I recently watched Ramanand Sagar's 1986 rendition of the epic Ramayana. There is one scene where Ram sings a lovely bhajan eulogizing Mahadev on the night of ShivaRatri. I don't recall the entire bhajan but here is what I can remember:

Nis-saar is sansar mey shiva naam hee ik saar hai
Shiva shakti hai Shiva bhakti hai
Shiva mukti ka adaar hai
Sheesh ganga bhasma anga
Hey natarajan namoh namah

Bhajan is not my cup of tea. For God's sake, I am an atheist. However, I can not get enough of the following Bhajan, written by Nida Fazli and sung by Jagjit Singh.

In other thread, ( - http://www.sajha.com/sajha/html/openthread.cfm?forum=2&ThreadID=18097&show=all#99927 ) I was talking about a perfect song- one that lifts you up to a higher plane, one that does not have a single dull moment, one that sounds fresh every time you listen to. That kind of song.

And this is one of those kind of songs for me.

And Bhajan, yes, this is one of those rare bhajans that is for everybody- Hindu, Musalmans, Khristanis, Aastiks, Naastiks, everyone.

Best bhajan for nastik is Kun mandir maa janchau yatri by late great and mahan poet my guru, my inspiration laxmi parsad devkota

We are indeed from single cell evolved into big nirman prani

look at our puran what it says.............to be a human you have to pass through Some many junis after millions of years ( in scientific way we evolved from single bacteria to human) thats why hinduism is great

PQ1 and Confused,

I think I need to clarify this first. By saying I am an atheist, I was just professing my faith, hai. I did not mean to offend the theists. Bagawan kasam !

You might have noticed me recently telling in my kurakani with Ashu that although I am an atheist, I understand the value and power of faith.

And I am an atheist only in a theoretical sense, to be precise. I simply don't believe in the conventional [notion of] God.

In practical sense, however, I am as faithful as a theist could be.

I have my own version of God. I do my own version of prayer and so on. My God is very close to what probably my conscience is. But often times, it's more than that. And my prayer is always in a form of a summon to my God, just asking Him to be a witness to my action and intention that are not visible to any other people beside me.

Although I do not pray to God asking for a favor, it feels good to wish good things to people and not to mention to myself. That is how I like bhajans like 'Garaj Baras'.

MM ji,

'Yatri' is one of my dearest poems. I would rather describe it as an anti-bhajan rather than a bhajan. Because in bhajan, you address God. In Yatri, Devkota is addressing humans. And you are right, this is a bhajan for the atheists. As a matter of fact, I think this is an anthem for athesists ! But again, like I described for my version of faith, 'Yatri' too has it's own version of God, it's own version of the way of worshipping. So, like myself, it is atheist in theory but theist for all practical purposes.

So although it was kinda absurd to hear this song being played in Dharmik Karyakram sometimes, it is not totally misfitting either.

=========
PQ1,

WHERE DID YOU HATCH FROM? WHO CREATED YOU? WHO CREATED YOUR BACTERIA FOREFATHERS? WHO CREATED THE MITOCHONDRIA? WHO CREATED THE AMINO ACIDS & FINALLY WHO CREATED THE VACCUM?

Profound questions indeed. I do have more complicated questions but essentially asking what you are asking here. And I must admit I do not have the answer that satisfies myself.

However, I do have questions that somehow compensate for the lack of satisfying answer, thus bringing me to be at peace with these unanswered questions.

The question is simple. Who created the creator ? If a creator is not required to create the creator, then why can the same assumption not be applied to the universe ?

We don't know who did, why and how was done the explosion of Big Bang. However, everything since then can be explained as or rather assumed to have happened by the MINDLESS law of nature.

Creation aside, if you are talking about the MINDFUL designing of the universe and life, I will not challenge people's faith. However, I will say this much- whoever designed life, the way it is sustained and the way it evolves in nature, that guy must be a lousy designer. If he had hired me as an assistance, I could have given him a better design.

