OM at Harvard Square

OM Restaurant, Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

The word OM (AUM) signifies the sound that created universe. It is the symbol of Brahma the creator of the universe. A very religious significant word for the Hindu and the Buddhist - OM… Every mantra starts with OM. It represents primordial vibration from which everything begins…

And so OM at Harvard Square begins the disappointment as you enter through the
Nepali carved door that leads inside to the lounge suggest nothing has been created at Harvard Square, but a mediocre translation of OM - Culturally along with the Culinary…

Food preparation has all the pomp and ceremony but no AAH to the palate. The chef’s compliment – is a total waste and a poor start to the fanfare that it so pretentiously glorifies. The starter popcorn with the cheese sprinkled on it tastes dull. There is nothing modern to American food as you dig into the Lamb Shank.

What is more sad and petrifying is the Buddha looking at your food and the drink. Buddha that symbolizes peace, non – violence, is put on the holes in the wall and embedded… overlook the tables… while people sink their knives into the pork bellies and the shank. There is no Nirvana but only the noises and the horrifying deconstruction of an old tradition, culture and the art, of the people, the place, and the artist – be it the owners father. Buddha must be crying somewhere…

The only piece of art that personifies the place is Kal Bhairav – the Lord Shiva himself – the destructor or the destroyer… OM restaurant – where you could have seen the beginning of all things that could be calm, serine, and wholesome is really a place that emphasizes the modern world where there is nothing but destruction. And, so Kal Bhairav symbolizes the destruction of all that could have been good… if the creator of the place had really thought correctly the usage of such a powerful symbol OM – as you even utter the word OM you can feel the peace within yourself.

As I looked at the Kal Bhairav – the so powerful presence… I must give thanks to the artist that created it. Looking at it you can feel the power and you can almost see yourself transferred to Hanuman Dhoka in Kathmandu Nepal where the 10 foot tall stone statue of the same sits… My heart wants to take the artist creation not only of the Kal Bhairav, but every Buddha statue the every art and rescue it from the rude owner and take it away from the “bhati” or bar and put it in a place that it would truly belong – such as a museum of traditional art… where people would appreciate the artist and the creator and know where it comes from.

The fusion of the east and west leaves a bad taste in the mouth – a bad taste in the intellect and a misplaced restaurant at Harvard Square. It tries to belong and cater to the intellectual capital of the world – only to insult it.

Sanders don't jump to your own conclusions!! I did not say you have to love dal bhat and gundruk to be a patriotic Nepali, Why I love to sample all kinds of food from all over the world. And as for speaking in English or Nepali is not the issue, I am thankful that we are fortunate to know a foreign language other than our mother tongue but I feel very comfortable and at home when I meet someone form my hometown and I choose to talk in Nepali with a Nepali, is there a problem Mr. sanders?? You can save your english skills to speak to someone who does not understand your language or to translate to your non Nepali speaking friends. and if you are working in a English speaking setting please do so but I do not want to forget my language and will speak whenever I get the opportunity. I think I am far from getting carried away, I am just realistic and for those Nepalese who refuse to speak in Nepali I feel sorry for them.

Hush up little pup you are yapping like a pet of Mr. Yonzon boasting of being a regular sounds like you are more a drunkard hanging around the bar. From your writing sounds like you need to learn to respect before even yapping that word respect. We went there for dinner not for drinks yapper so before bragging about OM and the owner review your own comments and have some self respect and don't accuse me of being drunk!!

and btw, $12 for a cocktail common. i have not been in OM but I do not think it is that upscale... any american bars and/or restaurants thats $8 for any liquor [ couvessior, hennesy] and $10 for any cocktails...

of course there are some yuppie in the range where you end of paying $20-$25 for a cocktail or a shot of whiskey... but i still donot think OM and surrounding is in that range... (O:

No wonder why this puppy was being so supportive of the owner because she claims to be hanging around there so much wagging her tail. and mistaking everyone to be of her breed is her way of proving how low she can stoop, and I am sorry even though she wants to be seen and be known as cool her demeanor proves otherwise from her use of language she sounds too trashy to even respond to, a person who claims to be at a bar every other day is calling a person who goes out once in a while stingy I guess she does not have a family or a job that she can afford to frequent restaurants every second day wow! I guess she also does not have any manners using abusive words probably is her way of being cool too bad and she was talking about having respect. A totally poor joke and a bad taste to the mouth. Look at the provocative picture she sent Mr. Bhusan to get a drink out of him!!!You can judge her from that pic. I guess

Ashuji, my intention was to just bring to your attention that a Nepali guy who is one of the two owners of OM was very rude and lacked customer service skills whatsoever and did you see his fan named Hushpuppy pouncing at me and calling me names and stingy? This poor girl claims to be visiting OM every second day!! I would be worried to death if my daughter did that. and yet she has the audacity to use foul language in support of her friend Mr. yonzon and even accused me of being drunk at one point, when she is the one at the bar every other day??? I hope drinking soda!!!! I don't wish anyone ill but no matter what I still stick to the fact that people in the restaurant business especially need to be polite and I know you feel the same way too.

Looks like I missed a very interesting conversation here. A couple of comments:

Bathroom Coffee - Kathmandu Spice is certainly much more homely and hospitable than OM. Without a doubt. But I wish they would improve their service - it looks like the staff there need a triple shot of espresso. They are so slow. I'll try them again this weekend and see if they have gotten any better. They have the potential to be a very good restaurant if they can do something about their service.

Dimple - I am sorry to learn you had a bad expereince there and I see where you are coming from. I too would be angry if I looked at things the way you did. But I have to say something that I have been telling others both on and off Sajha: what in the world makes any one think OM is a Nepalese restaurant? Of course you will be disappointed if you go there with that expectation. But people have only themselves to blame for not finding that out before they go there. If you live in a metropolitan city in America, or at least in the east coast, most people these days look up a restaurant on the internet before they go, just so that they know what to expect of the place. I do that for any restaurant I go to, perhaps with the exception of the local pop-and-mom Chinese restaurants. You need to know what kind of restaurant it is before you go there - if you don't, you go there at your own peril.

Also, I will admit, that the owner's mannerism leave a lot to be desired. I am with you there and nothing can be as bad as going to have a nice dinner only to have your whole evening ruined. I know the feeling - I have experienced it too. But it seems he is not the only one who ruined your dining experience. Yes, that is an awful attitude to not speak in a language you know but I am quite amazed at your friends attitude to not speak in English either. I'd say one is as bad as the other.

But I am glad you chose to speak your mind on Sajha and hope you will understand that I am speaking mine.

Hush - I agree, OM is/was a very happening place. Have you checked out Felt and 360 lounge - not on the same scale but pretty happening too.

Have a good weekend all!

Whatever anyone and everyone is saying in these posts... ! Customer service is number one in USA or anywhere - especially if you are from the service industry. I don't care what anyone says - Nepali or non Nepali - no one has the business to treat people badly and be insulting... especially if you are running an establishment that you want to succeed! Arrogance and EGO in a business doesnot WORK!
In fact if the owners are reading this - it will give them insight and hope they stop to behave hadly and discriminate... they should also know the power of the internet and word of mouth that brings or stops business .... There are hunderend of restuarants in this area - why go where you are going to be treated badly...
One can forgive badfood, bad drinks BUT NOT BAD BEHAVIOUR!
We all want our people to succeed and encourage Nepali enterpreneurship - there are many business run by Nepali people in this country and beyond and one Nepali success motivates others... BUT one bad behaviour and high handednees - hurts the community... and the Nepali sentiments...
