For God's sake Lootekukur, I beg you to try to understand what I am saying here. Isn't it implicit in itself about opinions, that it can be agreed or disagreed upon? Why do we explicitly have to stress the same point for goodness sake? You say a person A is X. That does not become "personal" according to your logic. I say A is not X but Y. Your logic says it makes me going "personal" . I don't understand where rationality fits in here. If I refute your opinion about A, you accuse me on discussing about individuals. Please enlighten me.

harey meek_misfit bro, i think i am misunderstood here. as per your analogy, i said A is X-- that's my observation. you said A is Y and NOT X and that's according to your observation. i have neither agreed nor disagreed with your statement/observation and i have never complained it to be "personal" or offensive. the thread asked to simply name the "persons" who "you" think are good orators and that's what i did. i might have deviated from the topic a bit as i don't count Dr. Rijal as one of the best orators in nepal, however, i do regard him as one of the most learned and intelligent persons and academicians in nepalese academia. if you have different opinions about him, then that's fine! i just don't want to argue on individuals in this forum or elsewhere. if it was pertaining to an organization, group or a school of thought or of actions of a person that have direct impact on the society, by and large, i would have but i don't believe in simply dragging an individual's name in a public forum for discussion. that's all! LooTe

He has naturally gifted 'communication skills' and certainly he is one of the greatest orator in the history of Nepal when it comes to dealing with "special interest groups" for "special interests".

misfit bro, dude, before reading your last post, i thought, you have some degree of understanding to what i was talking about. if it sounds like "yakety yak" --whatever that means in your terminology-- then better not read my posts and comment coz i may/may not be boring to other sajhaites but you could very well be! i ONLY said we don't have to argue everytime we disagree especially when it's on individuals. i may have arguments from my side to give more validity to my statements but i don't feel the need of it and it's my prerogative. Same applies to you or anyone else for that matter and that's perfectly fine! if that sounds like an admittance of any sort from my side, then read CAREFULLY what others write before making a comment and to make your understanding a tad bit easier in this case-- FYI, i mentioned the "deviation" part for a different note. NOT on what you're thinking! jeez!!! no offense! LooTe

Lootekukur ji, "i might have deviated from the topic a bit...... " That was what you said. Again you say: "i mentioned the "deviation" part for a different note. NOT on what you're thinking! " Can you quote me where I claimed that your deviation was on " what I was thinking" ? Stop this monotonous lullaby of "agreement and disagreement". You don't seem to notice I have never disagreed of that.

hahahahaha...misfit bro, please quote the COMPLETE sentences when you quote, else you might risk yourself to half-baked information/knowledge. 1) you wrote: Minendra Rijal is another false intellectual who pretends to know everything but quite really doesn't. 2) this is what i wrote: i might have deviated from the topic a bit as i don't count Dr. Rijal as one of the best orators in nepal, however, i do regard him as one of the most learned and intelligent persons and academicians in nepalese academia. 3) and in response you wrote: If finally you have realized that you have deviated from the topic, then thats good. Better late than never. so i have NOT deviated from what i said about Dr. Rijal, mind you! you are entitled to your opinion and so am i. i have never said your statement was personal and or offensive. if you really want me to open up a bit on Dr. Rijal, not that i claim you could have any less, but as for i am concerned, i have had quite a long working experience in the academic field of nepal for quite some time and without intending to sound pompous, i believe, i have, fairly tightly, felt the pulse-beat of the existing scene of academics in nepal and the potential of the personalities involved in it. in "comparative" basis, Dr. Rijal sure does stand out among others. hence my statement about him in the first post.

