brother, history of gurungs n magars r highly distorted. they were believed to b decendent of sum indian rajputs or rajasthani or something n hindunuised eventually by the rulers mainly jungabahadur since he was srii tiin of lamjung n surrounding areas that hav  many grg n magar popualtion as to bring them under his terms. also, i dont know how r limbus n magars related but it is historical facts that few battle between limbu n then gorkha force commanded by magars halted citing such reasons. thakuri itself r in controversy now, they claim to b distinct ethnic but sum argues that it is more a title given to rulers, ie, rana were kuwars or chettris but they r  termed as thakuris. many western principalities prior to unification were  ruled by magars who were also given thakuri title, could b one of the reason for thier facial appearance to depicit both mongolian n aryan features. there could b different explanation, too but for now thats wat i hav read n hav understood.

i am not saying only magars were gorkha soldiers in prithvi narayans era, i was just giving an example of one of their paltaan,  they had equal number n contribution including chettris n other khas tribes but our history books r so much in favour of only that high ruling class people who r over glorified n sadly which continues to happen with other historical events too. but the history from british and indian sides doesnt distort the real events n puts forward as accurate as possible and most of the service men r from rai, limbu, grg, magar, chettris tribes that brings biasness as us to b only for the service of foriegn imperials. thats wat i am trying to prove wrong by mentioning magar, grg, n kiratis paltaan in nepal army that we r equally contributing for the safeguard of our nation as well. n in times if demanded hav gone to extreme by joining armed revolution to change the political scenario of whole country along with fellow nepalese brothers.

Respect to all the Gurkhas who fight for Political Causes of India (biased political agenda of India in Kashmir and other inflicted places , UK (Questionable and Moral Borderline War with in Afganistan and other NATO bullshit), and Singapore for the brighter future of their kids and family.

Respect to all the Gurkhas who work outside in 50 degrees temperature in the Middle East working in inhumane conditions for the sake of their kids and children.

Respect to all the Gurkhas who fought within Nepal from the unification of nepal, War with the Anglos, helping Anglos supress freedom fight in India, being part of killings of lots of freedom fighters in nepal itself ( all the freedom fighters killed in during Mahendra's rule by Nepal Army, and all the Gurkhas who fought to get Rid of Gynendra.

And finally, Respect to all the second generation Gurkha's Kids who think Gurkhas were there to create peace and justice around the world and not there for the sake of their Kids and Families.

LONG LIVE FOREIGN EMPLOYMENT !!!!! Let all Nepalese be some kind of Gurkha so that he can be proud of himself. If Hitler was still ruling the world and had needed Gurkha help..brave and loyal gurkhas would be helping Germany from building guns to standing on the front line for his cause.

We all are Gurkhas to our need. If we NEED to be a gurkha we know how to be one. And i stress on the word NEED.

herealone and yakthung bros,

when someone says, that village belongs to this caste, that caste, this simply means the dominant caste inhabits that village. same with Gorkha, majority of the population is magar. there are other castes too. remember, baburam is from gorkha.

magars and thakuris are two distinct elites of nepal warriors. as yakthung said, Hudaon did extensive research and was impressed and set a trend to recruit magar, gurung, rai, limbus. u hardly find tamangs, sherpas, thakuris in the british or indian army. newars, bahuns, chettris occpy different proffesions. it is again about majority - magars and gurungs are the choicest races for gurkha army.

and due to them, the rest of Nepal enjoys the fame being the 'LAND OF THE GURKHA' so we are obliged to salute them.

btw, I am a full blooded gurkha with many relatives in british army and I do not agree with some of their views. That is tottaly different matter. Several are in Iraq and Afganistan.

By occupation, I should be in UK but here I am, studying hard to be someone in academic arena. And I am happy with my decision.

Snowfed River wrote above, "magars and thakuris are two distinct elites of nepal warriors. as yakthung said, Hudaon did extensive research and was impressed and set a trend to recruit magar, gurung, rai, limbus. u hardly find tamangs, sherpas, thakuris in the british or indian army. newars, bahuns, chettris occpy different proffesions. it is again about majority - magars and gurungs are the choicest races for gurkha army."

While I agree with your other points, I believe you are wrong on the above remark.  You will find whole lot of Tamangs in the British and Indian Gurkha regiments.  Do keep in mind that one of the thirteen Victoria Cross awardees is a Tamang - Ganju Lama.

Tamangs, like Rai Limbu, were recruited mostly from East Nepal - Dharan's Ghopa Camp.  Now that Dharan Camp is closed and the only recruiting center open is that of Pokhara, obviously you will see mostly Gurungs and Magars among the recruits because they are the locals of central Nepal.

Tamangs, particularly from Darjeeling, are found mostly in Clerical (especially 10GR) and Signals regiments because of they were more educated than their western brethrens.

On a different note, it bugs me to hear from those of us who keep saying, with obvious tinge of jealousy, that the Gurkhas are the mercenaries who are willingly being used for a foreign country.  If that is the case, all of us who work abroad in different professions are mercenaries - whether you call yourself Doctor, Engineer, 7-Eleven Gas Station Operator, or what not.  I_my said, "well we don't die for another country."  Tell that to the kid who got shot in Houston.  Or the hundreds who die anually in Middle-East.  The fact is, in this global economy, we sell our talents.  It just so happened that among martial clans of Nepal, globalization occured 150 years ahead.  They were able to sell their services well ahead of us.  Take it as is.

Anyway, I very much enjoyed the documentary.  Mr. August, thank you for posting it.

Riten Bro,

It is again about majority. I spent much of my boyhood in Dharan and I understand what u saying. Of SETAMAGURALI, magars and gurungs makes the bulk of the foreign armed forces and of course there are other catses too.

That was our GREAT past GURKHALI haru, when we fought for our country
but now we don't have any real existence in present. Honestly we all
know, nobody gives a S H I T about gurkhalese any more. We Nepalese
still like to talk about it because it's the only one of the thing we
can talk about and be proud of. We don't have anything to be proud in
present to talk about. What do u think? world still takes us as bravest
soldiers. WTF. Nepalese joining Brithish army is fake pride. It's just
like going to katar or Dubai for work. They also get killed there. If
Nepal would have been economically strong then would still Nepalese go
to join British army to get killed for other peoples for fake pride and
load of cash. World might used to think we were brave soldiers before
but now we are just a poor peoples who are ready to die for them for
money. That's the truth, so far I think. If you have different thinking
or way of looking at it I would definitely want to know.

herealone bro,

I am just wondering, how many have been gone back to Nepal after successfully completing their study? Not even 1%.

If you are new here; we all said that, "I am going back to Nepal."

But, if you really want to go back and do something good for the country, I salute you.
