What is it that keeps Nepalese from returning to Nepal? I have yet to understand.
Is it our misguided priorities in life?
I have witnessed many Nepalese students who have come to US from a middle class, upper middle class or higher class families who can very well live in Nepal with what their family own, or very well find a job if not in Nepal, in neighboring countries. But we would rather stay here in US no matter what and how we live our lives. What is it that drives us to situation where we are willing to sacrifice our loved ones back home, willing to live disorderly and lonely lifestyles here in US, and willing to work in situation risking our lives? In many cases we could very well, go back after finishing up our education, but we do not. We would rather enjoy spending Saturday afternoon and lunch with our relatives and family than trying to either recover from Friday night hangovers, or getting geared up to start a busy work schedule.
Is it the independent lifestyle, money, career, pride that keeps us here even though our aging parents are back home? What is it? Have we gotten our priorities in life messed up?

From my personal experience, I have a lot of Bhutanese friends but they all seem to go back to Bhutan once they are done here in the States with their education. I find it quite contrasting with our way.

If Nepal had a stable government and robust economy then maybe ppl will go back more. But currently there seem to be nothing to go back to except for your family and frens. People need job security, economic stability, and a flourishing art and entertainment community etc etc to keep them from going elsewhere. If Nepal cannot provide that than....of course ppl are going to go elsewhere.

I wonder if you guys out there who have settled in the US think that it is the a condusive environment for raising kids ?? The other day, my flatmate, a Malaysian was telling me UK is not a good place for raising kids due to many factors.

Interesting topic. Someone should do a PhD on this issue. I guess a lot of Nepalese people have the "Nomadic Mentality"....:) For a long time people from villages in Nepal have left their villages & families to join Indian army, British army, Singapore police, Brunei etc. After they retire & come back to Nepal, some of them go back again to India, Middle East, Hong Kong, Cruise Ships etc to look for jobs cause it's better pay then Nepal. Then children of Gurkha's who were born in Hong Kong started flockin to HKG to work during the 90s. Money talks!

During the 80s there was a huge rise in sending the kids to study in India. Then came the 90s which saw a tremendous increase in Nepalese going to USA & Australia for further education. Also people on tourist visas that stayed here. Then came the movement of Nepalese man-power going to Middle East, Malaysia, Korea etc. I guess Nepalese people want something BETTER....they want to reach higher....they want to reach the top of Sagarmatha....:) Nothing wrong in seeking a better life. It's an independent choice which we are free to make. The Europeans flocked to US to escape religious persecution, poverty & their govt. I guess we flock to foreign lands to seek better education, better $$$$, escape frustrations, jobs etc.

Nepalese people are making a huge SACRIFICE. They have sacrificed their lives to protect Nepal from foreign powers, they have sacrificed their lives for the British and they do not get scared to wander off to foreign lands seeking better life, education & good fortune leaving their families back home.

The bottom line is what is important to you in your life. What makes you happy? What are your priorities? I guess this answer will be unique for each one of us.

One thing I have never understood is "Why are we like Bheda- Bhakra?" I mean it's like "Nepalese are going to US"....so everyone tries to go there, Russia and then many flocked over therePhilippines...Bangladesh, Pakistan.U name it! Carpet factory.....people left & right were opening carpet factories, Pashmina business..and then same thing again....garments...and then people started opening garments like mushrooms....handicrafts business and Lokta factories everywhere....and then students who came to US..."Computers...enroll in Computer Science...or some computer degree...why....because there is future & dinero....easy to find job....although that person might not have interest in Computers at all....open a gas station...why...because that Ful Kanchi is making tons of money...oh no...Nepali restaurant...why...cause Saihila is making tons of dough...no no Daycare.....it's easy money...:) I guess we are trying to climb the higher branches of the Money Tree...which I don't see anything wrong with trying to make more money. But why do we act like Bheda-Bhakra? Can someone with more knowledge please enlighten me? My thoughts on this are maybe we have some kind of Nomadic Bheda-Bhakra gene within us....Peace.
