Dear RG,

That's the problem you were addressing. Your Thread needed the answer, WHY ?
Among the different issues I mentioned above, the fourth one, the NEGATIVE EMOTION should be the one that distracts parents making them to think out of the box. Because of the language problem, they have lots of problems with fellow KHAIRES, which they dont' want to repeat with their kids.

But, a kid who grows up in USA will easily adopt american culture. Parents dont need to worry about that instead they should teach them Nepali Culture as well as other family values. They should understand why America is LAND OF OPPORTUNIY? Why America holds the diversity-concept? Why America is America? Sadly, We have forgotten or haven't understood the fact. So,Parents fail to teach their kids the culture.

I mentioned ECONOMICAL issues above because if a family has a good source of income they could socialize. Example, Indians - both husband/wife earns loads of money. Most of them are business people. In our case, according to my observations, few nepali couple hold such status in USA. If a family has low income, definitely they won't be able to socialize adequately, since they have to work long hours to hold the family.
Also I have seen,Nepali families spending their free time drinking & partying than needed. That gives just the headaches and hangover. Indians families, when parting, talk about promoting business, teaching culture to their kids. At least they try. In our case, during parties, I have observed, Nepali parents, letting their under age kids to watch RATED- R movies and parents drowned into the pleasure of LIQUORS. These factors have to do a lot why U.S born kids are not into Nepali culture. It's not a kid but the parent who is not or not willing to provide the culture. Most importantly, we all should be thinking about these issues beforehand. For that we should understand:

-Why America? - eg. diversity - opportunities that could be grabbed here.
-What Am I doing to improve my life quality?
-Am I doing the right thing?

Always need to analyze and self monitor one self. HUSBAND/WIFE must be good friends and very cooperative to each other so to move up the ladder of success. They should rememeber driniking beers and whisky doesn't mean the form of socialization or modernization. The action of parents impact on KIDS. Therefore, it's the job of those respective parents to mold the culture of their kid properly.

It was a nice topic to discuss about. This response of mine is getting longer; a book could be written in this topic. So I would like to say Thank You RG for bringing the issue.

जसलाई जे मन पर्छ बोलुन्, after all this is a free world. म पनि त दुइटै भाषा बोल्छु, कहिले अंग्रेजी नेपाली accent मा, कहिले नेपाली english accent मा। Every language has beauty in its own place. I love Nepali and am more comfortable with it because I have spent two decades in Nepal. तर अरूलाई अंग्रेजी बोल्दा बढी आराम हुन्छ भने उनीहरूले बोल्न पाउनुपर्छ, no one can interfere in others freedom,'freedom of speech'.

I think there is a very good reason for Nepali kids who are born here/brought here as a kid to not speak nepali. I have a cousin who was born here.. and she is about 7 now. She speaks only english too. The reason is- when she was a kid my uncle taught her how to speak in Nepali. During her pre-school and school times, she would sometimes talk in nepali. It was very hard for the teachers to communicate. Sometimes they had to call my uncle/aunt because of the communication gap. Due to this reason my uncle/aunt had to make her speak in english all the time. (Once she wanted to go to the bathroom and kept on saying 'susu ayo' and crying and no one could get it.. was a mess!!)

Another reason might be due to social group. When I was 7, I came to the USA for the first time. My parents wanted us to talk to our mom in english so that she might improve her accent, but we would completely refuse. We never spoke anything else than Nepali. I stayed in USA for 2 years and my Nepali was already poor by the end. I DID speak Nepali but the reason I could not retain it as good was bacause I had no nepali friends. I would speak english in school, with my friend, with my playmates and neighbours after school! There would hardly be time to speak the nepali language. So I was more comfortable with english BUT that changed when I went back to nepal.

And for spanish kids to speak spanish... Well that language is like the second language in USA. Almost everyone speaks or atleast majority understand it. So they have it easy!!

The best place to preserve Nepali language is "Nepal" and NOT outside of Nepal.

I dont see there should be such a big fuss about the language thing. Its of course a good thing to know as many languages as possible for everyone.

For the Nepali people who are born and/or brought up in US, all I can say is you don't have to be ahamed or feel bad about not knowing how to talk in Nepali. Languages are not that hard to learn especially when you have a passion to learn. So I would suggest them to try to learn nepali, at least try to speak in nepali with parents or whoever who knows nepali at home and in the neighborhood.

The very fundamental nature of culture is that it is "EVERCHANGING".

So basically are you guys are trying to reverse or stop the very fundamental nature of reality from functioning ?

A person will choose the language that is most suitable, most convenient and the one that has the highest value in his/her surroundings. The value of Nepali language tumbles to the bottom as soon as you leave Nepal.

If Nepali language were widely spoken around the world like English or French, then the case would have been different.

Try speaking Nepali at a your school or at your work or at malls/stores and if you get anything out of it plz let me know.

I would like to point out couple things I have observed here in US. I totally agree with Bhangli Damini
"Among the different issues I mentioned above, the fourth one, the NEGATIVE EMOTION should be the one that distracts parents making them to think out of the box. Because of the language problem, they have lots of problems with fellow KHAIRES, which they dont' want to repeat with their kids".
This is very true and I have observed this in the community I live too. I don't have kids but in the 10 years of living in US, I have noticed that the parents who has sound educational background tend to teach their kids Nepali language than the parents who do not have one. I'm not trying to make a biased judgement but People who came to US as any other means that the students (tourist, family sponsored, DV etc) seem to have problems communicating here with Americans and want their kids to speak Nepali.
I also agree with Rythm that not having enough time to speak in Nepali makes it difficult for kids (like you went through when you were 7) to remember it when they speak english for hours. But lately, I have seen the increase in the families moving to US and the students here getting married and having kids.. so the population is rising and the kids will have chance to socialize so I don't think we really need to worry about preserving nepali language as long as parents are willing to save it.
Last but not the least, I saw few people making comment as it is not nescessary to preserve Nepali language in USA, I have a question for you folks....
How will your kids interact with their grand parents or great grandparents (given that they don't understand or speak english)? If you don't give a damn about your parents and their interactions with their lovely little grandkids and have a precious time, then I don't have a say.

One good news to you Rockon Gal is that I've seen some Nepali communities in US and Canada have started Kids Program where kids meet every once a week or two weeks. They meet with fellow Nepali (origin) kids and learn to read and write Nepali language. They also learn nepali dances, songs etc. This is a very good way of keeping kids interested in learning and make it fun for them as they get chance to make friends and we can preserve the lNepali language to some extent.

Correction to my post above: (on the second paragraph.. last sentence)), it should have been:

I'm not trying to make a biased judgement but People who came to US as any other means than the students (tourist, family sponsored, DV etc) seem to have problems communicating here with Americans and want their kids to speak English.

Whoever commented above that the Kids born here or came here to US in a very early age do not need to know nepali, I had asked you folks a question and still have not heard from you:
How will your kids interact with their grand parents or great grandparents (given that they don't understand or speak english)?
