IMHO, Gore didn't deserve it at all...The jackass doesn't even practice what he preaches. For instance, He got the Nobel for his works on raising enviromental issues, right? But look at his energy bill for just ONE of his estates: Its above $2K and even Larry King blasted him on that!! And the fool still talks about being an environmentalist. WTF?? How can that be when you use 25 times more energy than the average American or 250 times the average Bangladeshi (as per Reg Morrison's Spirit in the Gene: 1 US consumer = 10 Bangladesh consumers)!!
The peeps at the Noble commision are a bunch of yes-men who I believe were politically swayed to put Gore out there like that. These fools at the commision snubbed Gandhi 5 times and here they are awarding the Peace prize to someone whose one house uses 20-30 times more energy than my does. This is complete Bull!!

Pls find out his contribution to kyoto. He didn't get it just for the movie 'An inconvenient truth'.
people at sajha seem to be more learned than the ones in Nobel panel.

If I understand correctly, the Nobel Committee does not disclose the complete list of nominees so I guess we wont know if there were more deserving candidates nominated this year and who they all were. The Nobel committee has in the past made statements with it's awards, and peace being a subjective thing, I suppose they have a lot of leeway and wiggle room when it comes to justifying their choice. That said, I don't know if there were more deserving people, but Al Gore certainly wasn't undeserving of it either IMO regardless of what I see as minor blemishes on his record. Congratulations to him and the IPCC And happy Friday to everyone on the thread!

IMHO, it was bit premature for Nobel Committee to award peace prize to Al Gore. Existence of global warming itself or the anthropogenic cause of global warming may go down in the history as one of the biggest hoax. Remember global cooling that we were supposed to fear duing '80?
Large section of scientific community still does not buy anthropogenic cause of global warming. To say that the debate is now settled and closed is disingenuous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientists_opposing_the_mainstream_scientific_assessment_of_global_warming
Cautioning on the err side is good but FEAR MONGERING is another.
Even if global warming is real, Al Gore has done more damage to this cause by politicizing this issue. Global warming has become a new religion - if you don't buy this argument you are probably a right wing nut.
This is a bait :-) Let's see if our internet darling Ashu fall for it.

Nepkanchi - That was one of my initialreactions too. But their argument is environmental issues, including climate change, are becoming the reasons for present and future conflict so he was recognized for raising awareness and understanding Citation: Gore "is probably the single individual who has done most to create
greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be
adopted," the Nobel citation said. The UN committee, the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is a network of 2,000
scientists. It has produced two decades of scientific reports that have
"created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection
between human activities and global warming," the citation said. ... Global warming, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, "may induce
large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's
resources."
"Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world's
most vulnerable countries," it said. "There may be increased danger of
violent conflicts and wars, within and between states." http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/10/12/europe/nobel.php

Thanks Captain.
My confusion is/was about the link between "peace" and "environment". I really do appreciate his work on environment and raising the awareness about global warming. If that's the case ,he surely deserves it. Anyway, I am happy for him.

nepkanchi, As I read it, the Peace prize is for those who manage to create a change in the society by some form of influence. It is to bring together people in some sense. He did it through his work in environment...he brought (at least tried) everyone together on this one...something towards peace and harmony in the society? You need not necessarily help avert (or try to avert) a war to get a peace prize...look at the case of last year. It is also not directly related to peace. Read it on BBC. They have a decent coverage.

At the same time, many people have criticized Gore and the movie for ballooning the dangers of the climate change and using arguments based on weak evidences. Specially the effects of climate change... Read about the debate on whether the movie should be shown to high school kids...I think its on bbc as well.

Haddock, good to see you here. BTW, here's from the nobelprize.org: "Mahatma Gandhi was nominated in 5 different years, first in 1937 and lastly in 1948, the year he was assassinated. Although Gandhi was not awarded the Prize (a posthumous award is not allowed by the statutes), no Laureate was named for 1948 either." (Source: http://nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/database.html).
For me, even though I am a stauch supporter of the democrats and always have been, Gore just doesn't fit my perception of a Nobel Peace Prize winner. See my above post where Larry King balsted him for his energy bill. All Gore did was publicize the research already in place by the pioneers such as Reg Morrison and the sceintists who showed concrete proof in 2005 in regards to humans causing Global Warming. They, not Gore derserve it more for enviromntal issues. He is being crowned for research which was someone elses!! This in my mind is not what the Nobel should be about...Atleast the guys in the Nobel economics committee have been doing a better jobin their awards.

Thanks to the climate alarmists lobbying the inconvenient truth of of Gore. You have successfully managed to honor this idiot with the badge of mediocrity. I cant imagine how bunch of people in some obscure town in Norway can decide what the world raves as a pinnacle of achievement. Winning the nobel peace prize is almost like winning election in US. Guess who was in Oslo lobbying for this honor in April.
If you are one of those people alarmed by these alarmists and think that Greenland is going to melt and penguins are going to die, check the details that are fabricated under Gore’s beautiful colored and simplified statistics. Only thing Gore can do is talk and even that he cannot do well.I doubt greatly that Gore can understand any climate models. During the sophomore year at college, “he received one D, one C-minus, two C's, two C-pluses and one B-minus, an effort that placed him in the lower fifth of the class for the second year in a row.†Check this for details:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac...37397- 2000Mar18
Also, it makes no sense that Gore and IPCC get it together. Gore and IPCC disagree with each other. These five individuals must have been drunk while they made their decisions. Its not their job to influence geo politic while people who saved people's life in the holocaust remained empty handed.
Anyways to those neointellectuals who like to chew the propaganda in the news and regurgitate it in a forum like this because they cannot check the science themselves, congratulations. Its time for you to be heard, jump in the bandwagon and ask Gore to run for president.

Congratulations Mr. Gore and IPCC!!
Mr. Gore got the nobel price for his simple philosophy--"Practice what I preach, not what I practice." Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006, and the movie talks about saving energy, right? No one deserves this Nobel Hypocrisy Prize more than Al Gore. Sire, you rightly deserve this award. America, along with the entire world, is proud of you.
Mr. Al Gore, you did learn a valuable lesson--deserving candidates don't win the race-- from 2000 presidential election, din't you? Not only you learnt your lesson, but also executated it properly. In the race of nobel peace prize, you, the less deserving candidate, are the winner. Congratulations!
It is a shame the Nobel Peace Prize went to a documentary full of fermi paradox. In fact, this documentary, due to its flaw and its inability to back up its claim, lost a lawsuit in England. This shows how truthful Mr. Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" is.
If global warming was the agenda for the Nobel Peace Prize, then, in my opinion--not that my opinion counts, should have had gone to Sheila Watt-Cloutier. But well Al Gore is now a Nobel Laureate.
Hopefully, next year a deserving person will be honored with the fame.

Now that he's won the prize, perhaps he'll turn down the AC and switch to low energy light bulbs. ### Hey there Samsara, good to see you back. Have a good weekend.
