Nice story, thanks for sharing, yeah like Pisces, I have links to the Burmese struggle by Gorkhalis to establish their language, culture and survive. I have heard about Dalbir sharma and his contributions (may be it is not the same one). I guess they used to call him Jethe Majhan or something, during the second world war some of his close relatives moved to Shillong in India, where they continued to live. However, Burmese Gorkhas continued their work on social upliftment and promoting of cultural identity whereever they went, I am a witness to some of it. KK

i was in burma in january and i came across a hindu mandir in a town in shan state, called nyaung shwe. it's the nearest town to inle lake. anyway, some old indian guy at the mandir told me about a nepali community living about 20 minutes away and that every morning they come on their bicycles to sell dudh. so, the next day i went back and met two nepalis! they invited me back to their village- a separate little community in which they had built a shiva mandir and had a nepali laguage school. they were as warm, hospitable, and giving as nepalis in nepal, inviting me into their home, offering chiya and immediately preparing some nasta, and giving me a tour of their village. most of them had never been to nepal, their families had simply stayed in burma after their grandparents (former gurkhas) retired there. it was kind of surreal to be in that environment there in burma and, while they were still holding strong to their nepali culture and language and instilling it in their children, the impact that living in burma and in a very small community of nepalis had on them was quite apparent. but their generous nature made me realize that nepali jahaa bhae pani, nepali hunchha! oh, and there is a FANTASTIC nepali restaurant called mount everest in mandalay!

Yeah Swaati, do send me the link at testosteronesali@yahoo.com.tw. Sense your story precedes mine, mine mom is from Burma too, and yes we grew up in Shillong. Where in Shillong are you from? Swaati, what it matters who the writer was or is, if the content is interesting to read?

I hate when someone writes in Roman Nepali. It is so hard to read. Can someone provide either Nepali Language suport or avoid writing in Roman Nepali. It takes ages to read two lines...Forget about whole Ramayan here.... Saroj

thx for letting me know. I am surprised of it cuz i thought it is not affected as western palpa but i am wrong. I have my relatives working in that area for a long time for Save the children Norway project. According to them its outsiders who are infiltratin there than locals of mityal. May be they are from Tanauh district home gaun of Mr. Suresh Aale magar, which is near from Mityal. Its just so dilemma for me and my extended family we have maoist leaders, police officials and military officials on both sides. u understand what i am talking about?

Ah, Laitmukrah you said, Swaati? Just around the bend from St. Mary?s college whose delicious kongs have been known to consent to taking romantic walks to Golf Links on a moonlit night? Woohoo! And how about ..er.. um.. hanging out in Badabazaar on Sunday afternoons. Picnics at Barapani, boating in Wards Lake, Jhalupaada booze etc. Many fond memories of Shillong, the Khasi and Garo hills and the region thereabouts. As an aside, with no intention of detracting from what you posted Swaati, I met (now deceased) some of the people who lived in Burma during the early part of the last century, and yet others who fought in that theatre of operations in WWI. As a child, I was often mesmerized by their stories of valour. And of daunting journeys through nearly impenetrable forests chock full of plants, animals and other wildlife that could be fatal for the unwary or plain unlucky. It was the 1930s, and there was one vast forest stretching eastwards from Dehradun along the Himalayan foothills all the way into Burma and further into northern Thailand and beyond. The story is of a group of travelers heading westwards in the Brahmaputra river valley on their way to Shillong. One fine day, they chanced upon some water buffalo. For those that don?t know it, this is a dangerous animal that is acknowledged to be both fearless and ill tempered. A nasty combination in an animal that easily weighs upwards of a 1000 lbs and possesses razor sharp horns known to measure, from tip to tip, upwards of 5 feet. In Africa, lions give it a wide berth, and in Asia, even mighty tigers keep a wary distance from it. Now it so happened that one bright spark among the travelers, possessed of a breech-loading gun, decided to take a crack at felling the mighty bovine. The upshot of it all was that the bull buffalo was merely injured, and with a mighty bellow charged at its tormentors. The lot scattered pell-mell and frantically scrambled up nearby trees to safety. Enraged, the animal rammed the trees and repeatedly gored their hiding place with great gusto. (The narrator said the gouges in the trees were at least 4-5 inches deep!) The terrified travelers clung to their leafy refuge and swore at the idiocy of the now ashen faced hunter-turned hunted. The wild buffalo, or arna we know it, never left those trees all day and night. Finally, overcome with thirst and hunger, the beast left. That fortunate lot shimmied down the trunks and beat a hasty retreat, and lived to tell the tale! Such were the times and lives in the days of yore. For one, I am grateful to be able to read the incredible narration posted by Swaati. Do carry on! Swaati, enchante ! Kalekrishna, cheers!
