Kale dai, I went through the exact same situation. The thing that i find most plausible about Nepalese is that they never believe they can get the job themselves (they feel the only way to find job in IT is through consultancy). After working as a consultant for about 3 years and being never together with my then-gf and now wife. we stayed in 2 different states for about 6 years. My wife was in H1b visa and working in hospital. I felt it will be worth it to stay with my wife and work as a customer service Rep with $15 pay than be an IT consultant and living away from her. i finally decided quit IT job that paid me more $35 per hr (i have bachelor in MIS and MBA degree) and became uber driver and work as customer service in insurance company for $15. Meanwhile i was also applying IT job as well by myself in the same area where my wife lived. I got a job that pays about $30/hour in few months . I bought a house about a year and half ago and live with my wife.

Kale dai, Im exactly in similar situation. IT ma lageko 1 and half year jati bhayo..1st project jaso taso support ko bharma 3 months base ani 6 month gap pachi arko project ma aako chu yaha aako ni 3 month jati bhayo( support ko bharma basirako chu). I don’t know merai kamjori ho ki k ho..may be im not working hard enough or mero brain capacity thorai bhayeko le ho.. I don’t think I can be a good software developer. Finished my bachelors in 7 years but kaam chai $15-$16 dollar bhanda mathiko payena tesaile IT tira lageko.. My wife work as as BA (genuinely pako kaam usle) for this huge company. She has to travel a lot with her colleagues and managers. Its not like I don't trust her but tei pani daar lagcha( tyo euta movie ko seen samjhinchu jahile: where this married woman goes out on business trip, at first she says no but her colleague insist so much eventually it happens ).She is way better looking than I am and also successful. I don't know how she chose me outta nowhere. I told her I will take $15-$16 job in my own field so we can stay together but she encourage me to work hard for few years until I become a good. I take it positively but I really dont think I can be a developer.
I think our relationship is going good and we dont have any arguments but sometimes I feel like I shoud let her go and do whatever I am comfortable with. I know for sure if anything happens to our relationship..it will be because of me.

The root cause is that few freaking dhotis Nepalese diging gold with fake shi* consultancy , and we all went la la with them , which destroyed work culture in IT industry and now it started to take tool on peoples life. It’s same as foreign labor industry screwing nepali society as a whole.
Technology changes so fast that people who are really into it, are struggling to keep up with it when they older. Younger work force keep replacing older one, I don’t think all the project hopper with fake resume and no educational background will be able to keep up after they cross 40. Better start working on something they can Hong on for long time.

mero_desh: You salary without Tax, medicare, social security Rate x hours per week x weeks per year = 65 x 40 x 52 = $135,200 per year With Tax = $ 135,200 - 15 % (approx) = $114,920 ( Still you don't have health insurance)

Sorry to hear that you are having difficult time. Like everyone else suggested, it is easy to tell you to live together with your wife. But it cannot happen in a snap. Looks like people like you and yor wife are making four times higher ($60 or more) at Desi's IT job compared to another $15 option. Once your income increases, it is very difficult to go back to previous income level. And impossible to survive when your income becomes four times lower (15 vs 60). I am not IT person and make way too little. A QA I know makes $68, another system engineer makes $75 and several others around me make about the same or probably even more. Few of their spouses are in different cities, but they all look much happier with great expensive European cars, impressive vacations, lavish lifestyle with regular visits to casinos and upscale bars as well as excellent investment portfolios. Some even talk about millions. Most are living with their spouses, but those who are not also seem to be doing fine with frequent visits. Sorry, I cannot feel the intensity of your pain, but if you can handle it and your wife is also on the same page, it might just be a step towards your happy future.Best wishes!

Its possible folks. I started my career in 2014 after my MS. Have been making $85/hr since 1 year. Just got interviewed for $95/hr today and I think it went pretty well. Its all about dedication for 2-3 years and the right technology you choose. Have been working as Sr Java/Cloud Engineer and I am not in SFO areas. Sharing this info to folks who loosing hope. When I started my career through consultancy, It was Sr position as you know how consultancy works. Used to work 15+ hrs/day though I am from CS background and had 3+ experience years from Nepal. These days, recruiters contact me seeing my profile in LinkedIn. Dont think much and just dedicate some more time to your work, have patience. But, If you do not have any interest then go with what you would prefer to do. But, I can understand you visa status concern.

Sajha Keto, Compared to yours, I am much behind. I do have 16 years of experience in software development. I work with full benefits (medical for family, vacations, holidays, life insurance etc) and good immediate vested 401K matching. My current salary is $150K. Still I am behind you. Your progress is very good.

@Micky brother I know if I join FT I would get benefits but not range could go down . I have so many friends who have been working at around ~110-120K. Dedication, patience, and luck are the 3 things which drove me up to this. Started my career in OPT then H1B and then GC within 3+ years. Getting right employer is the key factor. But, I already left them when I got my GC. Also, if you have multiple offers on hands then it will make you so comfortable to bargain the rate/salary. Sharing my story so that people who losing hope. Just keep in mind that "Every cloud has a silver lining"

IT is ever changing industry...If you have 15 years of experience and you don't upgrade your skills you're like an old car...which will take you from A to B but with some issues...unreliable etc...But if you're an IT professional who keeps upgrading your skills...then you're a fine tuned vehicle with turbo engine perhaps...may get well paid over the years for what you do...Unless you beat your competition year after year (fellow employees), you are a big liability to your company you work for.....and also a baloon about to explode (in your own mind)....coz you need that pay check for mortgage and all that stuff...you better try as hard as you can and stay at your work and hope for retirement someday with all the benefits that you believe you'll get. I may be little off but this is somewhat IT industry seemed to me few years ago...now my dream is to go open a small grocery store near a fortune 500 company and sell rice and Daal to all the IT professionals who may buy from my small store.....in my case, I'd be selling the same thing again and again for years and year...and most likely at higher prices every few years.
