It's too much now and so I decided to start this thread on cartoons of Rajesh K.C. published in both Kantipur daily and Kathmandu Post.

That's the stupidity not to be correctly translated the nepali version into english sensibly.

Who cares about the translation? When everyone can read Nepali.

There are two types of criticism. Positive and Negative.

When you get negative criticism, you are supposed to acknowledge and then improve. But we nepalese have a tendency to ignore ay criticisms that come hitting us.

I am not criticizing the Cartoonists, I am criticizing the publishers... The enpali cartoons are great, and the uses of THET Nepali words have striking effect. But it doesn't mean that same writer of the dialogue can also efficiently write in english. The Kathmandu Post is not willing to pay extra money, and trying to use the same cartoon from Kantipur. Why can't they simply pay another cartoonist who writes in engluish, if there's one. If there isn't one, translation is fine. But why stinginess in paying someone who has good command in english to have the nepali cartoon translated !!

CRITICIZE ta garna paunu paryo ni, kaso saathiharu?

CRITICIZE garyo bhanaera ignore ta garnu bhayena ni. For example, Pushkar Shah was pretty badly criticized here in sajha kurakani. Accordingly Pushkar Shah has taken positive steps, became more careful, understood what public relation is, and not how to upset public. And not how to present overestimated goals... he is now very careful. Learn from Pushkar, the way he corrected his mistakes.

The English translations somehow do not convey the strong meaning like nepali does.

If Mr. KC himself, is doing the translations, he should seek for some one who is more proficient in English. If someone is doing Mr. KC translations, probably he should do it himself so that he can add feelings to his intelligent creations.

For e.g. (BTW I am also not a proficient in English).

The Original version in the last cartoon:

"The notes are genuine. I am signing them as the governor is yet to be appointed."

Structurally, I think, the sentence is not really flawed but does not convey the exact meaning (depending upon where you pause). A simple comma after "them" would have made it sound lot clearer. Why, in English version, have they failed to use some punctuation marks, like in Nepali?

1.The notes are genuine. I am signing them as the governor is yet to be appointed.
(original).

2. The notes are genuine. I am signing them as the governor, is yet to be appointed.
(pause after governor).

3. The notes are genuine. I am signing them , as the governor is yet to be appointed.
(pause after "them")

but what about this:

"I have signed the notes (more appropriately "bills") to make them genuine , as the governor has NOT yet been appointed ."

or "To make them genuine, I have signed the notes (more appropriately "bills") , as the governor has NOT yet been appointed."

I am making it sound more negative because of the action of appointing governor could not take place and this event needs to be emphasized in the sentence.

I never thought of this before Prem dai brought it up.

By the way, I feel the cartoonists are one of the most intelligent and creative.

Keep the good work Rajesh KC but do consider what the people have said here

Somewhat OK here. But still tranlsation failed to write which Ministry? Must have been explicity "Ministry for Information".

And the last sentence should be "Now, Should I go and buy another one by myself?"

I think it's Suchana tatha Prabidhi Mantralaya = Ministry for Information and Technology.

I have been watching news topics at Kantipuronline, and again and again they are writing something like this:

Maoists shoot dead policeman

It might makes one wonder, Are Maoists shooting the already dead policemen?

"shoot" ?

I think the line might be correct if written:

Maoists shot policeman dead.

OR

Policeman shot dead by Maoists

prem_dai, why are you being so fussy about these cartoons? If you want the exact word-to-word translation, the cartoon will be full of words.. and no place for the drawing. If that's what you want, then let me tell you that's not what most of the readers want.
the primary focus should be how to convey the humor.. not the language..
regarding the grammatical mistakes in kantipuronline, I agree with you. I think you should write to them directly.

Writing to Kantipuronline directly.. well already DONE!!!.. They will sit there as if they never received.

That's why we need sajha forum.

Never below par. We must concentrate on finsihing touch as well. We know no one can be perfect, but at least we should try.

I support Prem dai to point out the errors so the quality of Rajesh KC can be upgraded. I admire that guy a lot and sometimes in the English section, the translations do not make that much of sense.

e.g.

"See! This new computer also has our old website. Who bought it? I think I should do the purchasing myself."

Does not it mean, there is a new website but this computer is still showing the same old one? It us a result of direct translation from Nepali which distorted the meaning or "aasaya". The proof of ignorance, a new computer will have their new website is not conveyed well, if you did not read the Nepali one first.

What about this simple statement:

I think, I should go myself to buy a new computer with our new website.
(Does not this simple sentence reveal their foolishness?)

Or,

Who bought this new computer with the same old website? I think, I should do the purchasing myself.

Here's today's cartoons. The problem in the traslation is that the most important humor part has been neglected whic is the "Odourless situation" !!!

Well, I have been noticing this discrepencies for past several months, and in so many ocassions Kantipuronline and Rajesh KC has been notified. BUt the quality never changed. They are, in number of ocassions, tried to create entirely a new cartoon in english using the same drawings from nepali version. Well, I can understand they are saving some bucks ustilizing the same drawings for both Nepali and English dailies, which saves a lot of money actually not having to pay some other english cartoonists.

But since they are using the same drawing, everyday, if they cannot translate properly, how can one expect totally different humors in english and nepali cartoons? Drawings are same, so should be the humor, isn't it?

Yes, the most humorous part in nepali version is " Tei ta, Kina Ganayena Bhanchhu". I agree with Prem Dai, this part has been neglected in teh english version.

I do not know this Rajesh KC, who creates such appropriate cartoons everyday.
I can imagine him (also other cartoonists), reading newspapers a lot, to get proper material and context and on his mind he must be like a women in labor, trying hard to deliver.

He must be thinking hard all the time, to produce few strokes of lines and a punch line, when eating, driving his car or even spending quality time with his spouse. I don't think it's a cake walk for him to be that creative. To put such complex issues in a simple drawing and few words really needs some talent.

As, has been pointed out, the english translation degardes his quality work.

If TKP does not listen, its them and Mr. KC who lose. I enjoy the Nepali version anyway!

Pretty close translation.. but unfortunately, yet again the satirical part has been missed...

"We'll quit this govornment" is not same as "Yestei ho bhane Sarkar Chhadinchha"

Saying "We will quit" expresses CERTAINTY of leaving the govt. But the Nepali cartoon indicates otherwise (indicating the threatening to leave the government for miniscule reasons, but not really doing so).

Yes, the english cartoon sounds quite a separate one, but the cartoonist meant something different in context of current political situation in Nepal in his original nepali cartoon.
