Well salokya should give the reference when he copies the comment from the sajha. Next thing is he is a journalist, he might have own style. Well, if he hide the identity and publish the story, I think tht is valid. The major issue tht people are discussing is ' if they swapping group doesnt harm outsiders ' thts ok. NO THT IS NOT OK. If something unsocial goes on, there is the law to bind them. IF ONE GUY IS READY TO DIE AND NEXT IS READY TO KILL AND IF THEY DONT HARM OTHERS, IT IS NOT OK.

Salokyaji,

The general norm is irrespective of where you are, you should let the interviewee know whether you are going to publish/broadcast all or part of your conversation beforehand. You are not supposed to publish materials that are defamatory without the explicit approval of the person concerned, although the information you hold are genuine.

nepalean, you are way off in your logic. In your example, if someone is dying, that means someone is getting hurt. Here we are talking about people pleasuring themselves.

People in this thread have mentioned that if something happens that is out of ordinary, then it should be reported. So if a couple has sex before marriage, should that be reported as well? In a conservative society of ours filled with bunch of narrow-minded educated fools, it should be not quite ordinary, right?

hurray dude from your sight of view my logic might be offset but my logic states if two people agree to do something within themselves and it has some sort of impact to the society, their activity is not out of concern. Law may be required to analyze that activity. Dont relate this logic with hurt, pain etc etc

code of ethics

Test the accuracy of information from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error.
Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing.
Identify sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.
Always question sources? motives before promising anonymity. Clarify conditions attached to any promise made in exchange for information. Keep promises.
Make certain that headlines, news teases and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.
Never distort the content of news photos or video. Image enhancement for technical clarity is always permissible. Label montages and photo illustrations.
Avoid misleading re-enactments or staged news events. If re-enactment is necessary to tell a story, label it.
Avoid undercover or other surreptitious methods of gathering information except when traditional open methods will not yield information vital to the public. Use of such methods should be explained as part of the story
Never plagiarize.
Tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience boldly, even when it is unpopular to do so.
Examine their own cultural values and avoid imposing those values on others.
Avoid stereotyping by race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or social status.
Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant.
Give voice to the voiceless; official and unofficial sources of information can be equally valid.
Distinguish between advocacy and news reporting. Analysis and commentary should be labeled and not misrepresent fact or context.
Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.
Recognize a special obligation to ensure that the public's business is conducted in the open and that government records are open to inspection.

Where did saloky overlook journalism code of conduct ? i don't see any mistake from him. if privacy is the big deal then why is Michael Jackson on trial for child molestation ? Doesn?t his privacy should be respected?

In 2003 in Montreal, Canada a judge ruled that swingers' clubs, which allow strangers to engage in group sex, are not illegal as long as the fun takes place behind closed doors.

Salokya, nice work w/man, don't be preturbed by accusations, face them defend them with logic and proof (of course). You must be proud that there are many who read your work and actually coment on it. Chalanges from likes of Ashu, should be a motivation to do better and convience them with works to come. If not, who has been able to please everyone, as long as you enjoy, keep going. Take back your decision to quit Sajha forume (if it was serious enough), for running away will only make you look like a looser.
All the best for your efforts, and do bring diverse topics to enlighten us with facts and features happening around us.

These so called journalists were responsible for the suicide of Srisa Karki not too long ago. What Salokya is trying to do by peeping in other's private affairs? Another suicide by Jharana?? Anyway, that is not responsible journalism...

In the interest of entertainment and hopefully some edification, please consider these nuggest of verifiably true information:

a) Salokya writes that these spouse-swappers are all right "किनकि उनीहरुले कुनै अपराध गरेका छैनन् ।

OK.

[But, if the Rajya or the State finds out about them, it could potentially cite Muluki Ain's Karani Mahal to slap them with lawsuits to put them behind bars! But I digress]

b) Then he defends his writing about them and his posting their Web pages so on, thereby violating their right to be left alone by loftily setting himself up as some moral guardian. He preaches: "असामाजिक काम गर्न अधिकारको कुरा खोज्नु उपयुक्त हुँदैन".

