Foreign language in parliament Kathmandu , 30 May: When Sadhbhawana (Ananddevi) party’s Hridayesh Tripathi addressed the parliament in Hindi language on 16 May in the parliamentary session, people have expressed dissatisfaction on him, writes Dibya Chakshu weekly. Tripathi has challenged the constitution of 1990 as well as the parliamentary announcement of 2006 by using a foreign lingo while addressing the parliament, even the Speaker of the parliament Subash Nembang did not bother to stop Tripathi speaking from foreign language. Instead of using one’s mother tongue, if one is allowed to use a foreign language at a place like parliament, which represents the nation as a whole then why do not the speaker of the parliament rule the house in his native language? People’s News/KDB IS OUR NATIONALITY AND NATIONAL UNITY IN QUESTION ?

hahaha if english becomes the official language majority of the parliamentarians will not be able to speak. If you hear them speak, you will have a hard time understanding what they are saying .... hahahha !

lalupari you said they speak 2 languages in the Canadian parliament. So there are 2 official language for the parliament right??? Can anyone speak in Spanish or hindi too if they are of any of that origin??? Do you agree now that there has to be an official language and people cannot just speak in whatever language they prefer rampantly without considering any code of conduct. Do you understand that???

Amrita joshi Ji ... This is what I am saying, malai pani Nepali bahek aaru kehi nabolos jasto lagcha ... tara if we advocate freedom of religion why not freedom of languages. NO you are right in Canada you can only speak English and French, however the parliament in Canada has been around for a long long time... the rules are well established. But in Nepal Parliament is new and why not allow choice of language and see what comes of it. To be frank with you ... I do not watch Hindi movies or listen to hindi songs (except bhajans because my parents like it). If I had my say and I was the dictator I would make Nepali a national language and that's that!! But to claim democracy and not allow for democratic rights or democratic experimentation ... well!!

hey pari jee It's not choice of language.. it's the code of conduct. If there are 2 official language in Canadian parliament that is their code of conduct ie they are not allowed to speak any other language except those 2. Do you understand Ms or Mr thick skull ? In every parliament there is a code of conduct. Be it in India or Pakistan or in the US. If there is a senator of Indian origin - do you think he will go and speak in Hindi ??? There should be descipline in every democracy w/o which no democracy can flourish.

You need to get off a fantasy cloud and come down to reality... we are talking about Nepal here where people become billionaire 10 years after getting into the parliament on the salary they receive (yeah right)... and you talk about code of conduct for thease people.

Lalpari what has them being billionare in 10 yrs got to do with what Amrit Joshi is trying to say?? Those are two completely different issues and voices against them should be raised separately(atleast for now)... Let's not merge them at the moment... Tripathi should have spoken in the mother language.... As much as a lot of people hate it, here's the truth, "Nepali" is still *the national language* and until a subsitute is provided, "nepali" is the language that he or anybody in his position has to deal with... Now if he was uncomfortable speaking in Nepali(though that's not the case with him), he could have chosen his mother tongue which could be Maithili, Bhojpuri or even Kusunda.... But Hindi??? That's preposterous, but an important *hint* that he is suffering from "identity crisis".... And with such a feeble mind that takes no pride in our individuality, he has no right to be where he is nor represent our nation and its people...

Mokshya ji the only reason I mentioned the "money" thing is to outline the fact that how can we expect netas like that to work within the code of conduct. As far as they are concerned the code of conduct is not worth the "foreign" paper that they are written on. So let's not be naive and expect one person under one aspect to follow the parliamentary code of conduct while other netas are blindly breaking code of conducts every breathing moments of their lives (not all of them, most of them). I know when it comes to "HINDI" we Nepalis (as opposed to Nepalese) are very touchy. We prefer English, French, even German but we don't accept Hindi. I am the same way. However, If I am to guess, iin Nepal most people understand TWO languages universally (as universally as it can be in Nepal) are: Number 1 Nepali and Number 2 Hindi. So why can't we just be humble about it and accept that? Afterall we just accepted a road that will lead us to eventual destruction of Nepal as we know it!! The animals named BabuRam and PushkarKamal are more equal than the rest of us!!! That will be the "paatth" that will be taught to our grandchildren not too far in the future.