As a matter of there are people (scientists) who have been trying to find the way to fix God designed imperfections (for example genetic diseases), however President Bush would not give federal money to this kind of things, rey kya ajha last ma. He thinks it is insult to God to try to fix His imperfections by using federal money. Private money is fine. But again, most people including scientists agree for the time being that our knowledge is way to little at this point of time to go beyond certain things because the risks are unknown.

See how difficult our life is the DESIGNER making by living in secrecy and keeping His designs as CLASSIFIED materials for humans. Tara hami pani ke kum, at a super snail's pace nai sahi, we are getting those secrets through our jasoos (researchers) working at their labs. It does not matter whether or not we ever be able to get all the secrets. What matters is we have got some mostly in the past century and will get more and more as centuries goes by.

PQ1,

I agree that our brian has limitation. But we don't know what is that limitation. We don't know if we can not find the way to circumvent that limitation and understand still more things. We don't know a lot of things as yet.

That is why, I believe we should NOT ask people to stop their quest to acquire more knowledge. And to be fair, we also should not force those people who have taken a well-thought decision to stop, to give up their surrender.

Let's make our own choices. Let's celebrate the freedom to make choices. Let's celebrate humanity. And divinity too.

Nepe, thank you for your reply. I seem to understand your thoughts, and i also float on the same boat as you do, i also have my own form of god that i pray, and nomatter what the circumtances are i will always attend all the dharmik functions that require my presense, as a son, brother, any realtionships, because i do not want to be unrespect-ful to any faith that has existed for such a long long time.., anyways at last by reading ur post u dont seem like an atheist to me..

Who created the creator ? If a creator is not required to create the creator, then why can the same assumption not be applied to the universe ?

Nepe, you are looking at a creator as a biological being. Creator sud be perfect, and we with our "limited knowledge" sudnt be capable of describing it. Universe existed forever and it is everything, and this universe is the "god", because it stands there causeless, all powerful. But at last all what i said cannot be proved, because i am just saying there "sud" be a creator, but conceving is one thing and convincing me is other. Just like you conceving us to beilive you will win a nobel prize one day, is just imagination, but the fact is u are not getting any nobel prize, , the real truth can only be known thru experience. so sicence can never prove or disapprove the existence of god...

As a matter of there are people (scientists) who have been trying to find the way to fix God designed imperfections (for example genetic diseases),

nepe, do u know how children are born? Children are born from there parents, and hence parents from their parents, and we do not know how the first human evolved but, we do know for certain that he was evolved here in this earth. and if there is a designer, there is no point for desginer to desgin huamns, in this vast universe. We create things to serve this un-cause universe.

i must say i'm very impressed by the intellectual and philosophical aptitude of the sajhaits... it gets a little immature sometimes but there are a few here that know what they're talking abt... so Let me throw in my two cents (= dui paisa), if i may...

the problem with faith is just that, it is one's belief, so by definition it is subjective... and, of course, anything subjective lacks objectivity...

people have been talking about the creator as the supreme being who is beyond our capcity to evaluate... but that theory in itself is a paradox... if the creator is so beyond our perception, then why do we keep trying to define him/her/it with our own imagination... when we do this, we are limited by our imperfections to describe him therefore, we discernibly give him/her/it human characteristics...

Most religions define god as this 'surpreme' being:
- who must be thanked and ass-kissed frequently
- who will put you in a crater of fire and torture you for eternity, if you don't do as told
- who will pardon you, even if you kill a hundred people, if you just beg for his forgiveness
- who thinks he's the sh*t and all the other beings are second class
- who will send his son to die for a few thousand isrealites, but will watch helplessly as two world wars, plagues, slavery, genocide and dozens of famines ravage the world he created

what are we talking about here in not a supreme creator, but a dysfuntional, arrogant, pompous and incompetent dictator, at best!
