I've got a problem with my computer. It's like when I turn on, the windowsXP starts loading for a second and stops and restarts itself and then the same thing repeats.
It doesn't restart when I load BIOS but yes it restarts when windowsXP starts loading, now does that mean I can never get my computer turned on unless I repair or what?
[when I turn the computer on it says " We apologize for the inconvinience, windows did not start normally" and it shows the boot options and I tried all of them but it's the same thing, keeps restarting itself but I can only get to the BIOS mode and I don't think I have installed any hardware or software reecently, last time it worked normally, I turned it off and I tried turning it on after an hour or so and that happened]

Any help would be appreciated.

If your filesystem is corrupt, you'll most likely lose your data regardless. But if it's not, then using the "Repair" option (after haivng booted from the XP Install Disk) should leave your personal files alone... So using the "Repair" option should be the recommended way to go.

Using linux bootloaders and other hacks are adhoc methods and unless you're an advanced user, that path may be counter-productive.

well i think your CD drive is loading first..and your hard drive loads, tries to find bootdisk and since there's nothing, computer just sits blank!
i hope you know how to go to BIOS. restart, when you see your computer logo, whether "compaq" dell or anything, hit F10, repeatedly...go into bios, and make the CD drive load first, then harddisk.

pop in your XP cd, restart your computer, and hit any key when it asks
hit any key to boot from CD....

then if you don't want to lose your data, install XP on top of what you have, without formatting. windows will notify that there is already a copy of windows in your drive, continue anyway.
OR you can repair by going to windows repair from CD.

i suspect the NIC is not automatically brought up properly which is one of the most common issues in even the most seasoned distros.

so lets diagnose with the do-all network command,

$>ifconfig

which is the windows equivalent of 'ipconfig' but more.

each NIC is called eth0, eth1, eth2...

if none seems to have been assigned with a valid IP address,

$>ifconfig eth0 up

should do (it works although the NIC is not enabled at start up).

also, the results of
$>dhcpd

should be interesting.

Here's the "Boot Device Priority" list:
1st Boot Device [SM-HL-DT-ST DVDRAM]
2nd Boot Device [PM-Maxtor 6YO4OLO]
3rd Booy Device [1st FLOPPY DRIVE]
4th Booy Device [INTEL UNOI, PXE -2].

1st Boot Device [SM-HL-DT-ST DVDRAM]
2nd Boot Device [PM-Maxtor 6YO4OLO]

according to this, your DVD drive is the first bood device, then your maxtor HD...which means your cd should run before HD...first put your cd in then turn off, then restart. and see if it asks for you to hit any key...
