Porphyria's Lover

THE rain set early in to-night,
The sullen wind was soon awake,
It tore the elm-tops down for spite,
And did its worst to vex the lake:
I listen'd with heart fit to break.
When glided in Porphyria; straight
She shut the cold out and the storm,
And kneel'd and made the cheerless grate
Blaze up, and all the cottage warm;
Which done, she rose, and from her form
Withdrew the dripping cloak and shawl,
And laid her soil'd gloves by, untied
Her hat and let the damp hair fall,
And, last, she sat down by my side
And call'd me. When no voice replied,
She put my arm about her waist,
And made her smooth white shoulder bare,
And all her yellow hair displaced,
And, stooping, made my cheek lie there,
And spread, o'er all, her yellow hair,
Murmuring how she loved me—she
Too weak, for all her heart's endeavour,
To set its struggling passion free
From pride, and vainer ties dissever,
And give herself to me for ever.
But passion sometimes would prevail,
Nor could to-night's gay feast restrain
A sudden thought of one so pale
For love of her, and all in vain:
So, she was come through wind and rain.
Be sure I look'd up at her eyes
Happy and proud; at last I knew
Porphyria worshipp'd me; surprise
Made my heart swell, and still it grew
While I debated what to do.
That moment she was mine, mine, fair,
Perfectly pure and good: I found
A thing to do, and all her hair
In one long yellow string I wound
Three times her little throat around,
And strangled her. No pain felt she;
I am quite sure she felt no pain.
As a shut bud that holds a bee,
I warily oped her lids: again
Laugh'd the blue eyes without a stain.
And I untighten'd next the tress
About her neck; her cheek once more
Blush'd bright beneath my burning kiss:
I propp'd her head up as before,
Only, this time my shoulder bore
Her head, which droops upon it still:
The smiling rosy little head,
So glad it has its utmost will,
That all it scorn'd at once is fled,
And I, its love, am gain'd instead!
Porphyria's love: she guess'd not how
Her darling one wish would be heard.
And thus we sit together now,
And all night long we have not stirr'd,
And yet God has not said a word!

Nice poem.. I was expecting the writer to finish off by committing a suicide, so that they could be together at last in heaven/hell. It gave me chills in my spine.

nails,
i remember reading this peom sometime back in highschool.
the person in the poem kills the women, not becasue she could not be his (she has already submitted herself to him), but he wants to capture that moment of submission, that status quo till eternity. he does not want things to be any different than now that is why at the end he says "And thus we sit together now,
And all night long we have not stirr'd".

they labelled us..
they labelled us as brown yellow. black and white,
they told us ..
they told us what we were and what we shud be like
they made us believe..
they made us believe that we're different in this light
but when the lights go out , we're all the same
then why are we labelled as brown yellow. black or white
this aint rite...

Nepal ko chora - okay i see what you mean now! :)

Ma Chameli - yeah i found it really weird too!

lfc123 - hmm... not that's not right ke, the part where they sit together and have not stirred is after when he kills her ni, and the line that shows that says that she couldn't be his are :
Too weak, for all her heart's endeavour,
To set its struggling passion free
From pride, and vainer ties dissever,
And give herself to me for ever.

these lines say that she couldn't be his cause she wasn't strong enough to the society that was against them two uniting and becoming one, and the lines :

She put my arm about her waist,
And made her smooth white shoulder bare,
And all her yellow hair displaced,
And, stooping, made my cheek lie there,
And spread, o'er all, her yellow hair,
Murmuring how she loved me

tells the reader that he makes it sound like she wants him to kill her not what you said lfc123 ke because he doesn't really dwell on the fact that what he's doing could be wrong because she wanted and at the end he says that god also hasn't said anything meaning if even god hasn't said anything then he states that it could not be wrong.

and also lfc123, she has sumbitted herself to him but not everything ke cause if she hasn't faced the society and is too weak to do so, this shows that everything they do is in secret meaning out there she couldn't be his, like in the real world so to do so he kills her and then spends the night with the dead body ke!! ufffffff! do you get it now?? or am i wrong?? cause i could be so if am do let me know! :) :)

now that i read what you said, i think we are trying to the same thing. she could not be his, so he kills her so that he could stay with the dead body
as for getting or not getting the poem, all works of creative writing are open to intepretation. even if a poet means something else, the reader is free to understand that peom from his/her own perspective. no rigid rules and laws required for understanding poems. u can read a poem and intepret one thing and i can read the same poem and intepreet something else....haina ra maiya?

Read 'Porphyria is madness', by Barry L. Popowich. That should give u ppl the proper understanding of the poem. However, I guess it totally depends on how you interpret it. Like they say, bhagwaan tera santaan thari thari ka. Different minds, different interpretations.

lfc123 - okay!! :) :)
"all works of creative writing are open to intepretation" - i agree with this but i still don't understand where you see that he kills her because not she couldn't be his, like you said before. hmm...so can you show me or tell me where you get that interpertation from?? :) that would be great! :) :)