My question: In other words, Salokya has already decided that what these people are into is, ahem, "असामाजिक काम". But who gave Salokya this right to publicly decide what is सामाजिक and what is असामाजिक?

Isn't his type of thinking that led to the suicide of young Sreesa Karki two years ago? Isn't his broadly the type of statement the present government asks of people who it considers to be doing "असामाजिक काम", howsoever defined? If so, under the veneer of progressivism, how different is Salokya from that of any Panchayati stalwart? [And, if I may add, it breaks my heart to think that this is the sort of journalists who are pressing for press freedoms in Nepal! Good luck!!]

c) Salokya brings up Michael Jackson and Britney Spears ko kura to justify his action. But he REPEATEDLY fails to understand that these people about which blog entries are about are UTTER private citizens and NOT public figures by any stretch of imagination. Rules that apply to PUBLIC figures in media are different from the rules that apply to private citizens.

d) Salokya even needs to be TOLD by others to even (gasp, choke!) credit the sources of comments that he posts on his blog. Even then, he comes up with lame excuses. Whoever has heard of a journalist who needs to be told the basic rule of citation?

e) When all else fails, instead of criticizing my comments so that there is an exchange of views and thoughts,, he responds with an accusation: "मलाई पनि शंका लागेको छ कतै तपाईँ त्यही क्लबको सदस्य त हुनुहुन्न ।"

I mean, see what I mean?
Look at his attempt to put me on the defensive.

Fortunately, his gambit is not going to work on me. Since most people know me on Sajha, I can offer two answers: First, I am not a member. Second -- and this is my main point -- EVEN IF I WERE, it would be none of Salokya's business, unless I were
some public figure (which I am not at this moment!).

ON A GENERAL NOTE, most of us young Nepalis who aspire to some public (elected or unelected) offices in Nepal in future -- we have start mastering how to deal honestly and skillfully with the members of the Nepali press, which is, with a few exceptions, composed entirely of young turks like Salokya who are high on enthusiasm and low on thoughts. This is the crowd we have in Nepal -- for better or worse -- to deal with. The more we know about this, the better it is to deal with them.

And so, the words of Himal Media's Basanta Thapa, "Most of our journalists are over-trained and underskilled", and I can't think of a finer representative of that species
than Salokya.

Salokya, keep your blog swinging (no pun intended, of course!)

Salokya,

By now, you might be familiar with many faces in Sajha. Contributing in it requires prepreparedness for the criticisms than expecting aspirations and suggestions. Whether you (we) are doing right or wrong does not matter in Sajha. Here are always some people who never like to give credits to others.

Some people are a big show off. "Aasu" is a perfect example for this. He does not want to praise others' works---but wants to show off himself. He expects from others--but does not want to offer the same thing. For him, others know nothing. I am seeing his writings since the last 2 months and I am already fed up with his way to treat others. It is better to ignore such guys because it won't be any useful to listen them or argue with them.

Some people are so sensitive on the subject matter that--- if they feel the subject matter not of their (private?) interests--- they start attacking. 'Newuser' may be an example of a sensitive man. He is the man of analysis and writes nice stuffs, whether it be political, economical, general analysis or even stories--- but sometimes (I have to say rarely)--- he writes in such a way that his body temperature has already over 100 degrees.

These are JUST some examples. There are many more varieties in Sajha.

As a reader than a writer, I am unable to distinguish Salokya's writings because of my limited knowledge on Journalists' code of conducts. He has done a hard work and even in an interesting issue--- though private--- has an influential social impacts on societal structure. In my personal view, Salokya's way of expression is little bit beyond the boundaries in the sense of exposing private matters and abusing 'The manager' , but NOT as a self-claimed superior man like "Aasu" criticized. Salokya, be careful not to abuse the actors of your story. My suggestion is to contact the manager and get his pre-permission to publish further. Don't STOP your work due to the critics of some Sajha visitors like "Aasu" but be sure not to go beyond your boundary.

