Curious whether anyone's renewed their passport recently, and how it went for them.

I was dumb-struck  by the attiutude of the Nepal Embassy at DC when I inquired on this matter.

So here's what my experience was like - their site provides an application form. It supposedly has links to instructions on how to fill it up and what size of photo to use and all that. Those links don't open. The form is asking for 35 X 45 photos. Places in US take 51X51 passport size photos.

I called last month and spoke in English - some guy piked up the phone, told me to go to their website, follow the instructions and send the application. And the passport would processes in 2 months time once they've received it.

I found out about the photo size discrepancy and I called again, and this time I spoke in Nepali. Diffrent guy picked it up. Here's what he said
  • A4 size in Nepal is different from A4 size in US
  • If I filled out the form available on the website, I'll never get the new passport. Because of the size issue (both paper size and photo size), the goverment won't approve my application.
  • So the only option - I need to send a paid envelope to them with a letter enclosed asking for a hard copy of the form.
  • They send the form to me, I fill it up and then send it back to them.
  • They send it to Nepal, and it'll come back in 3 months after that.
Is it just me, or is this pretty much the only way of getting my passport renewed?

I recently received new passport from Embassy.
Document:

a) Copy of Nepali citizenship
b) Old passport
c) Fees (money order)
d) Return Envelopes (Used small size envelopes that fits passport)
e) A4 size passport form, you print on bigger size and trim it to make A4, how hard is that?
f) 3 copies of photographs each taken three times (total of nine), take picture yourself and send them three different options to pick
You can use one of similar link to change your BIG picture to passport size
http://www.makepassportphoto.com/

Its surprising we cannot know the size and requirement of document necessary to fulfill. Embassy doesn't help gathering requirements but they will call you if something is missing. Its fun to DIY project. Please give time, you will come through it. Take picture one day, fill out form other day, make money order some other day. It doesn't happen in 5 minutes.

In the box where it says town/village, what should I write? I am asking because in the instructions they say it has to be whatever is in your citizenship. Tara mero citizenship ma testo kei chaina, just district, muncipality ra ward matrai cha. Plus, tyo mandatory box ho (tya cheu ma asterisk cha) I tried calling them but the line is always busy. Thanks for the response.

Maxpayne: Go to staples or office max and buy a black stamp pad. Just dip your thumb onto the pad and stamp it inside the rectangle on the MRP application form.

I submitted my application in November and was told to pick up in February. However, I have not received it yet. I had my family members, back home, inquired regarding this matter at the ministry then they said that my application was on hold due to some undisclosed mistakes in my application form. I exchanged several emails and they told me to scan a new application and email along with the bill of payment. After that, they told my family that my pp has been renewed but it has not been shipped yet. Still waiting :(

@CARDINAL, thanks for the response, same here as well.
@KALYX, hi, very shocking its been now 7 months on your case right.
@ PSHRESTHA78, hi, lucky you, myself and cardinal are now on 3 months which as per the mentioned time frame should arrive.

Anyhow, Cardinal/Kalyx, let's cross the finger and let's hope it will arrive soon. All the best to you all and myself.

Its been 13 weeks I applied. Embassy asked me to contact in couple of weeks. Its hard to get things done if Nepali govt is involved.

@ Yolmo: I finally received my passport :-) :-) :-). I had applied for MRP together with my wife. It was received my embassy on Mar 25. Her passport was issued on 27 Apr while mine was only issued on 28 May. I have no idea why there was a delay of a month between hers and mine. It was then mailed out of embassy a month later.

I had renewed my passport recently from the embassy of Nepal at dc.
To fill the form I used the scanneds ample copy of some girl that was posted on embassy website.
A4- paper:- I requested the fedex kinkos to cut the paper with the required measurements- they did :)
2"-2" I got picture taken from Walmart and then used the measurement ruler to cut them 35*45
I mailed those document on March 12.
In between time, I called then couple of time and was told that it would take at least 2-3 months from the day they received the documents.
Finally, I received my passport on June 27.
Now I know that it would be better to wait for at least three months before you make a call to embassy.
I hope this info helps ..
Best regards
SN

Regarding Passport picture, came to know that walgreens can print standard passport size picture for mexico. Looks like it meets our nepalese standard. So decided to go with it. I also saw their m/c have dropdown list which have different countries like Spain, India etc as options besides Mexico and US.

I don't think Nepal embassy understands how important passport is for us, Even issuing a temporary passport now takes 8-10 business days, it is lame. Why can't they expedite the process? if they have less people why don't they hire people, I dont mind paying little extra if they expedite the application. Why give lame excuses when you can get the job done!

Frustrated with Nepal Embassy USA.
