Hi all, I am a college student who have yet to find her true passion in life. Even though I am in my early twenties, I still don't know what I wanna do for the rest of my life. I feel kinda lost. Sometimes just thinking about the future scares the hell out of me. Do you guys face similar issues? Another question I wanna ask is ,What motivates you to do things that you do in life? P.S. If you guys don't mind, please share your life experiences, both the good and the bad. And if you have any advice, I will be more than happy to listen to it. Thanks :-)

Ever heard of goal-setting? A long-term goal can be achieved in increments as there is a saying "A journey of thousand miles has to begin with the first step". Whenever you successfully complete a goal milestone, motivate yourself further by rewarding yourself with something which can be inexpensive but gratifying. Having said that you need to figure out first what your career goal is. Call a friendly representative at your College Career Services, make an appointment, and collect brochures on majors that lead to different career paths. Old friends, classmates, former teachers or close relatives, who know your strengths, weaknesses, or passions inside-out, can also provide you with invaluable feedback in determining a route to fulfilling a viable ambition.
Good luck now.

Hi summer05, I totally empathize with you. As you, I'm in my early twenties too, and I do get lost at times. The bitter part of my life is that I've made tons of mistakes in my past. There was a time when I used to contemplate on those mistakes on daily basis. But, that have changed today. I've learned to let go things, and focus on my today. In my opinion, to be motivated in life, you need to know the power of "now". NOW, TODAY, THIS MOMENT .....is very vital. Just remember that your future is determined by your actions today.
P.S. personally, what I believe is; the only certainty in life is the uncertainty. You can never be sure abt. your future, so what I suggest is try and make your present day a productive day.

Thank u all for your replies. @Mr Hyde. If I knew about my long-term goals, I wouldn't be asking this question ni. @naniktiaamai. Have you graduated from college already? Sometimes I feel that being in college is downright depressing. There is so much to study and then there is also the uncertainty of not getting a job once you graduate. But I guess that's life. Just gotta be positive about things. "the only certainty in life is the uncertainty" When I think about it, this phrase that you wrote is very very true. :-)

@summer05, Not yet, I still have two more years to go. "being in college is downright depressing" couldn't agree more. Especially, when all of you're friends have graduated...:( !! But, you know we have to do this. There is no way out. You know what, I wanna share this with you. My psychology professor once said.." We, the humans are sad not because of ourselves; we are sad because of others happiness". We have this tendency of comparing our lives with others, which is not beneficial at all. What we need to do is just focus on our personal life; just focus on how to improve your life. There is a saying, "Contentment should not be relative to others". Do what you think is right, study what you want to. I know it's hard to enjoy life when things doesn't seem to work. But again, being depressed and over thinking is just not the solution. And, as you said," Just gotta be positive", yes, that's the least we can do.
P.S. Avoid over-analyzing your life, just go with the flow. Be happy..:)!! wish you good luck!!

just shut down your overflowing hormones and the jumble they are creating inside your brain. focus at NOW- that is your study, your work(which helps you sustain).keep dragging on and soon you'll arrive. but, fyi, there is not a single phase in life where one is NOT confused or NOT motivated. so, accept it as a part of life and do what seems to be right at the moment.good luck!

There are two types of person, very simple to see half full or half empty. Try to be optimistic and always think that good days will be coming soon. That will make you lively, happy and laborious. Life is series of difficulties but you have to face each and every so that you feel difficulties is usual. So, patience and stick in one job is also important. Finally, your state of mind is most important, control yourself, always laugh, try to be happy. It is difficult but it is a way of life and every one has to learn even at the end of the life too.

...Or,When it comes to being successful or publicly claiming a success, be like a Nepali politician who would make a regular trip to one of the neighboring countries on crores of rupees in expenses and claim the trip "very successful" without having to reveal any clear agenda before the visit actually starts.Basically they adjust the expected result as found in actual result and claim it a "Success" to avoid appearing as being wasteful of authority, time, and money.Getting back to Summer5 at her comment:"@Mr Hyde. If I knew about my long-term goals, I wouldn't be asking this question ni."Your response sounds like an answer to an imaginary comment from me "Figure out your career/lifelong goal by yourself".Just how callous! Read my comment again! Best of all, it's free except for a few seconds of a twenty-something-woman's life. Seriously, you need to put yourself through a thorough SWOT analysis of yourself if and only if you are even slightly concerned about your future unless you want to take life as it comes as some are suggesting here.

If you are in the US, please make sure that whatever you do and choose is something you like and passionate about. Remember, there is no social and family pressure and that you're free to choose, and whatever you choose. There will always be something that you can make a living out of it in this land. Don't try to be computer scientist when you have no passion nor the capability. In the long run, there is nobody to hound you or pressure you to be a doctor when all you want is to be a "designer" (Prabal Gurung for example). Most Nepali people (esp older generations) who came to the US decades ago fall under the category and are in limbo spiritually and mentally. Yea...they have a good job, house and status among the Nepali peers but most of them did it without passion, all washed up with Nepal view of success of wealth and power through hook or crook, not about passion. Their capability gets saturated and hence they cannot think outside of the box, hoard mentality. Sadly,I fall under the same category. Do something that you're truly passionate about and don't get forced into anything because of this and that. My 2 cents advice to our budding newer generation. Good luck with your future.

I knew it. A simple question creates the most Buzz. Thanks for creating the thread.
What motivates me? I think Motivation is really phased. You should ask yourself and follow on things that you really are passionate about. Of course, most of our motivation revolves around Career goals and blah blah. Unless you are a quitter or opt for easy-way-outs, persistence/determination would take you there where you want to go.
Having said that, it is very likely you'd lose patience/motivation at times. Its a human psyche, strange and complex. For this - look around and try to find passion in small things. I have seen people find motivation in a pet, for example, that you can grow up together with, who would motivate you at times you feel demotivated .. by looking at small things it does that makes your life so meaningful. Or a friend who you can share and do stuff together. If you're lucky enough may be your Significant Other who you can emotionally and physically attach yourself into and work together to make your life meaningful on its purpose. Or if you're into Music, play on and spend that moment of contentment that leads you to the way of self-motivation.
Ahh, words are an overkill. Simply learn to enjoy life with whatever it has provided to you and always look forward for better!

My motivations vary from time to time. At the moment, I am motivated by
(1) the desire to do well personally so that I can have a decent life for me, my parents and my future wife/ kids. (2) the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others and (3) the need to be recognized and appreciated both for my current accomplishments and future potential
Sometimes I am also motivated by the need to be accepted, loved and desired.
To each his own I guess.