Thank you Future Nepal for correcting the spelling of my name.

*****

That said, I have NEVER understood, how some of us Nepalis expect to be in a public
forum anywhere if we do NOT tolerate or at least allow room for free and frank -- if occasionally sharp and pungent -- exchange of words that are based on ideas (such
as, in this case, privacy rights, and so on).

Maybe we would like to exist in an echo chamber, where anything and everything we say is echoed back to us, with an approving chorus. If other people challege our thoughts and actions, maybe it's safer to sulk and pout -- and leave the place altogether, stamping our feet.

I really don't know.

I'd be the first to say that the issues I have raised here are NOT clear-cut and decided in advance for sure. These are basically rough drafts of certain thoughts --challenges to which I, for one, would always welcome, without taking things personally so that the counter-ideas would force to me think harder and deeper about these issues. Tetti ho.

Salokya ji,
Though a little late to comment and not interested in those kind of acts(when I will get married), I would like to coment on some of your shortcomings as perceived by me.

Firstly, you said:-
I think privacy is not limited to revealing the personal data, telephone no., email address, etc.. But it can be photographic data as well. When you published the screenshots of the websites on the first day, I was thinking you should have blurred the faces or put black stripes in the eyes of the people in it, as you said you respected their privacy. Nevertheless, the images were too small, only an expert detective would have recognized them in real life. So, I didn't find it necessay to say anything on that. On the second day, you published the image of the particular lady, which you said the manager asked you to remove. The face in that picture is quite clear, which violates the privacy you are talking about. There are not only personal data like name, moblie no. etc, which are private, but photographic data are also meant to be private.

I thought you were behaving ethically when I saw your posting that you instantly removed the photo after you received the request from the manager. But even now when I open that page, that photo is still there. It may be a technical fault on your part not to be able to remove that image, but it is, I think, breaching privacy. Hope you will recheck it and make sure you are maintaining your promise of protecting privacy.

Secondly, you said on ashu:-
This is a laughable comment, atleast for long time Sajha visitors, because ashu is a almost a public figure. Anyway, as ashu has already commented on this, and could provide you his identity if you want, I don't have to go further.

Thirdly, you have already admitted that you used Sajha for popularizing your blog. Your site experienced the highest no. of visitors on 6th June (1189) when you published that report for the first time. I don't know where else did you advertise your blog site, but Sajha surely contributed lot of visitors. But your decision to quit Sajha may prove to be a regressive decision for you. Even more, we will lose a rising journalist as a Sajha member. So, I request you to remain in sajha and keep on giving new information, meanwhile improving your journalism by maintaining others privacy more perfectly in the future.

Salokya,

You copied and pasted my comments from Sajha.com on your own blog.
I said: That was fine.

What was and is NOT fine is your bizarre refusal to give any credit to Sajha.com
on your blog as the source of those comments. Your saying that a request to credit sources must come to you from San, the admin, and not from others is strange, to say the least. Even as of this moment, you have NOT credited Sajha.com.

Sure, as per your accusation, I may NOT know anything about "blogging journalism".
But your own simple refusal to give credit where it's due tells me that you don't
know much about journalism -- blogging or otherwise -- either.

On a larger note, if you and I are to disagree EVEN on this straightforward "credit the source" issue, then, it's clear that it's useless for us to engage in further kura-kani.

Other than that, feel free to talk to your editors/publishers and others seniors in your profession. Chances are they all know me by name, and -- guess what -- I am NOT even a journalist. Let that serve as my very puiblic introduction to you.

"Every one knows me" ... I am the great Ashu. And guess what Salokya if you are not going to do what I say 'MA TA SITA BOLDINA ... KATTI TA SITA!"

Just a few observation. And Sajha lai credit diyo nadiyo tapailai ke ko tauko dukhaya ... unless you have a hidden financial interest in Sajha... afterall you did live in Boston during your prime!!!

Salokya ji,
Yes,I just checked it and now the image is definitely removed.
Keep on blogging, I like your bloggs!!

Salokya ji
