Curious whether anyone's renewed their passport recently, and how it went for them.

I was dumb-struck  by the attiutude of the Nepal Embassy at DC when I inquired on this matter.

So here's what my experience was like - their site provides an application form. It supposedly has links to instructions on how to fill it up and what size of photo to use and all that. Those links don't open. The form is asking for 35 X 45 photos. Places in US take 51X51 passport size photos.

I called last month and spoke in English - some guy piked up the phone, told me to go to their website, follow the instructions and send the application. And the passport would processes in 2 months time once they've received it.

I found out about the photo size discrepancy and I called again, and this time I spoke in Nepali. Diffrent guy picked it up. Here's what he said
  • A4 size in Nepal is different from A4 size in US
  • If I filled out the form available on the website, I'll never get the new passport. Because of the size issue (both paper size and photo size), the goverment won't approve my application.
  • So the only option - I need to send a paid envelope to them with a letter enclosed asking for a hard copy of the form.
  • They send the form to me, I fill it up and then send it back to them.
  • They send it to Nepal, and it'll come back in 3 months after that.
Is it just me, or is this pretty much the only way of getting my passport renewed?

@ riddle,
your question is not clear.
If you are outside of Nepal, definitely you should have a passport. then you can apply for MRP even if your existing one has not expired.
But if you are in Nepal and doesnot matter if you have or never had a passport then yes you can have a MRP and the process is same.
The processing fee is different in Nepal. Rs 5000 for normal processing and Rs10000 for expedite.

sorry that my answer would be out of topic about renewing the passport in DC...

I haven't renewed the passport in DC

i did it in Nepal, while i travel i have to carry both, VISA is in one and renewed passport was the other one, And now its expired, obviously if you renew VISA, you don't have to carry the old one, it will be stamped in the new one..

Apologies if I weren't clear enough. I was wondering if anybody had his/her passport renewed in the US.

Riddle you don't need to send ur nagarikta, but they are very fussy about the picture. I had to send them 3 diff pics before they ok'd it.  Make sure the pic shows both ears CLEARLY(they were very particular about this).  And make sure your face is centered and very light in color.  I think they scan your pic into your passport.

 Hmm Thanks, BC.

As an aside, I was gonna set Toribari as my background for PP pics but someone advised me against it.

So I did exactly what they asked me to do; had to cave in eventually.
  • Mailed an empty envelope
  • They enclosed a hard copy of the form and mailed the envelope back
  • Once you see the hard copy, you'll know what size photos you need
  • Then I mailed the package
  • New passport arrived in 3 months
Note: Make sure you send a copy of your citizenship card with that package (original or translated, either will work). I never brought mine with me from Nepal, and that caused a semi havoc :)

Cheers

 Hi Guys,

My passport expires in Nov 2013, so can I send for renewal on May 2013- 6 months prior or how soon I can send?
Also do they require original nepali citizenship too, I knew before they wanted original passport or citizenship but now it seems like that want both the documents. If someone has gone through this process recently, your feedback will be much appreciated. Many Thanks.

Hi Nagarik,

It seems like you went through this process recently. Do you need to send them original "nagarikta" for passport renewal. If so I assume they will return your original nagrikta, old passport and new passport in the mail? Thanks for your help.

This is what i did......

(After they returned my previous application form, reason --> it was not on A4 size). They sent me 2 hard copy of the form, but i messed it up while thump printing. (my thumb is much bigger than the box in that form); Their instruction was signature and thump print should not touch the box.

1. Ordered A4 size Paper from Amazon.
2. Printed the Application in A4 size form.
3. went to costco and took passport photo 2X2; came home and cut it to be 45mmX35mm
Documents i sent
1.Old Passport
2.Application along with Photo (don't stick photo in the form)
3.Copy of Nagarikta
4.Money Order.
5.Return Envelope (with delivery conformation)

received new passport along with OLD (marked void) within 5 weeks. I was expecting more than 3 month as i applied it during Dashain period.

How does one go about renewing his/her passport w/o citizenship? They need either the original/copy of nagarikta and mine is nowhere to be found.

My passport is set to expire in a couple months!

I recently renewed my passport through Nepalese Embassy in DC. I got the letter size paper to print the passport renewal form. You can get it through amazon.com and other online sites (staples where you can also do store pick up). For the photos ( Qty =3)  it got 2X2 photo and make it our passport size (I think it's 35mmX45mm). Along with this I sent my old passport ( I kept I-94) and also original nagarikta.         I got it back in  around 2 months though they said it would take 3 months.
I sent through UPS with return envelope

Old hand written passport is expiring. Is an original citizenship a must (applying to DC) to get new MRP?