Loote Ji, Why these naïve assertions? Granted, you have enormous respect for a “living encyclopedia.†It does not behoove a rational mortal like yourself to rave and rant about any individual’s stock of knowledge because this thread is about Orators. Put bluntly, this thread does not give a DAMN about this utterly divine mortal ,who according to you, possesses almost GODLY knowledge “relatively†speaking (is this the “Relativism†they offer in philosophy 101?) Do you get the point though...Bottom line is you deviated from day 1 dude! By the way, I thought you only liked talking about “an organization, group or a school of thought or of actions of a person that have direct impact on the societyâ€. TO be honest, your logic, or lack thereof, against MEEKMISFIT should drive you dizzy by now. You are going GA-GA over everyone’s right to express and adhere to their opinion, that is all you are saying to him, and the poor fellow MEEKMISFIT is trying to convince you that THIS ARGUMENT IS UTTELRY NAÃVE. If you don’t see the point I am trying to make, let’s wait for scientists to invent some kind of “pills of sanityâ€. That might help you comprehend the silliness of your logic…oh wait, why not ask the living encyclopedia? He might enlighten you…..

Goodness Gracious Lootekukur ji, You sure have talent to push people to the threshold of sanity. Please read this sentence again and again and yet again until it stimulates your brain cells: "If finally you have realized that you have deviated from the topic, then that's good." That was what I said. It's about deviation from topic, not from the opinion about Mr X . Where did I say you deviated from your opinion about Mr X? Yet you throw this fallacious statement to me: "so i have NOT deviated from what i said about Dr. Rijal, mind you!" Was the heat of the argument so unbearable to you that you finally gave way to disclose about the ways you are acquainted with Mr X "in the academia" or "few personal meetings"? That was totally uncalled for Loote ji. I have shields to protect myself with your arsenal of acquaintances(yes, me too !!!) but I can't bring this here. And thats what we call "not being personal". Moreover, you are deliberately dragging the word "offensive" along with the word "personal". Please rectify this fallacy again. It was implicit in your thread that I was infact getting personal. Please note again, I said "implicit". Understand the difference here. Yet, you are unnecessarily defending yourself with no provocative premises of argument from me by saying :"i have never said your statement was personal and or offensive". That too in bold and black.

LOL! meek bro, i am sorry if i sounded like a nuisance--although i did not intend to-- coz for the first time in this forum, i have gotten the impression that i pissed more than one head seriously bad--that's my observation-courtesy- the"implicit" message i got from some of your postings ni pheri ;p. at the risk of dragging this discussion to further boredom and triviality for others, let me reiterate few points to clear my thoughts, if i may. in the very first post, I wrote: in academia, to me, Dr. Minendra Rijal is a living encyclopedia. he may not be greatest of the orators, but boy, he seem to "know" everything. now when did i claim him to be the greatest of the orators? i mentioned his name coz i thought, although not impressively articulate, he got some vision worth a note. if sajha does not allow that bit of leverage to divert from the topic, then it’s not the sajha i have known for years! in response you wrote: Minendra Rijal is another false intellectual who pretends to know everything but quite really doesn't if the "diversion from the topic" thing bothered you so much then why did NOT you inform or alarm me right away after my first post? instead you continued on and presented your opinion on him --which is fine! but why NOW, after so many posts, you want to tell me that i diverted from the topic in the first place by bringing Rijal in the scene? i don’t understand this inconsistency in your part. secondly, whether you get the “implicit†feeling or otherwise, i have NOT said IMPLICITLY OR EXPLICITLY that your following statement to my first post was personal. but you wrote: It is non personal when you quote somebody but becomes personal when I quote the same person. Is this a subtle hypocrisy?> if you got that implicit feeling, then i can’t help it coz have already clarified that i have not done or said anything intentionally to disturb you or others. usablues, first thing first hai. agreed...the thread was asking for the orators and i did divert from the topic a bit. but as i explained to meek, if minor diversions from the main topic like this was not one of essence of sajha, many users here would not even participate! at least, that's how i have known sajha to be. if you have different impression about it, then sorry for the assumption but you must be a newbie here. secondly, i named Dr. Rijal coz i was/am impressed by him. i do not tend to blow the undeserving trumpet for anyone. GODLY knowledge?---i have never said that. that's your own statement. fine if someone does not agree, am not asking for a favor to agree with me, am i? ignore and rest in peace--that's it! but tell me one thing, why is that we, general nepali, don't like to hear good things about our fellow nepalese?

