Divyaj gets out from the meeting with his colleagues and superiors. Aimee, his colleague is back after her maternity leave. The conference room on the far left corner E11 is buzzing with boisterous laughter and inevitably the talk revolves around -- what else, babies. As Divjay somehow manages to sleep thru the meeting, and with a stack of to-do list, a few "touch base" short conversations, and back he is at his desk. The past weekend has been crazy. Nine hours of sleep in three days, late nights and lots of scrumptious liquor and continuous doses of nicotine from the smoldering joy stick have been the highlight of his weekend. How he could have used one more off day. No not "off", but "OFF", - know what I mean? Weird how an exact word can be interpreted with completely differing and different meanings; words they are, no matter how we manipulate em', one slip and the entire context changes. He wonders if only 'life' was just another word. Hey, it is - is not it? He does not even dwell on that one now, words are complicated enough. Anyways! He has had many "off" days, but what he was looking for was an "OFF" day. He knows he is complicating things with this "off -- OFF" bit within himself, but you have no idea the quagmire he is facing. Actually he is enjoying this weirdness. It's not that he did not try, but somehow today he had to meet one tiny deadline which was big enough to cancel his planned siesta. He sighs, "Oh well!" He realizes one hour of sleep for a long day at work and then some more was not a wise thing to do. He jumps off and takes the elevator to outside lobby to inhale for some much needed dose of nicotine. As he comes out with a large coffee, and tries to light a cigarette, he could not help but smile. As he looks up to the 32nd floor, he wonders if they would even recognize him. Even weirdly enough, he waves his hand, just so/because, you know. Yes, it has been this peculiar. Oh what a weekend! Contd . . .

"everytime when they returned home ,silently ,introspective, thinking how fortunate they really were to meet each other . . ." Now one might wonder how a person can feel such an emotion in 4 mths. Oh yeah, it's been 4 months since Saloni started working with Divyaj. If you really think about it, 4 months is like a peanuts in our lifetime. But what is time after all? A measuring stick to determine closeness? Or is it just an instrument to mark the passage of days gone by? You decide. Have we all not been in a situation when we wonder what we were doing with this one person for this long a period of time? And yet feel amazingly close with other in relatively less amount of time? It's all chemistry baby. Did I hear someone say biology ;)? Hehe. :p Like they say, "It takes a minute to know someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to . . .," you know what they say after that right? No I do not know if that is true in their case. But knowing each other in the land of strangers, with certain apprehension, the ease with which they bonded was nothing surprising. Another two months and she would be gone . . . Saloni was a senior from a school in New Haven, about to graduate next semester. Oh yeah, new haven! What a name for a place. It's as if the angels got tired of heaven and moved to 'haven', thus new haven. Perfect match for Saloni ;). Where else could an angel come from? :). If only exquisiteness could kill, Divyaj would be long dead. Her demureness was alluring, her vivaciousness lethal. Divyaj was barely managing to pretend he is immune to all these. You know what they say about spaces between the fingers eh'? It was meant to be such so that another person can come and fill them. No they never held hands, never hugged, never really gazed at each other for long. A brushing of hand albeit accidentally, an awkward smiles, and fortuitous gazes were all they could manage. Would they fill those spaces between their fingers? I hope so. Again, you know what they say about hope eh'? Ah! Some other time . . .;) hehe Saloni always said, she wanted to go back home after her studies, and Divyaj, just used to nod. He did not know what he wanted, or rather what he should want. But Saloni was as determined as ever, always certain about going back. "No I do not particularly miss home, I like it here Divyaj, but I have to go," she often used to say. He liked it when she called him by name, not as sir. It was clear that she was still laded with habitual respectful psychology that they teach us back home. But make no mistake; she is a fierce lady who can hold her own with anyone. As the weeks rolled by, they often met over the weekend, went for movies, just hung around, and went for dinner - stuffs like that. Nothing fancy, just everyday kind of thing, you know. One month, and a week remained for her internship to be over. Time ? why do good ones always whoosh by so fast? They never really talked about separation. Maybe they never wanted to. You know how it is; talking about separation only makes it even more difficult to bear the discomfort. Saloni had started to become a little more reserved in last couple of days. Divyaj was hoping she would tell him what was bothering her. TO be contd . . .

