We walked. A trail strewn with jagged splinters of rocks. Boulders splitting, at the mercy of penetrating heat and humidity. Lichens growing symbotically with algae like green tufts of body hair. I dutifully follow my guide, navigating over the treacherous crevasses. Occassionally, I kick a stray stone over the edge of the cliff we've been trailing. No splash heard. Cockle shells strewn on patches of white sand. "How the heck did the shells get here?!" I muse aloud. The silent man in front, turns around with eyebrows raised. His reverie disturbed by my idotic comment. "Nothing!". I shake my head at him as I haul myself up a boulder. It's smooth, rounded and sanded by scrambling hikers like us. But he waits for me at the top. "You were saying?". I smiled and said nothing again. He reached out, roughly grabbed my hand and impatiently pulled me to the top. "you're supposed to follow my steps, not scramble around, if you want, we'll turn back!". I pulled my hand back, electrocuted by the strength in his hand and the coarseness in his voice. A combination of surprise and annoyance. "Keep walking" I thrust out my chin at him in defiance.

Silently, he stared at me and without a word started walking ahead. I watched his back. The patch of sweat started at his mid spine, spreading steadily down his lower back. His backpack covered the upper half of his body. A trickle of sweat visible just below his nape at he reached over to maneuver around a jagged branch long dried. A skeleton hanging in defiance of life. Damn! I can see the lean muscles ripple. The wet T-shirt straining at the sheer force of the effort. I know, its the air. It's getting heady. A lethal combination of frigid gusts of spring breeze and the sun. A seduction akin to a series of hot showers and icy dips in the lakes of Sweden. I knew, he knew. I was watching.

"You go ahead!" he stepped aside. I hesitated. It was a taste of my own medicine. "Fine!' I lunged forward, my ponytail protesting at the sudden movement. He had not moved. He knew, I knew. He was watching. A patch of red spread across my cheeks. Teen years all over again. Awkwardly, I pulled myself on to a plateau. Breathless, all senses tingling. Heightened by the precarious height, penetrating scrutiny and a panorama of serrated rocks below. Silently, he came up and stood by me. I could smell a combination of sweat and cologne on him. So close was he. Again the same tingling sensation crawling down the ridges of my spine. His smell permeates the air. I close my eyes. With an effort, I rise. Slowly. My nerves a mass of high wire as wisps of long, stray hair brush his shoulders. My ponytail in awry as my muddled thoughts. A kiss. a kiss. Here. Now, sandwiched high, between the azure sky and blue Potomac! In trance, I rise to meet his perceptive gaze. Idiot! I head past him. Down the deceptive trail. Without a backward glance.

Interesting as usual Sitara!!! words come so easily to you. Wonder why they betray me when I start writing.
But you did not explain what happened in between, what caused you to leave him or he leave you, or was it a nano second cupid strike?

alright,

This is what I understood:

Sitara was trekking in Sweden with a guide who was uncouth - yet adorable, primal - yet servile, sarcastic - yet humorous, and unconventionally goodlooking.

The plot was perfect, a gusty sunny day with no one for miles away. It was neither love, nor infatuation. A thrilling sensation that would overlook a simple carnal pleasure and go beyond any other relation between a man and woman. Where? Even Sitara would not have known.

But now she is in DC, still reminisces those moments, and thinks she must have been an emotional fool.

SITARA....PLEASE COMMENT!!!!!!

Wonderful how you infuse such enthusiastic scenarios into this hiking journal-- a quick peek into the frame of mind of a hiker, charged with sensorial ions. Perhaps, the combination of height, danger, and sheer physical exertion created a magnetic field, this hiker succumbed to--- well, almost!

I'm almost certain, "the kiss" would have set off a series of rockslides! Hence, entertaining the thought was a safer alternative to entertaining the "nano second" urge. :)

Thanks friends for reading. It's actually an experimental writing! :)
Lizardking and Pisces, I had to read twice too... as I was losing my train of thoughts.

John, you romantic, I enjoy tickling your fancies. A butler! why a butler, why not a map holder? :P

Meera, not a crush. Just a "friend", I hadn't seen in a while and with whom I hiked to re-connect to the past. Perhaps, the tension was more obvious 'cause of the absence of conversation.

Dada ji: Tyahti bujnubhayecha, ma dhanya bhayen.

Nirman, thank you for your kind words. I have enjoyed reading you too.

John, Sweden hoina hau, Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls! Sweden was only a fantasy! ;)

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY !

There is a price for what we do. And we pay it dearly. Somewhere deep down in all of us, are forces that weigh heavy on the decisions we make, yet are far beyond our control. It seems that no matter how intelligent or thoughtful we may wish to be, there are decisions we make that have no rational basis regardless of how we view them. Yet, as if totally blinded by the realities around us, we make them anyway.

The silent defying one-always the unpredictable. But I like to have control. I knew she was soaking her eyes on me. It was my turn now. I told her to go ahead. Sweat mixed with perfume, wisked the air as she passed by, such an erotic intoxication. Heartbreak is exquisite when you stop to appreciate it. So much emotion rushing through you; it's like what the Tantric would describe as a sustained orgasm, except the energy is not joyful. Stealing glimpses at her, I can her looking back at me from the corner of her eyes. Blushing cheeks and shy eyes never look that inviting as then. The exposure of flesh, the flight of the hair and bouncing breasts, a man can only take so much sometimes.

I took the Key Bridge while she went down toward the Potomac and I hid behind the pillar. Her big eyes were wide open in search of me. Heart still beating and blood rushing to the head I ran threw Georgetown to cut her off.

There she was running towards me. Looking stright in her eyes, she approached me. we stared without any word just trying to read each other though the eyes alone.

It's now or never.

I grabbed her by her sweating neck, pulling her excruciatingly close to his body. She could feel the heat radiating from my mouth as I ravaged her mouth my tongue trying to overpower hers. Drenched in sweat, feeling the evening breeze sweep across their bodies, they laid gripping each other tightly. The caressing tightness of he drove me into a savage state. It was just on this trail as far as we were concerned now. Her soft thigh brushed against my hip, driving me totally out of his mind, and she pulled me closer with her long legs...... okay that's it.... :)

Absolutely, Jareen!
Hence, the reason why I didn't entertain the urge! :)
And I left him alone, undisturbed in his own private fantasies!

.....suddenly there was a flash that left me blinded for a second...her roseate lips puckered and creased a smile in between them. Her eyes twinkled like a lighthouse adimst hurricane..the sparkle visibile spasmodically. I felt I was loosing my grip....the orgasm was halfway...I should not stall my vigor...but was powerless. The oasis seemed to be a mirage.

The twinge was unbearable....starting from my belly and reaching my head. I could feel a lava oozing out of me....except that this one was crimson.

I lied on my back, looking at her shoes that treaded my chest....saw her face...she was grinning now. With her hair set loose...she stood like an amazon..but divine and innocent ....not even realizing she set some soul free. I looked at her weapon....a shiny steel...which would have been a pendant othewise. Small....but serrated....enough to beat a lullaby.

The potomac soon became ruddy, and a little more viscous.....even when the ravenous sands leached out every hues my blood had. I wished I died in orgasm....never wished I died in love.