Here are my nominees: 1. Khagendra Sangraula - His spoken Nepali is hypnotically lush, lyrical and enchanting. I have never heard anyone else speak in such magnificently beautiful Nepali bhasa.I disagree with much of what Sangraula says and writes (too leftist for my taste!), but I adore the way he makes words dance and prance so effortelessly off his tongue. 2. Gopal Siwakoti Chintan - A debater who makes you think hard even when you disagree with the content of his arguments. Very logical, very persuasive, very driven -- it's always stimulating to argue back and forth with him. Whenever I am unsure about a postion on an issue, I try to take an anti-Chintan position just to see how far Chintan will push me on that issue . . . This way, I quickly get the benefit of seeing multiple sides of the issue :-) 3. Pratyoush Onta - One of the clearest thinkers I have ever met in my life. A true academic, Pratyoush thinks in terms of frameworks, and places contexts, events and personalities within frameworks so that his analyses come out not as one-off pieces but as a part of a larger historical narration. I have learnt an immense amount from from his writings, books and ideas. It's always a pleasure to spend time doing guff-suff with him. 4. Kanak Mani Dixit - Kanak is uber-connector, the ultimate global-local Nepali professional. If he were in venture capital/private equity industry, he'd be a one-man Kleiner Perkins firm! Kanak comes up with one idea a minute, and is able to COMMUNICATE many of his ideas to persuade a diverse groups of people to do interesting things. Kathmandu is now South Asia's documentary-film capital, thanks to Kanak's efforts. Kathmandu is also a becoming a leading center for spinal injury treatment, thanks to Kanak's enthusiasm (he almost broke his back in 2002). Nepal has a thriving children's books publication, thanks to Kanak's taking a lead to publish children's books. And the list goes on and on. From Bangladesh to Sri Lanka to the corners of Pakistan (to talk only about South Asia), people who matter know him and only him as one Nepali that they must know! Now, that's influence. A master communicator, indeed. 5. Deepak Gyawali - Love him or hate him, agree with him or disagree with him, Deepak has a knack for convincingly explaining complex/complicated ideas in simple, crystal-clear language. A coffee with Deepak -- increasingly at random airport terminals -- always boosts my IQ by a few points, even when I do not necessarily agree with him on all issues. Always a pleasure to see how his mind plays with ideas and concepts. There are many other Nepalis who I consider to be master communicators -- hence good orators -- maybe I'll write about them some other time. oohi ashu

Here is an interesting anecdote related to the oratory prowess of Madan Bhandari. Nobody I know could have done what Madan Bhandari did on the occasion described. See for yourself. http://www.sajha.com/archives/openthread.cfm?threadid=15565&dsn=sajhaarchive#22590 "...I learnt from them that ML was going to announce its position on Monarchy in the next day’s mass meeting and Madan was the sole speaker for the purpose. One of our subba saheib was of the view that if Madan announce that ML accepts constitutional Monarchy, he would, for sure, invite the same sort of HOOTING Girija once received at the Tundikhel mass meeting. And he also added that most probably, Madan would be kicked out from the party. With this information, I could not resist not attending the mass meeting though I had to HATA my office. As soon as Madan started his speech, clapping started pouring in. Then he set stage for the day’s agenda. And he declare that “if Nepal’s King agrees to respect the sovereignty of Nepalese people and abide the constitution formulated by people’s representatives and is ready to live on the budget allocated by the parliament, CPN-ML has no objection in accepting such a constitutional monarchyâ€. What followed then is complete silence, no usual clapping at all…more silence.. very unusual in a setting of mass meeting. Madan also took long pause. Everyone unsure of what comes next….a Hooting? Then Madan continued (not verbatim) â€Look ! I know it was a difficult moment (to make this announcement) for our party, for me and most importantly for you party cadres and well-wishers. While making this announcement, the most critical fear I had was the possibility of getting applauded for this announcement. Now seeing you so upset and unhappy over this announcement, I am so happy, and proud of your revolutionary spirit. This made me sure that you would not let our party to deviate from our ideals. You would constantly keep oversight and warn party leadership so that it would not fall in the trap of Monarchy. It is your duty to keep close watch how party leadership behaves over this particular agenda"……and so on. Next day, I talked to Subba sahib (one who rejected the idea of accepting Monarchy). His reply was “ Ke garne sir, man ta kahan maneko thiyo ra, tara Madan Bhandari ko bhashan sune pachhi kuro thikai jasto lagyo†The difference between Madan and present leaders is so visisble; Madan was there to lead the crowd and present leaders are there to be led by the crowd!"

