Democracy loving Nepali Diaspora in various cities of the US and other countries are organizing rallies to observe Feb 1 as a 'Black Day".

In 'Nepal Democracy Google Group', we have had discussion regarding rallies at the following places,

New York
San Francisco, CA
Phoenix, AZ
Gainesville, FL
Cleveland, OH
Columbia, SC
London, UK
Hong Kong

Washington DC organized the rally yesterday. Some 200-250 people attended the rally. Slogans demanding Constituent Assembly and anti-monarchy slogans including the most popular one, "Gyane Chor, Desh Chhod", speeches and poetry recital characterized the rally.

Gainesville also had the rally yesterday. About a hundred people attended it.

New York will have a rally on the 1st of Feb in front of UN Headquarter (Ralph Bounch Park, 3:00 pm ).

London will be organizing a rally in front of the Parliament on Feb 1.

Other cities are also having rallies on Feb 1.

Although Feb 1 is being called a "black day", the fact is that it was the brightest day in terms of opening our eyes regarding monarchy. I would call it an "eye opening day" instead.

I would have thought the same, had I not been watching [the video and audio clips and reports of ] hundreds of rallies in Nepal and elsewhere since Dec 2003 (when students first chanted anti-monarchy slogans) and particularly since Feb 2005.

You might want to watch some of these rallies and comment.

I hope and pray that nobody DIES from shouting these colorful slogans against King
G anywhere in the world -- in Kathmandu or elsewhere.

So far, while some people, now and then, have been arrested (only to be released later) in Kathmandu for shouting slogans against King G, no one has been killed for engaging
in this sort of dissent.

And that's good.
After all, hey, what doesn't cost you your life, you will do it again and again.
Human nature, you see.

Too bad, then, that we can't say the same about the newest partner of our major political parties -- the Maoists who finished off, among others, a certain Mr. Chilwal
for his criticisms of the "me-so-democratic" comrades.

This is lay people's language....that everybody can understand. In every rallies and demonstration...this slogan is chanted...so what's cheap about it? I don't think he would understand or respond any intelectual approach. He is a dumb and deaf.

I hope that ashu's comment is not trying to evade gyane's deeds as other royalists try to do each time with their favorite words, anti-nationalistic elements, india, corrupt politicians etc. Though whatever they try to say are true, that doesn't justify that gyane is not chor. However, I do agree that it seems easier to chant slogans against king than maoists though maoists also deserve the equal condemnation if not more.

Rest assured that I have NEVER been an apologist for the King on Sajha or elsewhere, though I have, many times, tried to explain his actions -- in a clinical manner, the way
I saw them and the way they resonate among his supporters -- much in the same way one could try to try to EXPLAIN the recent Hamas victory in Palestine WITHOUT being
a Hamas bhakta.

Only a rabidly ideological person (such as our dear Nepe) would see my clinically trying
to explain/understand and think aloud about King's actions in a detached manner as that belonging to a bone fide royalist, which I have NEVER been on the record or off the record.

Personally, I think that the greatest threat to Nepali democracy comes more from
the Maoists than from the King.

And so, while the village-elites (party supporters) duke it out with the feudal-elites (the king's supporters) in the name of democacy (read: struggle for resources!) , it's the voiceless and the defenseless poor that do the dying on either side -- unaccountably.

Though maoists are more accountable for the pain of the country, they're pretty new and now are dominating the problems of Nepal whereas Monarchy is a hindrance to development of Nepal since ancient time. So my point is that we need to get rid of both of these and also there's a need to establish a system to eliminate the crook politicians like makune, girija, RPPs or shere. But most of us like to be biased to condemn; some condemn more to politicans, while others to king n' maoists. But all of these are problems n' to remind everyone Nepal can't be successfull until any of these parasites are eliminated from our society.

Nepeda, wha'ts the difference between gyane and king and chor? Bujna ali garo bhayo. Otherwise everyone thinks gyane is chor no matter whether people shout slogans or not be it in Nepal or DC or anywhere.....

In those pics I dont see riot-police or burning tires on intersections or dhunga-mudaa or chakka jaam on busy city streets.

Ohh yaa why they did not do CHAKKA-JAM on I-80. They could have had halted traffic from NY to CA and sent a strong message to Ganendra that his actions would not be tolerated from NY to CA.

Those protests were so inaffective compared to what we see in KTM right ?

demonstration infront of British Parliament in Westminster on the first
of February. This would be the firstever demonstration held by Nepalese
diaspora off the British Parliament.

BNDS has requested all Nepalese people residing in Britain to attend
the demonstration begining 13.00 hrs sharp.

Just a show!!!I mean these people who are protesting in US don't really care about Nepal. They are having a great life here. Most of them that I see in the pictures have been here for long time..way before maosits came to Nepal. Thats fine but they have no clue about how people are really feeling in Nepal.

So my suggestion would be to go to Nepal and protest...If you really care and have courage.

Protest at Gainsville looks more like a birthday party. As soon as candles were blown off and cake eaten, it seems someone came up with the idea of staging a demonstration. Then banners were hastily prepared, some printed and then the whole show was photogrpahed to show in Sajha. Correct me if I am wrong.
