Do you have your own private bedroom? Do you cook food everyday and eat at least two meals at home? If yes, $400 a month is pretty reasonable. Don't you have a gym and swimming pool in your apartment? Or r u living in a house?

However, if you choose to stay with a room-mate, who is understanding and responsible in a one or two bedroom apartment, you may be able to knock that amount down to $300-$350 and also have some privacy.

 IC bro,

Yeah, you are absolutely right with your point. Go ahead and find a room-mate. Time to be real. Flat rate is for dummies who never lifted a fallen stick at home in Nepal and came abroad.

I have seen 4 types of Nepalese in USA. They are:

BAN (Broke Ass Nepali): They are always broke and ask you money. They don't save coz they either send most % of money they earn home or spend on cigarettes, weed, and beer.

TAN (Trick Ass Nepali): He will try to trick you to make you pay more. He is cheap and go down to low level for the sake of few $'s. An example, he buys stuffs for personal use and make you pay without letting you know, he knows all the tricks.

FAN (Fake Ass Nepali): Nepal ma dui chhak khana dhou dhou chha tara yaha show off garnu parchha. They lie about everything and the most interesting part is you will know about it. They are just fooling themselves.

&

Me: I real hard working, versatile responsible Nepali with a goal. I keep it real.

Just b careful with BAN, TAN and FAN b!tche$.

@furke, man, i really hope i'd find someone like you in this part of town..since i know you live in North...i live in south..but you're saying just one room mate? dont you think thats more expensive and less interaction with people than living in a group of 3-4...obviously theres no more privacy left when you live with 3-4 people...

 IC bro,
You can stay with 3/ 4 people. I now stay with 3 other friends. And it is cheaper too. But, it is hard to find good room-mates unless you know sb from Nepal already and close to you.

Internalconflict,
Never make a decision to live with 3-4 guys in a roomate. As furkey said "Its very hard to find a good roomate".If u know somebody from Nepal and they are really good thats alright but just as a roomate if u decide to live with many guys the quality of life will ruined . There won't be any privacy. I won't suggest anybody to live more than 2 people in a roomate. I have seen lots of Nepali frens room . Its like a dumpster. The first thing they never clean is Kitchen and second is restroom .So, brother spending 100 more dollar can give u good qualitative life than why not?

a word of caution: Nepaliharusanga basdai chhau bhane ramrosanga bichar gara, most are selfish and fall in one of those 3 categories furke pointed out.
ma khaira harusanga baschhu, 6 people in a 2 storey house and here are my monthly expenses:

Rent: 250 includes everything - internet, electricity, water, garbage, TV, etc
Food: ~ 100
School: ~ 125
Cell: 30
Health Insurance: ~ 80
Misc: ~ 50
Transportation: ~ 75
Gym: School gives for free
(No Car > No Gas > No Auto Insurance)

Again: beware of nepali room mates, they might not be as good as you expect

hera bhai ( finally sajha ma mero pani bhai aayo jasto cha apparently) u brother seems like a pretty cool guy that he's accepting a decent/reasonable amout of money from u every month, had u had a brother like mine who would neither ask nor accept money from his brother and keep on adding  favours i would have recommened u to leave that place right now but since u r paying for ur stay (SO YOUR BROTHER IS NOT DOING YOU ANY FAVOUR AS YOU ARE PAYING FOR UR STAY YOURSELF)and enjoying ur privacy in a seperate bedroom paying 400 a month,i would say thats a heck of a deal. i assume u just moved to a bigger city leaving ur university that u attended last semester,if that is the case then let me tell you something, when you are working 60+ hours a week attending school full time, all you care is about having a sound sleep and ur homeworks due dates(AND THAT WOULD ONLY BE POSSIBLE IF YOU CONTINUE TO LIVE WITH YOUR BROTHER).   trust me your yearning of making friends will be gone the very next day ur school resumes. and about being center of attraction among friends, hya [Disallowed String for - use not allowed] kati bela arulai tala paru bhanera manche kuri raka hunchhan bhayou aba center of attraction so stop thinking with you dick and thank ur "khappar" for landing you in a circumstance in which you are in right now.

aba garum topic ko kuro. mero kharcha

400 a month is heck of a deal...there is no way you can..compete with that...i gurantee it will cost you more than that if u venture out on your own and u surely will end up in one of those categories mentioned above..lol...now jokes apart..u will have a secure and safe future  with your brother...dont think about moving until your brother says something that hurts your feelings or treats u bad..but be real myann...its very hard to find people who are willing to help you out. he is not asking you much because you are new (i can make out that you are pretty new in america from the way you are talking) he must have had hard time in his initial days and he is just helping you adjust....its hard to find people like that...as time passes by ask him how can you help him?? its not going to stay 400 forever..mind that..and about the favor thing ...ill say you are lucky..so dont move out yet..

It all depends on what part of country you living, eg. if you live in Boston area, you have to chip $400 just for rent, if you want a private room, utilities extra........... and if you share with a friend, still gonna be more than $200.
Groceries...... Sure gonna be more than $100.... things are expensive now...... unless you wanna live with occasional Ramen and with daal, Bhat and Chicken. One lb of Goat meat cost you $6.00 and even if you buy 1 lb once a week, $25.00 is gone. 25 lb of rice is now $22.00. Green vegetables are lot more expensive than chicken.
So, $400 total everything included with private room seems preety reasonable if you are living on southern states ( i heard rent is cheaper there, not sure though) heck of deal if it is in cities like Boston.
Trust me, you can no way manage yourself with that money in Boston. Utilities especially heating cost is really high in winter months. If you share wifi through router...... you can get internet cheaper and if you dont want a Cable TV in your own room then Cable bill might also be shared ( assuming one TV in living room). Car insurance again depends on state you living, In boston area..... even if you have more than 6 years of clean driving history, you will end up paying around $100 per month for Full insurance, less than 6 year of driving history or some accident or ticket........ way above $100.
gas depends on how much you drive and what kind of car you drive.....
Tution and health insurance...... you know how much you are paying..... depends on type of insurance and college.

If you dont have to move out...... be proud you are paying for yourself and getting a good deal and still living with your close owns (Home away from home). For me thats agreat deal.
I live with my wife a one kid.......
1 bedroom Apt- $1050 ( trust me it is cheaper one I am getting there is nothing fancy just decent apartment)
Gas and electricity - average of $125 ( runs upto $250 plus in winter and around $80 + in summer)
Cable TV + internet - around $65 (Comcast sucks)
Vonage world premium - $65 ( $55 + tax, Good thing is Nepal land line is free so I dont spend money on Phone cards anymore)
Cell Phone - $55 ( T-mobile 750 minutes + night and weekends 2 lines- No contract- No data plan)
health Insurance- $300 ( $74/week fdeducted from pay check---through employer)- this sucks $200 co-payment if you need to go to emergency room)
No tuition for Now- but will be paying preety soon again.
grocery- $600 + minimum( $150+/ week either on market Basket or Stop and Shop..... Kids are expensive
Car insurance- $92 ( was $62 till last year but had an accident and jumped to $92)
Gas- $100 + per month ( I drive 2010 Corolla and fill once on every 12-13 days)

So, TOTAL is $2450 for 3 bones
Means $800+ per Person......
Total family income less than $4200 per month..... (this is after tax and health insurance though)
Uff....... I forgot to mention Car payment- $277 per month, Credit card payments .......Dont even want to mention (total around $14,000 and i am payikng about $500 per month).
So, I am saving about $1000- $1200 per month now...... and is still keeping creditcard debt ( most of them are running on 0% APR.
Life in America SUCKS but I am enjoying it, especially with my 2 year old one.