I had watched about the life of Mrinendra Rijal in the program named something like "Ek din" in Nepal1 TV. He actually studied science in Ascol, and came from a reputed family. He got arrested during demonstrations and fightings from Ascol. I think that he started studying hard only later, and in fact he even was restricted from Ascol. So, he changed the track and joined management instead. He topped the university, and came to USA. He also swept away all 'A's and I remember him saying happily about his name being printed in wallstreet journal at that time. Then, he got a chance to do ph.d. and then an offer for assistant professor. Only during deuba's visit while being PM, he requested him to come back, and made his advisor (PM's advisor). So Deuba contributed for his return. He besides working as a politician, also teaches and owns Ace institute of Management, and his wife also teaches there. He actually logs onto msn messenger as I saw in that documentary. The documentary was good, and it gave me a good impression of him. Just one thing, I didn't like about was the boasting of his salary at US. I know that is the truth. But there'll always be criticism. Anyway, it's good that he's contributing to nepalese society now.

A spoiler of a sort. Here are some comments by an unimpressed viewer of Deuba's speech (probably written by Mrinendra Rijal-jee) delivered at Columbia University Nepal Conference some time before Jana Andolan II (on March 22, 2006). The comment is lifted from Nepal Democracy Forum (nepaldemocracy google group) From: ... To: nepaldemocracy@googlegroups.com Date: Sat, 25 Mar 2006 13:01:27 -0800 Subject: Re: Columbia U. Conference: Declaration, Speech etc... Deuba's speech, whoever wrote it to represent Deuba, has absolutely no sense of the crisis we are in, absolutely no sense of responsibility and guilt about it, terribly dishonest self-defense, no soul-searching and vision, guts to falsify facts and, most disappointing of all-- to those who might have expected Deuba committing to "Ceremonial monarchy"-- that he blew the hope. Deuba's first 3500 words (that is 93% of the total) are used to avoid taking responsibility to his failures, blaming others and stealing credit to "bikas" that happened during democracy. Only towards the end, he hurriedly throws two one liners (total 72 words, that is 2% of the total) that says he will "increase" internal democracy and "include clear statements concerning the past weaknesses of democratic governments in Nepal and.... political priorities for the future democratic government of the country..". Never mind. These are positive commitments. However, by not committing to "Ceremonial monarchy", Deuba disappointed the proponents of CM, I suppose. On CM, Deuba's words were: ".. The king must return to the role prescribed by the Constitution before dialogue. In fact the call of the youth for only a ceremonial role has been to be seriously discussed.." He recommends a serious discussion on CM, but expresses no commitment. The above statement of Deuba is also where I was referring to his guts to falsify facts. Our youth are calling for a "democratic republic", not "ceremonial monarchy". Almost 95 % college students voted for "republic democracy" in 2004 "mini-referendum". Just completed elections of campus student unions demonstrated the same trend and same call. Can somebody ask Dr. Mrinendra Rijal-jyu where Deuba got the data about "ceremonial monarchy" and guts to falsify what our youth are committed to ? Phataha kura gardai hidne, yaar ? (just imitating Deuba) ... ... ____
