Hopefully he knows what he is doing.
In context of Nepal sometimes I feel so unsure about whether I am too naive to think that things that needs to be done are so obvious or that everyone else is so naive to not know what needs to be done that someone working in World Bank and with Harvard degree needs to come and prove his worth in terms of letting everyone know what needs to be done. It sounds almost like out Griha Mantri giving a speech to let people know that corruption is a big problem in Nepal, as if no one knew about it.
As far as I feel it's the lack of accountability, lawless situation, environment where only the evil can flourish and people's tolerance for misdeeds of people at policy making level are roots of all the problems. Does anyone feel differently about it?
It is useless to compare someone making $200K a year in US and Rs 5lakhs in Nepal (I am sure it is only his pure salary, and I am sure he does consulting on side as other sources of income) because in US one earns in $$$ and spends in $$$, and in Nepal it is Rs to Rs.
Also quitting a job in World Bank to join Planning Comission in Nepal is not a bad deal since it just diversifies one's career portfolio and opens up doors for other opportunities, not being short sighted. It is like taking a bitter pill to be strong. I see that he is a pretty far sighted person and I do not see his moves as downgrade in his career in any way, as the interviewer is trying to portray purely comparing the salary levels. I think the interviewer is just showing how naive he himself is by acting like kuwa ko bhyaguto.
Good thing is that he is in the policy making field and not some high tech field, which has not use in Nepal.
Anyways I guess the bottomline is that hopefully his work results in real change in Nepal even though at a very minute scale and not only in development papers and report.

I think it is sensible to compare salary on this show, at least to me, as I am seeing salary as a driving force or lets say initiator factor.

Everything is impressive, but his command of Nepali language- amazing. I wish I had that diction and command of my mother-tongue. We need more of Swarnims in Nepal. Thanks for your work and dedication.

This was the third occasion in 2014 that I was blown away by a Nepali's interview. Paras Khadka was mighty impressive after Nepal's heroic achievements, Priyanka Karki seemingly took professionalism (among Nepali celebrities) to a different level by flaunting her ideas and skills during her interview and this was perfect icing on the cake. Only a complete lunatic would pack his bags and move back without properly thinking over making a concrete decision of this sort. Dr. Wagle certainly wasn't one and he knew what he'd set himself up for. He's well qualified, experienced, and certainly had decent savings off his earnings before he took a bold and ambitious decision. In the long run, he'll definitely achieve more. What truly amazed me was his mantra of being content with what he already has (as far as superficial goods is concerned). Slowly but surely, "new Nepal" seems to be taking shape. I mean, a thuggish leech like Ganesh Thapa got ousted. It's not evident when you compare two contrasting worlds - Nepal and US/any other first world country, but people seem to be yearning for a change/revolution (as proven by eagerness and turnout in recently concluded elections).

Should've seen this coming. I'm not affiliated to any political organizations. I didn't intentionally omit Khum Bahadur Khadka and other "prominent" leaders from NC. I just threw a few names right off the top of my head.

Not too much for someone who went to Royal Budanilkantha school, Earned degrees from renowned colleges from three different continents, and worked for world bank and such. I dont want to discredit what Mr Wagle has achieved but at the same time i dont think this is a general inspiration for other migrants who have earned their CS, MIS, and CIS degree by changing variables on the homework assignment. Your destiny is right here in US as an IT Coolie. Dont overthink and assume that one day you too are going to get to Mr. Wagle's position. But i did like his humbleness during the interview. Said few times he was born in the cliff of Gorkha and did not need more material and money what he already had to achieve higher level of happiness. Bravo !!

Gwach bro made the points: "It is useless to compare someone making $200K a year in US and Rs 5lakhs in Nepal (I am sure it is only his pure salary, and I am sure he does consulting on side as other sources of income) because in US one earns in $$$ and spends in $$$, and in Nepal it is Rs to Rs. It will force you to make cheap movie like the interview. Obama is definitely involved in the movie making as without his permission they cannot even start shooting for this movie.

MNO तोरीले खुब बकम्फुसरे कुरा गर्यो! बकम नै बकम धेरै हो कि के हो ह्याँ? Did you ever watch "Harold and Kumar 2"? Are you telling us that filmmakers took prior authorization from George W. Bush before shooting the movie? Have you been living under the rock or what? The greatest aspect of US as a nation is freedom of speech and democracy. You can mock anybody without fearing anybody prosecuting you.
And both your posts reminded me of classic quote (a big favorite of mine) :-
"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." - Eleanor Roosevelt
How he got the position is irrelevant. What he's set himself to do is more important.

Great Interview. If all western educated people moved back home; Nepal will be a lot better country in 10 years. It's not all that gloom and doom in Nepal as actually we think while living aboard. Things are getting better day by day; only the pace is slow. I still think Icanfly.
