The Swiss cities of Geneva and Zurich offer the best quality of life according to research published by Mercer Consulting in March 2005. Vancouver (Canada) is placed third, followed by Vienna (Austria) and Frankfurt (Germany).

EIU names Vancouver, Melbourne and Vienna as 'best' cities in the world

Cities in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia continue to rank highly. Munich and Düsseldorf both move up the rankings, from 10th and 12th place respectively, to share joint 5th place with Frankfurt. Munich’s rise is due to more efficient waste removal systems and better housing for expatriates, while Düsseldorf’s transport and standards of international schooling have improved. Bern, Copenhagen, and Sydney are pushed down slightly to rank 8 with scores of 105.

In the US, Honolulu and San Francisco rank highest in joint 25th position (score 102), mainly because they have lower crime levels than other US cities. Boston, New York, Portland, and Washington follow in positions 36, 39, 42, and 42 respectively (score 100.5, 100, 99, 99), while Houston ranks lowest at position 68 (score 94).

The analysis was based on an evaluation of 39 quality of life criteria for each city, including political, social, economic, and environmental factors, personal safety and health, education, transport, and other public services.

Baghdad remains the world’s least attractive city for expatriates. Its low score (14.5) is due to the recurrent threat of attacks against people, multinational organisations, and government institutions in the area. Other poor-scoring cities for overall quality of life include Bangui in the Central African Republic (score 29), Brazzaville in Congo, and Khartoum in Sudan (29.5 and 31 respectively).

I take my comment back and say london is better than new york . They are only behind on two american cities. That proves they are in general better than almost all american cities.


Do you know how newyork fell down on knees like twin towes during olympic bid against london because they have not enough infrastructure. You must know the quality of security in london. After the london bombing how quickly the police caught up the culprits. The cctv based security is the best in the world without a shadow of a doubt.

Timile padhenau bhane mero problem hoina. Dont give just blatant opinion give some supporting facts. I have given the outcome of research. Infact the US cities are below even their neighbour canada. Many consider vancouver as the best city in the world.

I wont say liverpool is good because it is nowhere compare to london. London holds 19.7% of whole england economy and that is huge and many considers london as a business capital of the world. Can any american city do that.

Talking about people i can give you the address of american who are studying with me and who says the facility wise london is the best cin the world.

In england we have free medical and we dont have to pay for it. I dont know about america. Does you have free medical? Tell me what facility in american city , that london doesnot have? Did american got the kind of success like London police did in London bombing using their CCTV. Didnt america lost to london in olympic bid because the facility in lonodn is overall better. Fact of the matter that crime in america is more is due to the fact that legal age is 21 here in london it is 16. People from america comes to england because here is no drinking age as they say. They come to enjoy the best pub, club.

And i have to agree with the fist thread whoever has written it after seeing the resarch result that London life is better than america but not australia. Overall australian cities have scored very highly.

I think London is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar better than many of the cities in USA but of course other EURopean cities are much better than London.

Now lets see the other side of London

1. Too expensive

2. Travelling sucks ( trains alwyas late... ya always)

3. Very dirty ( I dont know abt US cities coz never been there, but while other Euroepan cities it is really dirty)

4. Very very very busy.. (thats what the world is :-)

5. Bad weather and alwys windy (for those who live in warm places)

6. More Nepalis more problems (sometims matra hai)

7. Expensive colleges, high tuition fee

8. UK visa inot SCHENGEN visa, so if if u wanna travel other Euroepan countries u got to get visa. (here the problem is not getting visa but MONEY and time and u got to plan, so u cant just get up one fine day and take a train to Paris , U need visa and the visa fee cold be more expensive than train ticekt ha ha ha)

9. Many Gay people..... (sorry its not my business just posted here)

10. Always traffic.....always traffic.......(Even to enter city area u need to pay for ur vehicle) I dont know how is it in the US

Weather-wise, UK is really dull. Children become afraid when they see a fireball in the sky, you know what I mean?

Scenery in Wales in out of this world. Imagine Pokhara and add white sheep and sea to it. You get the picture.

Havent had a chance to go to many other countries so can not compare it with others but USA and Australia must be better than UK in the weather and food department.

I have heard that Germany is one of the best places to live in terms of pay and living standard.

Amazing i hope you dont live in zurich or geneva. They are great city . even my british friend gets awed when we talk about those cities and they have been to almost everypart of the world from europe, americas and downunder.They also feel berlin, frankfurt and other german cities are great too.

1. My perception of London is it is one of the most complete city. Take an example of sports. Like in american if we have to watch US open we have to go to new york. Then for formula one we have to travel to indianapolis and so on. It is there but more scattered. But london has all in all. London have great football teams like arsenal and chelsea, great venue like wembly, cricket wise it has lords(mecca of cricket) and oval . People here dont need to travel distance to watch tournament. Similarly if you talk about wimbledon the most prestigious grand slam it is in london.

2.I again want to emphasize the point that london won the olympics because the jury thought that it can best meet the standard for players and millions of people who will flock to the city. Paris , madrid, newyork ,moscow lost the battle because there standard was not as good as london.

3.London heathrow airport routes to the most number of destination in the world. People can go to 3 countries scotland, wales, northern ireland without requiring visa. Most student travel to europe after their study because it is easy to get shenzhen visa. Flights are cheap. If you dont like plane go by bus u can see many other countries in between .eg. if u go to germany from u may get to see netherlands and france on the way.

4.Apart from this in UK medicine is free. I dont know about america. But all the people gets free health services.

5.Crime in london is far less compared to america probably london operated under cctv. In america they sell guns in WALMART.

6. Many nepali and indian artist comes and performs every month. I dont think they will do this in any other cities so frequently.

7. Indian movie freaks can watch movies because hindi movies is one of the main market here

8.No cities in the world have as much world class universities as london has. Imperial college, kings college, queen mary are to name the few.

9. London is expensive but u can also make good living if you find good job. It has lots of oppertunities.

10. London pubs, bar are considered in the world. No drinking age.


But i have to agree some part of london is dirty like wembly and south hall but it is the places where mostly indians stay (not disrespecting any of indian). Many other places are quite neat.

I will still stick to point london is one of the most complete city in the world. Although some cities of switzerland and germany are better.l

ramkuari you talked about large electronics company. If the company is large it must be multinational and there is no way any company being multinational and not being in london . Even america eyes on london as a gateway to europes market.

There are more oppertunities here than in any other american cities as this is business capital of the world. But then to compare london with whole US is an unfair comparision as u cannot compare country with city.

About the diversity thingy. I agree england is not as diversified as US. But then london is different. You have to be here to know how much diversified it is. Many considers most diversified city in the world. Only in london there are 15000 nepalese. Most of the top post in england is held by non whites.If u take them out the business will collapse.

London is a complete city whatever way you look at it. You can get very old monument to the latest technolgy. The transportation system is best in the whole world. Believe it or not many people living in london works in france almost on a daily basis. My house mates dad is one of them.

I was in edinburgh in scotland last month and i found out edinburgh is very good as well. many considers europe largest economy germany as the best place to live in. london is cosidered commericial capital of the world so there is no reason to believe that here there will be less oppertunities.

Only downside of london i can recall is people so busy. If u go to any station or underground u see people running . Even on escalator they tend to run. They have no time at all. Weather may not be as great US but of course it is not prone to katrina and rita is it?
