[ Sajha notice ] User is being banned for creating castist thread. Promoting castist threads - that divide instead of bringing together Nepali communities, which is the goal of sajha, - are highly discouraged.

Glad to see Admin doing this finally. People like the originator of this thread should be ashamed of themselves for holding such views...

Actually its unfair to ban user gauelketo, based on his thread. I have seen plenty of Sajha members had created threads on 'cultural differences' to discuss wisely and positively. No doubt, some users had acted foolishly by submitting nasty comments. But that doesn't mean, we shouldn't discuss about it. Of course, it is a sensitive and awkward issue to discuss publicly and we must take precautions to choose the right words to explain our opinions.
Sajha admin should have warned the users, posting a notice on the top of the thread, not to discuss and comments on race and caste. UFF.. NOT CASTE RE 'CULTURAL DIFFERENCES'.

SiS: It's completely fair to be having sensible discussions about anything at all. It's only when insenstivie people like Gaulebro start making seriously racist remarks that do nothing but divide the nation. I do have to agree with you in one respect though that there are many more here that need to be purged from the system to make the banning of Gaulebro fair.

yup, casteist, racist, they all originate from the same limbic, pre-neo cortex, ancient amphibious part of the brain. I support San's move whole-heartedly. ban them and kick them out.

you cannot wipe out the castes though..... becasue each cast has inherited certain traits from previous generations.... if you really wanna wipe out the castes.. then you will have to ban marriages within the castes... and force peole to marry the other caste.. and after amny many year later.. there will be no caste... Can you eliminate say Germans, British, Irish, Paksistanis, Chinese, Japanese... they are also like caste.... !!! Caste will remain for a long long time on this earth.. sajha can ban caste related thread or users who post caste related threads.. Before that, why dont; you guys eliminate the word CASTE from the dictionaries????

To Ved and others, I agree with you that caste cannot be wiped away. Bad habits die hard and this is a centuries old bad habit that will no doubt take a while to be wiped out of our minds. Caste differences have always popped up in sajha and I have tried my best to be lenient on sporadic outbursts. But when the issue begins to take up center stage on the forefront of every discussion, then I have to step in to salvage the spirit of sajha - that of providing help to other Nepalis by sharing of information. Every so often I have to remind our friends in sajha that strong belief in caste system is very old school and not befitting the current age we live in. I believe that we are human beings first, then Asian, then Nepalese, then within our ethnic caste network, and in that order. Humanity comes before anything else and we are all Nepalese before any caste, and it has to come before that. Let us not lose our humanity in our effort to prove our caste is better than being human! Below is a post on the same subject made few months back. Well... I hope we can all be Nepalese - Asians with a good sense of Humanity first. Then we can all appreciate each others different ethnic backgrounds without having to prove who is better than who.
11/8/2009: Here's a thread from 2 years back that I want to bring to your attentionhttp://sajha.com/sajha/html/openThread.cfm?threadid=51818#504849In historical times, it makes sense for a tribe to stick together and have self serving prejudices against other tribes to protect themselves from external extremities. In this day and age, a person's worth is determined by the sum total of his or her abilities. Unfortunately a lot of people are blinded by their own self serving prejudices to feel superior about themselves and their own group of people. Most of the visitors in sajha have a good educational background and we need to look beyond our own individual castes in order to plant the seed for a better equal Nepal. Few posters enjoy playing on the inter caste insecurities that is deeply rooted amongst many of us. We need to rise above and beyond these insignificant instigations and provocations that are meant to antagonize and aggravate the castist insecurities that is imbibed within us by the society we grew up in.We are sum total of our own personal abilities and any success these instigations get in arousing our wrongful senses only help to fuel the fire of our dissent and differences to separate us. We Nepalese are a helpful bunch as we can see by many helpful threads within and beyond sajha. We need to stop being defensive at these provocations. Only when we can laugh at these intolerant instigations will we be able to rise above the castist environment that is promoted by few individuals or groups that benefit by breaking up the Nepalese into separate groups.

@novaguy83; I agree with you and thats what I am trying to say, too.
@Ved555; Yeap, I am with you.
I find Sajha double-standard, we can curse black people, Indians, but we can not express our views to our own Caste. Do you know Afro-American in US, they like to say "N" word to each other but they hate when the outsider say it them. We should act the same, we can discuss and argue ab't our Caste within our Nepalese people but if outsider come to divide us then we'll unite.

Yeah Right!!, Why Sajha admin banned the user on Bahun thread? Why other users have freedom? They were hammering "Newa" Caste for like weeks.
MAAN MA CHITTA BHUJHEKO CHAINA. IT HURTS. SAJHA IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE, BUT I CAN'T STAND INEQUALITY ...AND I THINK THIS IS NOT A PLACE FOR ME.

I do care to answer few things. After all sajha is for expressing one's opinion and discussing things and ideas related to Nepal and Nepalis in a cordial and respectful manner. Let us not misconstrue this issue. Discussing about caste related issues and sharing information is perfectly fine in sajha. What is not fine is to accuse a certain caste of being lobhi. What is not fine is to misrepresent, demoralize, derogate, degenerate, designify, defame, defile, abuse, exploit, offend, bad mouth, vilify, inundate, mistreat, victimize, slander, and instigate a certain caste. If someone posts an article from a valid source with data showing X% of caste occupy 90% of administrative positions in Nepal, that is simply dissemination of information, and cannot be considered casteist thread. But if someone goes ahead to bad mouth a certain caste then it clearly shows the intolerant nature of the user(s) in question. Okay let me get to this particular incident and the reservations raised herein. Everyone knows speeding is illegal yet everyone (most) drives above the speed limit at various points in their driving career. When you get stopped by the police you cannot argue with the police saying oh there were all these other drivers in front who were speeding faster! If something is wrong, a line needs to be drawn at some point in time, and the time happened to be this thread whose topic clearly is of discriminatory nature. (The banning of the user is not really important. In fact I have unbanned him - his 2nd post does show some remorse.) The nature of sajha is that things tend to be pretty laid back and lenient as far as censoring because I believe there is an inherent good in mankind and that any negative behavior will stop after a given point. Most of the time its true and things fall into the black hole of oblivion in the annals of sajha archives. But sometimes due to adrenaline and the perceived ethnic divide, the caste issue tends to stick around a bit longer. When these intolerant things stick around more than normal then I, as an admin, have to step in to make sure too many feathers are not ruffled for too long a period. Lot of sajha friends who have stuck around longer have been witness to a lot more reservations placed upon the admin who has to step in at some point in time. For example in this thread I am blamed for acting upon anti-Newar threads. Please be assured that I can dig up more threads like this where I have been blamed. It's human nature to tilt reality towards your own prejudices and I don't have anything against anyone pointing fingers at me. In this thread, questions are being raised for acting upon anti-Bahun thread. As long as questions like this are raised, we can safely assume that castist sentiments are still strong. As far as fairness and equality goes in sajha and in my own person experience - everyone is equal until proven otherwise. As far as castism in sajha is concerned, the act of stepping in to stop the bullet is more important than who is saved when. The fact is - noone deserves the bullet (for being a certain caste). We need to channel our castist sentiments for a greater good. As small tributaries flow into the great ocean, all of our small ethnicity makes the broader Nepal, and we need to be focussed on the greater good of the broader Nepal than bicker with each other on our differences. I hope I have made some sense. Here is a piece by George Carlin that I want to share with you.
