They may be master of rhetorics, yes, agreed. But I think they are merely one-eyed king among the blinds, as far as oratory skills are concerned. For example, how many times did we hear Comrade Prachanda speak out "Yo ekkaisau satabdi ma" in his first public press conference? And how many times did he speak out "Jatiya, bargiya , bhaugolik, ra laingik adhikar"? He might as well have added Samajik, Rajnitik, Byawasayik, Aarthik, Kanuni, Batabaraniya, Swasthya etc. Whenever he runs out of ideas, he just blurts out these words to give an impression that he is a smooth orator whereas in essense, he is using redundant words in high-pitched voice. So, if Com Prachanda's speech is anything to go by, the Maoist Leaders are nothing but one-eyed King among the blinds. About use of Nepali words: They use (or try to use) exact Nepali words by translating them from English. e.g. REactionary: pratikriyabadi; regressive: pratigaman; progressive: agragaman. The key is just translate and see how it works. Words like e-mail would necessitate them to invent a completely new Nepali word as biddhutyiya patra. Why not just stick to email?

Karmarana, Calling Maoists this and that will mean nothing. You can do that, for sure; but that will achieve nothing extra at this point. The reality is that: They exist -- out in the open in Nepal. They appear to wield enormous influence in Nepal so much o that they might write the Constitution pretty much their way. They have the center stage in Nepal at the moment NO MATTER how much one dislikes them. So what is one going to do? I, for one, am not sure. To be sure, Kathmandu's left-influenced intelligentsia is pretty much in love with Comrade Prachanda & Company. So far, with the exception of Kanak Dixit who wrote in that Himal Khabarpatrika article, no one really has asked difficult questions to Prachanda. Prachanda and Baburam are, meantime, enjoying their excellent adventures in Maopal (Mao + Nepal). The PESSIMISTIC part of me thinks that Nepal is slowly being gone and lost altogether -- no matter how much we shout aloud about democracy and fundamental rights. It's heading toward being a Maoist republic, and, when that happens, we will all --the free-thinker wallahs (for what our free-thinking is worth) -- suffer through the mechanics of such a regime for the next 10 to 20 years. The OPTIMISTIC part of me HUMOROUSLY thinks that, well, Prachanda turned out to be a pot-bellied middle-aged man with a fondness of Rayban goggles, Karisma Manandhar-films and chauffeur-driven cars. Maybe the Great One appreciates the finer things in life to the point that maybe, just maybe, he turns out to be lazy enough to give up his rigid stances on so many things to make live bearable to all. Somehow, I don't like that the pessimistic side of me is winning the internal battle :-( But then, what do I know? Meantime, the former kamaiyas of Nepal -- the poorest of the poor -- are asking that the government give them property that they can call their own (i.e. private property). And Maoists are against, well, private property. Go figure!! oohi ashu

I like the new name of Nepal:MAOPAL very true Ashu.. people of nepal have proven themself veda time after time. This time also they are follwing gotahlo Prachanda ..No body dares to speak against them.. this is the new democracy and this will be the new name for democracy in coming days of nepal. who is stoping peace process? Answer is simple :Maoist. if only they really want peace and put down their weapons , we could enjoy peace.but some people here thinks no they need to keep the guns all the time so they can direct the govt. in the right direction. In that sense , democrats need to carry guns in USA to show republicans and BUSH right way..ridiculous logics..and they say they want democracy!!!!!

Ashu, you wrote about pot-belly of Prachanda, which i was about to post here in sajha earlier. I was about to paste the picture of that belly (still it's there at katnipuronline.com 's index page). Is it true to Prachanda converted himself into Christian. That's how I was told from people in Kathamndu, the Indian paper Pioneer, Delhi based wrote about that. But what are nepali media doing about this story? I wonder how things tie between communist ideas of denying private properties and Christainity.