That Saturday evening, as they sat in some cafe, sipping their coffee, as they watched the burnt caramel and purple merged with horizon, Saloni, what appeared after much deliberation, uttered, "37 days!" "What's that?" - Divyaj asked. "Number of days." - Saloni said. "yeah , I know you said days. But what was that for?" Divyaj stated. "Nothing." - Saloni. As she looked far away somewhere, maybe up till her eyes took her, and appeared lost, as if her mind was sailing to some distant place; Divyaj understood. Her eyes told her what she did not. The melancholy in her eyes while uttering those words was more expressive than her words. Yet Divyaj did not know what she was trying to say. Was she sad because she had to leave him, or her other colleagues? Maybe she was just upset to go back to her school? Or may be because she was about to back home forever in 6 months, and those 37 days only made her realize that. You know how it is when you know stuffs, and yet you do not. (You know chai omnipresent idiom hai yaha :p - k bhancha ni, esstyle k ;) hahaha) Do not get confused. She always wanted to go back. But you know how it is, when you live in a place for years and years, although it can never be a home, it remains close to oneself. A second home if you will. But whatever it was, it felt like time has mulcted them out of their reverie. A jolt if you will. That night they quietly separated, did not call each other over Sunday. Slowly the communication at work was more because it was essential and less just because. Although, each still waited another for lunch - regardless if another one was late. Each waited another, while they left from work - regardless if another had to stay late. It had become a habit, An unspoken commitment, if you will. Only they talked less, they often found each other crossing their eyes at the same time. And those half smiles . . . You know how it is when you can neither smile because the object of your affection is a friend, nor can you snivel because you can never be anything more? Divyaj often wondered what they are - what is the name of their relationship, if any. Mere friendship? Too strong and profound an emotion for that; love - too hazy and perplexing. It's got to be simple right? Guess what, no freaking thing in life is. And how can he forget, he's got to be pragmatic, and her too. But why this quagmire for nothing? Each day the restlessness grew, often trying to reason out with oneself for both of them. It's not that they were na?ve of the bond that has developed between them. But was it love? Or was it something else? Say like . . . ummmmm . . . something you know. Do I have to freaking tell you about everything. ;) hehe. Got to be certain with love, you- know-what- I-mean. One should never say, "I love you," you know, unless one really means it, who knows what the other person might do. Say something crazy like actually believing it. hehe ;) But did I tell you about taking too long to decide and missing the bus? This freaking life - why do everything has to have gazillion connotations. But you know what I think. Cupid just might have struck them - just. How else would u explain, the millions of stolen gazes, how else would you explain the long silence where they felt like they said millions things, how else you explain the urge to meet each other, how else you explain the twitch in their heart in the light of separation? How else would you explain the ease with which one can be what s/he is? You know what I think, of all the things that tells you that this is "the one," I would assume that being ourselves without any pretentious masks, and being comfortable with it with that person is the biggest clue. And Chances are, that person could be the one. "Could be." But what were Divyaj and Saloni? Maybe I would never know. It can nto be love now, could it? Nah... well maybe be. Damn! Contd...

But why this quagmire for nothing? Each day the restlessness grew, often trying to reason out with oneself for both of them. It's not that they were na?ve of the bond that has developed between them. But was it love? Or was it something else? Say like . . . ummmmm . . . something you know--------------------------------------------->>>>>>> It wasn?t love but it was lovely by Apol0o It wasn?t love but it was lovely, It had all in it that it takes- To string the moments, make a garland. Of shared happiness for a lifetime, Yet, it had nothingness, a nada that stopped, Pushed back and made it die. We had a wonderful time, chatting, Sharing those moments of happiness: A bit of love a bit of life a bit of living- In borrowed times and distant rhymes, But we did not have a choice either. It wasn?t love but it was lovely, The day when we met in real life, Cramped ? was love and jet-lagged too. Brown was the mood and blues the sky, Though I thought things would get better. It did! But then again, momentary was the stay. Time plays the trick - parting and meeting, Waxes and wanes for an extension which it hardly gets. It wasn?t love but it was lovely, That it all happened and it all was real. So close and yet so far, the rightness and all the wrongs, Got mixed up one day and made it the way it is. It saw the ups it saw the downs and it saw no future But the present we lived, which now is the past, Was all that really mattered? It wasn?t love but it was lovely. Written By: Apol0o ? (2005)
