha temple is but a memory? How can I be proud of myself as a Hindu when my Buddhist brothers and sisters can no longer go to Swayambhu and Boudhanath?
How can we visit our places of pilgrimage above and die as a Nepali and have my body burned by the ashes of Arya ghat like my ancestors did, if there is no longer any Nepal?

Chaurey,
You would rather me not be a Nepali than to protect my country because I have religious sentiments and a sense of kinship to places like Pashupatinath, Budhanilkantha?

Chaurey,
What if I build a time machine for you and send you back to a time when you parents and your family didn't exist. Would that make you happy?

Babal Khate,
I think chaurey is right. This thread is about one straight question whether you believe in god or not. There could be several connections between religion, society, culture, moral values, development of country and so on. But when we are answering a particular question we need to be more specific about that question. If not then either we don't understand the question or we don't have the answer. We can always discuss other related issues by creating new threads.

isn't your god supposed look out for things like that? maybe talk to your god and tell him/her/it to stop that from happening? or going by bhagwat geeta's teaching "whatever happens, happens for good" let whatever happens take it's course cause it is supposedly going to happen for good. why even intervene? stop contradicting your religious belief....

And, chaurey, you claim yourself to be an atheist, such an oxymoron, ends your sentence with 'for christ sakes'.
Just try to be yourself, who you are okay.. ..

BitterTruth,
Homeyji is the joker, not me.
Since you're so damned smart. Obviously smarter than most of us here in sajha.....Why don't you explain something to me: why do you believe in science?

The question should not be about believing or not believing in science. Science is merely the study of our world and universe. It is the best guess human beings make about how our world works. Every claims we make about the universe must be tested. Is there god or not is an important question.
Also, another important thing we have looked for god a lot and have found no evidence of it's existence. furthermore, it the responsibility of the person making the positive claim to prove the claim. (burden of proof lies on the person making the positive claim.) So, people whole think god exists needs to show us, skeptics where is this thing called god.
I may claim unicorns exists. Can you prove me wrong ? I also may claim there is flying spaghetti monster ? Is it your responsibility to prove I am wrong or is it my responsibility to show these creatures do actually exist. (BTW these are classical examples)
(Personally, if you think you life is better by having a imaginary friend then go ahead. ) Just don't make false claim and talk illogical.

Bitter Truth,
You wrote in a post above:
Why am I having this weird feeling that I'm exchanging words with teenagers with little understanding about the language, life and philosophy?
Yes, BitterTruth, I am a little little baby. I am crying "Waah, waah." And you are a grown man. You are the greatest scientist and philosopher. So why have you shut up? Come and discuss, you coward!
Answer the question:
What is the basis of your belief in science?
And for those who are too damned ignorant to know that the above is a valid question, please, take the time to educate your minds:

And babal khate we do need to discuss more on those topics you and homeyji have raised. This thread can not lead us to the single conclusion on existence or non existence of god. This is more like public poll. We have our own belief or disbelief regarding the existence of god and no one is going to change his/her mind even you put strong arguments. It takes significant amount of time and confrontation with different situations to change one's mind. So better start discussing on those important issues on different threads. I will definitely participate on those.
